Recently, Apple announced the launch of the new iPhone 12 series of smartphones. Featuring an all-new design, 5G capability, and a new and improved camera module, Apple believes that the iPhone 12 series has what it takes to be the best in its generation.

One of the things that actually caught people’s attention during the launch, however, is their new packaging policy. Usually, when you buy an iPhone, this is what comes in the box:

1. Standard Paperwork and Manual
2. Apple Stickers
3. iPhone
4. Earpods
5. Charging Wire and Charging brick.

This year, however, Apple has decided to go eco-friendly and reduce its carbon footprint, by taking the monumental decision of removing the Power brick from the box. Yes, moving forward, iPhones will not come with a Power brick in the box.

This piece of news was heavily rumored months before the actual launch, and while the initial reaction from fans was that of ridicule, we gave it a thought ourselves and this is what we think.

1. If you are an existing iPhone user, then you probably have an iPhone or iPad power brick lying around in your house, in which case, you don’t really need another power brick at all.
2. If you use a newer Android device and have upgraded to the iPhone, you can use the power brick from the Android phone as well. Yes, we know that the iPhone still has the Thunderbolt charging port, but Apple will be bundling a Thunderbolt to USB Type C cable in the box. This way you can charge your iPhone with a Quick Charger as well.
3. If you do not have a power brick at home, but you do have a laptop that has a Type C charging port, you can just plug in your iPhone 12 to the laptop and charge it that way.
4. The iPhone 12 series also supports Qi wireless charging, and the new MagSafe technology and charger are capable of charging the iPhone 12 at full 15W. If you win a Qi Wireless charger, you are set in that respect as well.

As you can see, Apple has given this a fair amount of thought, and we believe, the conclusion was that most people buying an iPhone, already have the hardware required to charge the phone, and giving them an extra charging brick, which will probably just lay idle, is only going to do more damage to the environment.

One more accessory that has been removed from the iPhone 12 box, is the EarPods. The reasoning is the same. The iPhone 12 works with existing Earpods, Airpods, and other Bluetooth headphones/earphones as well. So, once again, adding one more pair of EarPods seems counterproductive.

With the two elements removed from the box, Apple has predicted that they will be eliminating almost 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually, which is roughly equal to 4,50,000 fewer cars on the road per year.

This has also resulted in a more compact packaging size, and as such, Apple can now fit in more inventory and cater to a much bigger demand, thereby given them a larger footprint in the market.

No Charger in the Box? Everything You Need to Know About Charging the iPhone 12 and 13

The latest Apple iPhones don’t ship with a power adapter, but they do support Apple’s wireless MagSafe charging. Whether you use a cable or not, these are the fastest ways to charge the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.

Starting with iPhone 12, Apple no longer includes power adapters in every box as it moves to reduce package waste (and make some cash on accessories). Its newest smartphones also include support for Apple’s magnetic MagSafe charging. Here’s what you need to know about charging your iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, and what you might need to purchase.

What Comes With the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13?

Every iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 comes with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, and that’s pretty much it. So out of the box, those who don’t currently have any Apple power adapters will need a USB-C power adapter to charge the iPhone 12 and 13.

Plus, the newer iPhones ship without EarPods, so you’ll need to supply your own headphones to listen to music and podcasts. Apple sells its own AirPods wireless earbuds, but there are plenty of alternatives that won’t break the bank, not to mention our picks for best wireless headphones and those made with runners in mind.

As Apple explained during its iPhone 12 event last year, excluding the power adapter reduces the size of the box. This means 70% more devices can fit on a shipping pallet, which means more iPhone 12 devices can ship to users. Smaller boxes also allow Apple to reduce yearly carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons, it says.

How Do I Charge the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13?

Apple has not fully transitioned the iPhone to USB-C—which typically provides faster charging speeds—or removed ports altogether, so the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 still include the typical Lightning charge port. This means you can use an existing Lightning cable and traditional USB-A power adapter to charge both phones. With the included USB-C-to-Lightning cable, though, you can also plug your iPhone into your Mac laptop.

Additionally, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 are compatible with current Qi wireless charging pads. However, Apple’s main focus for charging the iPhone 12 and 13 is its built-in, fast charging MagSafe magnetic power connector.

What Is MagSafe?

For years, Apple used the term MagSafe to describe its computers’ charging cable connectors. Their magnetized tips “snapped” into the magnetized MacBook charging ports—and snapped out if disturbed so as not to bring a Mac laptop crashing to the floor, for example. They disappeared a few years ago as Apple transitioned the MacBook lineup to USB-C charging and data transfer, but returned this fall in the M1 Pro/M1 Max-based MacBooks as «MagSafe 3.»

