How to Turn Off All the Touch Sounds in Android

If you don’t like the little sounds that your smartphone makes, here’s how to turn them off. This problem affects Android more, but iOS users can disable some sounds too.

Out of the box, your phone probably makes annoying sounds for everything you do. These might drive you crazy simply because you get sick of the noise, or maybe because it disturbs those around you. Thankfully, you can disable the dumb sounds your phone makes so it only makes noise when needed.

How to Disable Touch Sounds in Android

  1. Open Settings and scroll down to Sound.
  2. You’ll see several volume options; select Advanced to see the rest.
  3. Then, scroll down to view the Other sounds and vibrations options.
  4. We recommend leaving Charging sounds on since that helps you confirm you’ve connected your charger properly, but the rest you can disable safely.

Touch sounds, are the clicking noises you hear every time you tap something on the screen. You also might want to turn off Vibrate on tap to save some battery, Screen locking sounds since they’re pointless, and Dial pad tones so your phone doesn’t sound like it’s from 40 years ago when you call someone.

On iOS, there aren’t any comparable touch sounds. But you can disable the keyboard clicking sounds and the lock screen sounds if they annoy you. Just head to Settings > Sounds (Sounds & Haptics for iPhone 7 and newer) and scroll down. Here, you can disable Lock Sounds and Keyboard Clicks.

You might like these sounds, and that’s fine! But some people like to keep their phones as quiet as possible, and these repetitive noises get on your nerves after a while. For more volume fun, check out how to override silent mode with a text message.

Do you like the touch sounds or do they annoy you? Which of these options have you left on and turned off? Tell us down in the comments!

Turn off specific sounds on Android

Ultimate Sound Control is a free application for Android that gives you better control over system sounds on devices running Android.

All Android versions come with some form of sound management. You may change the global volume for instance, select individual volume settings for ring, alarm and media, or change sounds for specific events.

Depending on the manufacturer of the device, you may get even more controls, for instance to turn off the sound the camera makes when you use it.

But, not all manufacturers add these to their devices, and even those that do, don’t provide you with all sound settings Android supports.

Block specific sounds on Android

Ultimate Sound Control requires root, just to get this out of the way. It won’t work at all if you have not rooted your device.

Good news is that it requires no special permissions, and that it is compatible with the majority of Android devices. Bad news, that it has not been updated since 2013.

While that suggests the application has been abandoned by its author, it worked just fine on an Android 5.1.1 device.

When you run the application after giving it root permissions, two main areas are displayed to you.

The top lists volume control sliders which provide you with the means to set volumes for media, ring & notification, call, alarm and system individually.

More interesting than those are the individual sounds displayed beneath those sliders. They enable you to turn off specific sounds on the device without affecting the volumes you set previously.

If you don’t want a sound when you take a photo or video, when you unlock the phone, or send a message, then you may do so there.

While you may switch the device to silent mode for pretty much the same effect, it may not work for all sounds.

Plus, if you want sounds with the exception of a few, you may only do so using an app like Ultimate Sound Control for Android.

The changes take effect after a reboot of the device, and the app informs you about that so that you know that this is the case.

Below is a video that reviews the application’s functionality as well.

Closing Words

Ultimate Sound Control is an easy to use application that requires no extra permissions. Its main purpose is to turn off certain sounds on Android devices without switching the device to silent mode.

The feature is especially useful on devices that offer little sound control options, but may be useful on others as well thanks to its impressive list of supported sounds.

A Pro version was available at one point in time, but it seems to have been pulled. It allowed you to change the sound file of the events and actions supported by the app.

How to find and set ringtones through the Zedge app

There’s a lot of places to find ringtones, but far and away, the easiest is Zedge. Zedge is a customization app that looks to personalize your phone in a number of ways, but most notably with its Ringtone and Wallpaper galleries. Zedge even streamlines the process, letting you download and set your ringtone from the same screen! I will admit the ads on Zedge have gotten a bit much over the years, but if you like to change your ringtone every few weeks, you can shell out for the ad-free upgrade.

Browsing the app is a simple affair; you can browse by category or search for something specific. Once you find a ringtone in the app you like, here’s how to set it:

  1. Tap the Set in the middle of the ringtone’s details screen.
  2. Tap Set Ringtone.

Tap Allow to allow Zedge to download the ringtone to your phone’s storage.

Tap the back button to return to Zedge.

You’ll see a toast notification at the bottom of the screen telling you the ringtone has been applied. If you wish to set a ringtone to a specific contact or as your notification tone, you can select those options from the same Set menu.

How to manually add a ringtone file to the Ringtones folder

If you already have a cool, custom ringtone you just need to add to your phone, then you’ll need a file manager app to get it into the Ringtones folder. Now, some phones have good file managers on them out of the box, but if not, you’ll need to download one from the Google Play Store; for our steps, we’re using Solid Explorer.

  1. Long-press your custom ringtone in the Downloads folder (or whichever local folder you downloaded it to). After long-pressing the first ringtone, you can tap more ringtones if you wish to copy multiple sounds at once.
  2. Tap the Copy icon ( two documents stacked on top of each other).
  3. Swipe in from the left edge of the screen to open the location menu. (If you’re using Android 10 gestures, turn your phone horizontal to get two tabs, the left window will be your source folder, and the right folder you can navigate to the Ringtones folder.)

Tap Internal Memory.

Tap Paste.

On some phones, the Settings app will see the new ringtones immediately, but if yours doesn’t, reboot the phone. Upon reboot, the new ringtones should appear in the list of available ringtones in the Sounds menu.

How to set a custom ringtone in Settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap the Sounds section. If you don’t see a section with Sound in the title, type «Ringtone» into the search bar at the top of your Settings app.

Tap Phone ringtone.

Tap Save or OK. If you do not see these options on your device, simply tap the back button to exit the ringtone picker.

If your custom ringtone has been properly set, you will see its name underneath the Phone ringtone.

How to apply a custom ringtone to a contact

By giving each of your most-used contacts a unique ringtone, you can tell who is calling without having to scramble across the room and grab your phone off the charger. This is useful at all times, but especially during work hours, when answering personal calls can earn you a reprimand, but missing a client call could slow down your progress.

  1. Open Contacts.
  2. Tap the contact you wish to set a custom ringtone for.

Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner.

How to set a custom notification sound in Settings

You didn’t settle for a default ringtone, so why would you settle for a default notification tone? If you already have a text tone you like — I have about ten I’ll cycle through myself — you can add them to the Notifications folder just as we added our custom ringtones to the Ringtones folder. From there, the process should seem familiar by now.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound. This menu may be named differently depending on your phone, with possible names being Sound and Display, Personalization, etc.
