Using Dual SIM with an eSIM
An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile data plan from your network provider without having to use a physical nano-SIM. With iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, you can use Dual SIM with either two active eSIMs or a nano-SIM and an eSIM. iPhone 12 models, iPhone 11 models, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, feature Dual SIM with a nano-SIM and an eSIM. 1
How can you use Dual SIM?
- Use one number for business and another number for personal calls.
- Add a local data plan when you’re travelling outside the country or region.
- Have separate voice and data plans.
With iOS 13 and later, both of your phone numbers can make and receive voice and FaceTime calls and send and receive messages using iMessage, SMS and MMS. 2 Your iPhone can use one mobile data network at a time.
If you want to use 5G with Dual SIM on iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max, make sure you have iOS 14.5 or later.
What you need
- An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or later with iOS 12.1 or later
- A wireless carrier that supports eSIM
To use two different providers, your iPhone must be unlocked. Otherwise, both plans must be from the same provider. If a CDMA network provides your first SIM, your second SIM won’t support CDMA. Contact your network provider for more information.
If you have an enterprise or corporate data service plan, check with your company administrator to see if they support this feature.

Set up your mobile data plan with eSIM
On iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, you can use two eSIMs for two or more mobile data plans – two active at the same time – or a physical nano-SIM for a mobile data plan and an eSIM for one or more other mobile data plans.
On iPhone 12 models, iPhone 11 models, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, you can use a physical nano-SIM for a mobile data plan and an eSIM for one or more other mobile data plans. If you don’t have a nano-SIM and your provider supports it, an eSIM can serve as your only mobile data plan. The eSIM provided by your network is stored digitally in your iPhone.
You can store more than one eSIM in your iPhone, but you can use only one at a time. To switch eSIMs, tap Settings, tap either Cellular or Mobile Data, and then tap the plan you want to use. Then tap Turn On This Line.
Label your plans
After your second plan has been activated, label your plans. For example, you can label one plan Business and the other plan Personal.
You’ll use these labels when you choose which phone number to use for making or receiving calls and messages, to designate a number for mobile data and to assign a number to your contacts so you know which number you will use.
If you change your mind later, you can change your labels by going to Settings, tapping either Cellular or Mobile Data, and then tapping the number whose label you want to change. Then tap Mobile Data Plan Label and select a new label or enter a custom label.
Set your default number
Choose a number to use when you call or send a message to someone who isn’t in your Contacts app. With iOS 13 and later, choose which mobile data plans you want to use for iMessage and FaceTime. With iOS 13 and later, you can choose either or both numbers.
On this screen, choose a number to be your default number, or choose which number will only be used for mobile data. Your other number will be your default. If you want your iPhone to use mobile data from both plans, depending on coverage and availability, turn on Allow Mobile Data Switching.
Use two phone numbers for calls, messages and data
Now that your iPhone has been set up with two phone numbers, here’s how to use them.
Let your iPhone remember which number to use
When you call one of your contacts, you don’t need to choose which number to use every time. By default, your iPhone will use the same number that you used the last time you called that contact. If you haven’t called that contact, your iPhone will use your default number. You can also specify which number to use for your calls with a contact. Follow these steps:
- Tap the contact.
- Tap Preferred Mobile Data Plan.
- Tap the number that you want to use for that contact.
Make and receive calls
You can make and receive phone calls with either phone number.
With iOS 13 and later, when you’re on a call, if the network provider for your other phone number supports Wi-Fi calling, you can answer incoming calls on your other number. When you’re on a call using a line that isn’t your designated line for mobile data, you need to turn on Allow Mobile Data Switching to receive calls from your other line. If you ignore the call and you have voicemail set up with your provider, you’ll get a missed-call notification, and the call will go to voicemail. Check with your network provider for Wi-Fi calling availability and find out whether additional fees for data usage apply from your data provider.
If you’re on a call and your other line shows No Service, either your provider doesn’t support Wi-Fi calling or you don’t have Wi-Fi calling turned on. 3 It could also mean Allow Mobile Data Switching is not turned on. When you’re on a call, an incoming call on your other phone number will go to voicemail if you set up voicemail with your provider. 4 However, you won’t get a missed-call notification from your secondary number. Call Waiting works for incoming calls on the same phone number. To avoid missing an important call, you can turn on call forwarding and forward all calls from one number to the other. Check with your provider for availability and to find out whether additional fees apply.