Apple brings a similar technology to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineup in the form of a magnetized “hockey puck” disc that looks like a big Apple Watch charger and snaps to the rear of the phone. This MagSafe connector includes a USB-C cord that plugs into a power source and charges at 15W.

What’s the Fastest Way to Charge the iPhone 13?

Since iPhone 5, Apple has shipped its iPhones with a 5W USB power adapter in the box, with the exception of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, which ship with an 18W USB-C power adapter. (Apple’s iPads also ship with 10W or 12W USB or 18W or 20W USB-C power adapters, depending on the model.) So unless the iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 is your first Apple device, you probably have one of them lying around.

iPhone XS: What’s In the Box?

So the iPhone XS launched earlier this month alongside the bigger iPhone XS Max, and the “affordable” iPhone XR. Well, we recently got our hands on an iPhone XS, and here’s what you’ll find (and what you’ll not find) inside the box of the new Rs 99,990 iPhone from Apple.

iPhone XS: What’s In the Box?

The iPhone XS comes in the usual iPhone-y box that has remained the same for the last, I don’t know how many years, and that’s perfectly fine. The Gold variant that we got (which looks gorgeous, by the way) comes in a standard white box with the ‘iPhone’ text and the Apple logo done in gold — that’s a nice touch. I’m not sure if the other colors come with the text and logo in their respective colors as well, but they probably do.

Anyway, opening the box is the usual Apple affair with easy to slide-out lids, a pull tab for the phone, and some in-box accessories under it. Here’s what you’ll get:

• The iPhone XS (because you paid for it)
• Lots and lots of manuals and certification cards that you won’t ever read.
• Apple stickers (whatever you do, please don’t stick these on your car? Please?)
• SIM ejector tool
• Lightning EarPods (because of the courage Apple showed two years back)
• USB Type-A to Lightning cable
• Charger (not a fast charger, so it takes forever to charge your new iPhone)
• No headphone dongle (because apparently it’s impossible to include a $9 accessory with a $999 iPhone)

A Small Rant… Probably

Note: You can skip this if you’re not interested in reading anything bad about Apple or the way it tries to earn more money from its customers.

So the iPhone XS is an absolute beauty, and I’ll not go into further detail about it here because then what will I write in the full review? Heh. Anyway, the issue I have (and so does almost everyone else on the planet other than the Cupertino staff) is with two things. First, the lack of a headphone dongle in the box. That’s just really petty from Apple, especially on a smartphone that is priced at a whopping $999 or Rs 99,990 in India. Just for the record, you wouldn’t get a dongle even if you bought the 512GB iPhone XS Max for $1,449 or Rs 1,44,990 in India, and it makes no sense.

Of course, there’s the argument that if you’re spending $999 on a smartphone, you can probably afford to spend $9 extra on a dongle, but that’s stupid. The point is, if I’m spending $999 on a smartphone that has no headphone jack, it’s almost the moral responsibility of the courageous company to put in a headphone dongle inside it, especially when the company is using a proprietary port on its phone instead of USB-C.

The other thing I’m pissed off about is the lack of a fast charger in the box. I mean, c’mon! That’s just downright insane. The battery on the iPhone X isn’t huge by any means, it’s barely even up there with Android flagships, and it still takes far longer than any other Android smartphone in the market to charge this thing.

So Apple made it possible to charge the iPhone faster, but then thought “I don’t think anyone really wants a fast charger… Why not keep your iPhone plugged in the whole day, or leave it on the AirPower mat that we won’t launch for a whole frikkin’ year.”

Anyway, we can’t do anything about this, other than buy a headphone dongle, a pair of Bluetooth earphones, and a fast charger on our own, because apparently $999 doesn’t warrant good accessories in the box.

Does the iPhone XR come with AirPods? Here’s what comes in the box

The iPhone XR hit stores in late 2018, but it’s still a viable option. If you’re looking for an Apple smartphone with a big battery and Face ID for a fair price, you can’t really do better — at least until the iPhone 13 arrives later this year. But for now, the iPhone XR is a great deal. So what comes in the box? And does the iPhone XR come with AirPods? Here’s everything you need to know.

iPhone XR specs and features

The iPhone XR features a 6.1-inch display. It packs the latest A12 Bionic processor, capable of performing super-fast artificial intelligence calculations, while the upgraded camera uses the same rear main camera as the XS and XS Max. It lacks the second rear camera and OLED screen as its larger siblings, but its cheaper price and larger screen make up for the compromise.

