Apple bottom jeans are a type of denim pants made for women with curves and big derrieres. These jeans are designed to accentuate the natural curves of women. Natural women curves associated with the shape of an apple have been trademarked into ‘Apple Bottoms’ by rapper Nelly back in 2003.
The term ‘apple bottom’ has surfaced from urban hip hop. It has been in use for a few years before it got trademarked. Jeans with an apple bottom are denim pants for women with large posteriors. When you hear ‘apple bottoms’ you need to think about large posteriors that look like apples.

Apple Bottoms jeans are a line of women’s jeans launched by hip hop artist Nelly and noted by their trademark apple-shaped back pockets. Though Apple Bottoms jeans were the only product available when the clothing line began in 2003, Apple Bottoms now carries other apparel, handbags, footwear, outerwear, sunglasses, accessories, jewelry, lingerie, swimwear, and girls’ clothing. One of the newest products they offer is shoes for babies, or «crib shoes.»
Nelly created Apple Bottoms jeans as a fashion line intended to accentuate and celebrate women’s natural curves, since «apple bottom» is a slang term for a shapely woman’s rear end. The jeans are designed to flatter women of all shapes and sizes. The growing popularity of Apple Bottoms jeans is reflected in their mention in a number of hip hop songs, including «Low» by Flo Rida featuring T Pain and «Shake That» by Eminem featuring Nate Dogg.
Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks have also helped promote Apple Bottoms fashions on their respective shows, The Oprah Winfrey Show and America’s Next Top Model. The jeans appeared on the segment Oprah’s Favorite Things and were also featured in Winfrey’s magazine. All the contestants on season 10 of America’s Next Top Model received Apple Bottoms jeans and handbags.
In addition to the apple-shaped pockets, Apple Bottoms jeans are known for their careful detailing. Zippers and other hardware on items throughout the Apple Bottoms line carry the brand logo. The pockets are lined with patterned fabric that changes every season. Rhinestones and decorative stitching decorate many Apple Bottoms fashions.
Apple Bottoms jeans not only help women of all body types feel beautiful; the company also contributes to the fight against childhood illness. Nelly has used Apple Bottoms jeans to raise money for his charities, Jes Us 4 Jackie and 4 Sho 4 Kids. Jes Us 4 Jackie is named after Nelly’s sister and helps raise awareness about leukemia and bone marrow donation in the African-American community, while 4 Sho 4 Kids seeks to improve the lives of children born with developmental disorders.

@ysmina— That’s a good point. I never thought of it that way. I first heard about these jeans on Oprah’s show and I have high regard for Oprah. I trust her judgment, so I went out and bought my first pair after she recommended it. I like these jeans a lot but I also agree with you that the jeans could have been branded differently. ysmina January 16, 2015
It’s great that apple bottom jeans is filling a void in the clothing industry. I have no problem with that. But I do dislike the brand name and the apple shapes sewn on the back pockets of this brand’s jeans. I think that this is just one more thing that contributes the objectification of women in this country. It is putting women’s physical appearance at the forefront and encouraging women to be seen just as a sex symbol. If the brand name didn’t have the sexual connotations that it has, this wouldn’t even be an issue.
This is probably also why «apple bottoms jeans» are being featured in songs that objectify women and are full with sexual innuendos. It also certainly doesn’t help that Nelly promotes his brand and jeans with pictures of him biting into apples.
Yes, we do need clothing lines that suit women and women like wearing. But we also need women to be respected more and referring to a woman’s body part as «apples» and naming a brand after it doesn’t really do that. fBoyle January 16, 2015
Finally, a brand that actually cares about and caters to women with large natural curves.
For years, women with curves have had to visit store after store to find the right pair of jeans that actually fit them. It seems like this particular brand not only makes the right cut and style of jeans for these women but also gives them self esteem and confidence.
I believe that every woman is beautiful but we also need the right clothing to accentuate our beauty. No one should be ashamed of their size or shape. It’s important to be healthy but the definition of beauty is very subjective and shouldn’t depend on a woman’s shape or the number on their jeans. More power to such brands for making a change in the clothing industry and in people’s perceptions about size and beauty!