What You Need to Know About the True Cost of an iPhone
Choosing an iPhone and the Right Plan for You
Learning how much an iPhone costs isn’t as simple as checking Apple’s website for the listed price of the latest iPhone. That’s because the cost of buying an iPhone depends on several factors, and you need to account for the cost of the monthly service, which varies based on your plan. So, figuring out how much iPhone costs requires some math.
The Cost of the Latest iPhones
The first and most important factor in the cost of an iPhone is the phone itself. Prices vary based on which model you want and how much storage you prefer. In Apple’s iPhone line up, a new phone can be yours for anywhere from $49 (for a basic iPhone 8) to $1,449 (for the highest-end iPhone 11 Pro Max), depending on the model you want.
As of April 2020, the cost of a new iPhone from Apple looks like this:
Model | 64GB | 128GB | 256GB | 512GB |
---|---|---|---|---|
iPhone 11 Pro Max | $1099 | $1249 | $1449 | |
iPhone 11 Pro | $999 | $1149 | $1349 | |
iPhone 11 | $699 | $749 | $849 | |
iPhone XR | $599 | $649 | ||
iPhone SE (2nd Generation) | $399 | $449 | $549 | |
iPhone 8 Plus | $549 | $599 | ||
iPhone 8 | $449 | $499 |
These days, pretty much everyone pays the full price for their iPhone (more on why that is in the next section), so don’t expect major discounts. But you can choose to pay full price up front or to pay in monthly installments.
The major phone companies offer a monthly payment plan when you purchase a new iPhone from them. This offers a lower upfront cost, but you must stay with the carrier until the iPhone is paid for or else pay the balance due before you change to another carrier. Alternatively, if you want to buy your phone in installments, but not be stuck with a phone company, check out Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program.
The iPhone almost never goes on sale. You might find short-term discounts when new models are released, or around the holidays, but those are usually small savings. Apple doesn’t really put its products on sale, so don’t wait for one. Just buy what you want when you want it.
Carrier Subsidies Aren’t Going to Return
It used to be that iPhones cost much less—sometimes as little as $199—for the latest model because phone companies paid part of the cost of the phone to entice you to use their service. Not anymore. In recent years, the major phone companies have done away with subsidies that allow customers who sign a two-year contract to pay significantly less for their iPhones. It’s very unlikely that the subsidy system will return, so expect to pay full price for your iPhone from now on.
That said, when new iPhone models are released, major carriers including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, will sometimes offer reductions in the cost for the latest iPhone if you trade in your older model iPhone.
Regional and Prepaid Carriers Sometimes Have Cheaper Prices
You can pay a little less than the sticker price for the iPhone—about $50 in most cases—if you buy it through one of the smaller, regional carriers that offer the phone in some parts of the U.S. These carriers don’t always have the latest models, have more-limited monthly plans, and their service tends to be focused specifically on smaller, rural areas, but they are a cost-saving option for some users.
Monthly Voice and Data Plans
You should factor in the monthly cost of the voice and data service provided by the phone company you choose when thinking about the cost of an iPhone.
Monthly iPhone plans typically include costs for data service, calling, texting, and other services. Expect to spend around $100 a month with major carriers for the services that most people use.
With prepaid carriers, plans are cheaper, generally running closer to half the price offered by the major carriers, but data connections are often slower or have their fastest speeds limited based on how much you use. With those companies, expect to spend closer to the $50 to $60 range for calling, texting, and data.
Other Costs
You don’t want to spend hundreds on a new iPhone and then toss it in your purse or pants pocket without a protective case. Plan to put a case on the iPhone as soon as you get it. Many protective cases cost around $40-$100.
The iPhone comes with Apple’s standard warranty, but you may want to extend that protection with an AppleCare+ extends warranty available directly from Apple. The price of AppleCare differs based on your model — expect to spend $100-$200 — for two additional years of coverage. If you buy your iPhone through Apple’s monthly iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is included in the price.
Lots of other companies offer iPhone insurance, but we recommend against it.
