UTM is a full featured system emulator and virtual machine host for iOS and macOS. It is based off of QEMU. In short, it allows you to run Windows, Linux, and more on your Mac, iPhone, and iPad. More information at https://getutm.app/ and https://mac.getutm.app/

UTM/QEMU requires dynamic code generation (JIT) for maximum performance. JIT on iOS devices require either a jailbroken device, or one of the various workarounds found for specific versions of iOS (see «Install» for more details).

UTM SE («slow edition») uses a threaded interpreter which performs better than a traditional interpreter but still slower than JIT. This technique is similar to what iSH does for dynamic execution. As a result, UTM SE does not require jailbreaking or any JIT workarounds and can be sideloaded as a regular app.

To optimize for size and build times, only the following architectures are included in UTM SE: ARM, PPC, RISC-V, and x86 (all with both 32-bit and 64-bit variants).

Watch out for scammers

I got a call from Apple, saying that someone was trying to buy stuff from my bank account. Freaking out, they told me to download this app. I noticed it had a 2 star review. I started to wonder, “wait, y is APPLE calling about suspicious activity. Isn’t my bank supposed to call about suspicious activity? Also, I’ve never had to download an app before, when Apple helped me”. I decided to read the reviews. (Just in case it was legit, I told the woman that it was taking a long time to download, so I could buy time to investigate). I seen a bunch of people saying that this was an app scammers used. I then said to the woman, “Sorry ma’am, but I seen that the reviews were talking about scammers using this app. How do I know ur really apple?” She immediately hung up. I called apple, & my bank, to make sure all my stuff was secure. My bank said everything was ok, & big surprise, Apple said that they had no records saying they called me. About a year ago Apple called me & I asked if they were legit. The person talking to me was super nice, & gave me lots of proof. If u get a call, don’t hesitate to ask, “how do I know this isn’t a scam”. & if things aren’t adding up, hang up, & call the company (to see if they really called u).

Don’t Be Confused

I know it most likely won’t do much, but as a technician that has used TeamViewer as a service for years, I’m leaving this review in hopes that some people will realize this app is legit. Yes, there are malicious individuals that will abuse the features of this app to scam, but this app is designed for people to get assistant with various functions of their device. It is not the banks fault that you handed a random person the key to your home, so please don’t hate the company or the developers all because a malicious third party that is completely unrelated to them tried to scam you. Their product is solid, and does what it says. Like I’ve said, I’ve used TeamViewer for years and never have had an issue. Just don’t give personal information to absolute strangers that you haven’t verified and you’ll be fine. Also, when you search “Apple Support Number” and tap on a number that belongs to apple, in the small box that pops up asking if you want to call them, it will even say “Apple Verified” on iPhones running iOS 13 or later, so I don’t know why people keep saying “I called the first number I saw and got scammed”. Anyways, stay safe, and ALWAYS: 1. Verify 2. Verify 3. And most importantly, Verify.

PayPal Scam

This app was used in a PayPal scam. When I tried to call about an erroneous charge in December from The Best Franchise Store the customer service people had me log into this app to take over my phone and have full view as I logged into my PayPal account. When I started asking questions they got hostile. At this point I knew it was a scam but I kept going to see how they were going to “help” me. They wanted me to open up an app to pay in Bitcoin? I laughed and said I didn’t think so and they hung up on me.
I was scammed out of $229. dollars from The Best Franchise Store that posed as Dyson. Please do not listen to ANY Customer Service agent that asks you to log into this app. It is a Scam.
DEVELOPERS — You clearly see a trend here! 95% of these reviews are telling you that they got scammed using Your App including me. CAN YOU ADDRESS THIS AND OFFER ANY KIND OF SECURITY OR HELP TO INNOCENT CUSTOMERS? All you do is praise the reviews of people saying your app works great. It’s probably coming from the Indian Scammers that you support! This is ridiculous! Please reply and offer any solution and security. Rise up and be accountable.

## Notes
**Note that some changes require updates to your VM configuration so please read this part carefully.**

* Cursor disappearing on Windows 10/11 has been fixed with an updated VirtIO GPU driver. Additionally, dynamic resolution (auto-change resolution when VM window is resized) and more fixed resolutions (matching all the screen resolutions of the latest Mac computers) were added to the driver. This requires you to download the latest SPICE tools ISO from https://mac.getutm.app/support/ and run the installer again (or manually updating your GPU driver from the ISO if you know how).
* In v2.4.0, newly created Q35 and PC machine (x86 and x86_64) defaulted to the `Skylake-Client` CPU model. Subsequently, it was discovered that the change caused performance regressions. v2.4.1 reverted the default CPU model to `Default` but if you created a new Q35/PC VM in v2.4.0, it is recommended that you manually change the CPU in System settings to `Default`.
* Since v1.0.0, UTM used the RTL8139 network card as the default for Q35 VMs (x86 and x86_64) and Virt VMs (ARM64). There is a bug in the device implementation that causes the Windows driver to freeze the system and many users reported Windows Installer freezing as well as random freezes through normal use. In v2.4.0, we changed the default network card for Virt machines to `virtio-net-pci` and in v2.4.1, we changed the default network card for Q35 machines to E1000. However, this change only applies to newly created VMs, and any existing VMs may still suffer from the random freeze issues. It is recommended that you change your network card to `e1000` for Q35 machines and `virtio-net-pci` for Virt machines. Windows 7 and above should have the Intel E1000 network card drivers already installed, but the VirtIO Network card requires drivers in the SPICE tools ISO from https://mac.getutm.app/support/ (if you previously installed this, you should have the drivers already on your system).
* Since v2.1.2, UTM provided an option (Cmd+,) to «Use only performance cores by default» which defaulted to off. When on, any VM which does not have a manually configured CPU count (> 0) will set the CPU count to the number of performance cores on the system. In v2.4.1, we have made this option on by default which means if you previously have not modified this option, then it will now be on. If you turned the option on, it should not change and if you turned the option on and later off again, it should still be off. The reason for this change was because users may not be aware of this option which can result in degraded performance when left off and we believe the default should reflect the best possible performance. Note that as before, if you manually set a VM’s CPU count > 0, then this option does not change anything.
