Tuna Salad

Tuna salad is a light and fresh comfort food classic. Made with a few simple ingredients such as canned tuna, mayonnaise, onion and celery, it’s the perfect combination of creamy and crispy. Serve this in a sandwich, wrap it in lettuce, or stuff it in avocado halves for a healthy, throw-together lunch.

You really can’t beat a classic tuna salad. As a kid, this recipe was often packed by my mom for school lunches. And as an adult, I often eat it wrapped in lettuce, sandwiched between gluten-free bread or served alongside my flaxseed crackers. I also love tuna stuffed avocados for a tasty, low carb lunch – it’s the best.

It’s incredibly easy to make with canned tuna and a few pantry staples – hooray for simple recipes! So if you’re ever stuck in a lunch rut, having this basic recipe up your sleeve will definitely come in handy.

Tuna Salad Ingredients

All you need for this recipe are a few essential ingredients.

  • Canned Tuna: I prefer wild tuna in cans with water, but any variety works.
  • Mayonnaise: This is your creamy binder. You can use store-bought or make mayonnaise at home – it’s easy!
  • Celery: For that fresh crunch with every bite.
  • Red Onion: Finely diced red onion always provides the perfect savory balance.
  • Parsley: A few tablespoons of fresh herbs really make this tuna salad recipe the best.
  • Dijon Mustard: 1/2 tablespoon
  • Salt and Pepper: to taste

How To Make Tuna Salad

To get started, you’ll need to drain your tuna. After cutting the lid with a can opener, press the lid against the tuna and tilt the can to drain all the liquid out over a sink. Remove the lid and place the tuna in a medium sized bowl.

Then, add the mayonnaise, celery, red onion, parsley, and dijon mustard to the bowl. Use a fork to mix everything together, while breaking up any large pieces of tuna. Season with salt and pepper to taste – and that’s it!

Tuna Salad Variations

Not a fan of mayonnaise or want a bolder flavor? Here’s a few suggestions to add some depth to this recipe.

  • Replace mayonnaise with regular or greek yogurt for a lighter, creamier option.
  • Use mashed up avocado if you want to exclude the mayonnaise.
  • Add broccoli rice and turn it into a broccoli tuna salad.
  • Add dried fruits such as raisins, or freshly diced apples.
  • Make it extra crunchy by tossing in diced up cucumbers or shredded cabbage.
  • Spice it up with some curry powder, other spice mixes, or chopped herbs.
  • Squeeze lemon juice as you’re mixing for a brighter flavor.

What Goes With Tuna Salad?

While this recipe is great on its own, there’s so many creative ways to serve it.

  • Sandwich: Make it into a sandwich along with a layer of lettuce and tomatoes.
  • Wrap: Turn it into a wrap with my cassava flour tortillas.
  • Lettuce Wrap: Use butter lettuce leaves for a lighter, low-carb option.
  • Stuffed Avocado or Tomato: Stuff it into avocado or tomato halves.
  • Dip: Serve it with crackers or chips.

How Long Does Tuna Salad Last?

Tuna salad tastes the best when it’s eaten fresh, but it can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days. Because this has fish and mayonnaise in it, don’t leave it sitting on the countertop for too long in room temperature.

If you want to freeze this, the answer is yes! Just place the salad in a freezer safe container and store for up to 2 months. Just note that after you’ve thawed it in the fridge, drain out the excess liquid once more. Then, give it a good mix before eating.

Happy Monday! How was your weekend? On Saturday I hit up one of my favorite studios for a endurance cycling class, followed by a girl’s brunch at Beatrix and a day full of shopping. Hmmm what else? Tony and I went to the Honne concert and had a blast jammin’ out to one of our favorite bands. If you haven’t listened to them, I highly recommend.

Now it’s Monday and I still haven’t gone grocery shopping. The upside is that I almost always have a can of Genova Seafood’s tuna in my cupboard and usually end up making quick pasta (we love this mac and cheese) or a giant tuna melt with tomatoes and avocado.

Apple Almond Tuna Salad

Revive the tuna of your youth with this Tuna Salad Recipe with apples. Bursting with flavor from fresh grapes, apple, red onion, and almond, even the pickiest eater won’t mind the canned tuna mixed in. Serve over large lettuce cups, crackers, or your favorite bread slices.

Yields: 2 servings

Ingredients:

5 oz. canned tuna or chicken

½ medium crisp apple, chopped

½ c. halved grapes

1 large pickle, chopped

¼ medium red onion, finely chopped

¼ c. sliced almonds

1 tbsp. whole grain mustard

1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

¼ tsp. black pepper

For serving: butter lettuce, romaine, crackers, or bread

Directions:

Drain the canned tuna. Combine the tuna, apple, grapes, pickles, red onion, almonds, mayonnaise, mustard, lemon juice, sea salt, and black pepper in a large bowl. Stir well with a fork to break up the tuna.

Serve at room temperature and store extras in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Sweet apples and fragrant basil add flavor, crunch and texture to this delicious and easy tuna salad recipe.

Tuna salad is a staple in my house during lunch time and for good reason! It’s high protein, low carb and I always have a can or two on hand at the ready. My boys love it in a sandwich with crusty bread and I love eating it on salad greens or with rice crackers for a lighter option.

For a fun twist on the classic, I love throwing in diced apples to my tuna salad this time of year. Not only do apples add a subtle sweet flavor and lots of crunch, but it’s a great way to add a serving of fruit into your day.

Curried Tuna Salad with Apples

Curried Tuna Salad with Apples makes a quick protein-packed lunch! You can also serve it with sliced vegetables and crackers for a healthy snack.

I’ve got a protein-packed meal or snack idea for you! This Curried Tuna Salad with apples is perfect for a quick lunch or afternoon snack. Minus the apples, this is the same tuna salad my mom made for me growing up. She sometimes used canned chicken instead of tuna and I’ve even made it with canned salmon! I add the apples for a touch of sweetness but feel free to leave them out.

This easy tuna salad comes in especially handy as a busy mom because it can be made ahead of time and lasts several days in the fridge. When my kids were babies it seemed like I always needed to eat something at lightning speed in between naps, work etc so it was nice to have this on hand.

Here’s what you need:

  • Tuna- I use two cans per batch but you could easily double it to make more. Chunk light in water is my go-to.
  • Apples – I chop mine up pretty small but if you prefer a little sweetness with less chunks you could also grate the apple with a cheese grater and mix it in.
  • Hummus – I prefer hummus to mayo to make my tuna salad creamy but you could use mayo if you prefer. Sometimes I do a combination of hummus and mashed avocado.
  • Green onions – Their mild flavor is perfect for this tuna salad. They add flavor without being overly strong.
  • Optional veggies- Feel free to add extra veggies. I often throw in some diced bell pepper for crunch.
  • Curry powder – The star of the show!
  • Dried mustard – Another way to add subtle flavor.

Curried Tuna Salad with Apples

Curry powder is one of my favorite spices and I especially love it in tuna and chicken salad. If you love it as well, you might like my curried sweet potato soup. Serve this tuna salad with your favorite crackers, or slices of cucumber or bell pepper for scooping!