Apple bundles in a number of extras in the box, but these have dwindled over the years. Customers buying the original iPhone could expect to receive a dock in the box, but these add-ons have gradually left the included bundle. Here’s what you get instead:

iPhone XR box: Five-Watt Charging Adaptor

Apple surprised observers by including a five-watt power block. Rumors claimed the company may include an 18-watt brick instead, offering faster charging. While the iPhone XR supports fast charging from alternative blocks, the one in the box will offer the same speed as previous years. (This is also a nice perk considering the newest iPhones don’t come with a power block at all.)

iPhone XR box: Lightning to USB Cable

The company is still using the same charging connector as on the iPhone 5 that launched in 2012. Although its Mac range has largely switched to the smaller, reversible, USB-C connector, this cable still uses the ubiquitous regular USB connector.

Does the iPhone XR come with AirPods?

Nope. Sorry, but Apple isn’t just giving away AirPods to anyone. You need to buy them separately. The cheapest AirPods cost $159 and come with a standard, while $199 gets you a wireless charging case. The AirPods Pro cost $249.00 and feature Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode for when you want to hear what’s happening around you, a new design, and enhanced audio.

However, you do get free EarPods with the iPhone XR. The iPhone hasn’t offered a headphone jack since the introduction of the iPhone 7 in 2016, and this model is no exception. These wired headphones plug into the phone’s charging port to offer simple access to music listening and other audio. Because they don’t have a standard 3.5mm connector, you’re basically limited to using them with the iPhone itself.

Note that these are not the same as the AirPods, the $159 wireless headphones that charge up through a dental-floss-shaped holder. While Apple was expected to introduce a new version of these at its September conference, the event came and went with no sign of them.

Also, note that Apple now does not offer a 3.5mm to Lightning dongle inside the box anymore. The $9 bit of wire enables users to plug in a broader range of headphones, using the same connector that first debuted back in the 1950s. Those without Bluetooth headphones, or those that don’t feel like using Apple’s bundled set, will have to fork over the extra to reconnect their headphones.

Here’s What You Get When You Buy the iPhone X

The iPhone X is almost here. On Friday, preorders for the $999 smartphone went live on Apple’s website, with eager fans snapping up slots in a matter of minutes. There are still some ways left to get your hands on the device, but with the initial rush over, there’s a bit more time to assess what comes in the box and what you might need to buy on top of that.

It’s a big moment for Apple. Launching 10 years after the first iPhone came to market, the company’s flagship smartphone ditches some key features that users have come to expect from an iPhone. For the first time, there’s no home button, with users instead expected to learn a new swiping gesture to navigate the interface. An advanced face recognition scanner, which uses depth measurements to decide if a user is who they say they are, has reportedly slowed down the number of phones produced because of its advanced design.

Although a lot has changed, some things stay the same. Here’s what comes in the iPhone X box:

The iPhone

This probably goes without saying. You get a choice of whether you want the glass backing to come in “space gray” or “silver.” Internally, the device will either come with 64GB of storage at the $999 level, or 256GB at the $1,149 level.

EarPods

Apple’s brand name for its own set of headphones, the EarPods, were modified with the launch of the iPhone 7 last year to use a Lightning connector instead of a 3.5mm headphone jack. While this means you can plug the headphones directly into the phone hassle-free, it also means you won’t be able to use them with your computer or other devices. Still, best not to lose them as it means you won’t need to bother with any adapters to listen to music.

Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter

If you do want to use headphones with the traditional jack, Apple has provided a small cable with a headphone jack at one end and a Lightning connector at the other. Like everything else in the box, Apple sells this separately if you lose it.

USB Power Adapter

The five-watt brick included with the iPhone will charge your device from a wall outlet, but it won’t do it particularly fast. If you can get your hands on a 12-watt Apple charger or some other higher-wattage power block, you’ll be able to cut down charge times. Though, for overnight charging and the like, the bundled plug will do just fine.

Lightning to USB Cable

This is the bit that goes between the power adapter and the iPhone. Since it was introduced with the iPhone 5, it’s grown to the point of near-ubiquity. However, those who have upgraded to the new MacBook Pro or other devices that use the new USB-C shape plug won’t be able to use this cable without also using a USB-to-USB-C adapter.

Alternatively, Apple sells a Lightning to USB-C cable for cutting out the middleman. With this, you can pair it with the 29-watt USB-C power adapter to boost charge times even further.

Much like the power adapter, Apple has chosen to bundle an accessory that will do the job for most people.
