If you can’t activate your iPhone

If your iPhone can’t be activated or an alert says the activation server is unavailable or the SIM card is unsupported, learn what to do.

Before you begin

  • If you get an error message that says «No SIM» or «Invalid SIM,» learn what to do.
  • Check the list on the System Status page. If the box by iOS Device Activation isn’t green, try to activate your iPhone later.
  • If asked to enter your password as you activate your iPhone, enter the password. (A password prompt means that Activation Lock might be enabled in Find My iPhone.)

Still need help? Use the next section.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart your iPhone.
  2. If you’re using a cellular-data connection, connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network instead.
  3. If you get an error message on your iPhone that says the activation server is temporarily unavailable or cannot be reached when trying to activate, wait a few minutes, then repeat the previous steps.

If you still can’t activate your iPhone, try again using your computer instead. Here’s how:

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of macOS or the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Check that your computer has an Internet connection.
  3. With the cable that came with your iPhone, connect your iPhone to your computer. Locate your device on your computer.
  4. Wait while your computer detects and activates your iPhone:
    • If you see an alert that shows «Set up as New» or «Restore from Backup,» it means your iPhone is activated.
    • If you get an error message on your computer that says that the SIM card isn’t compatible or is invalid, contact your carrier.
    • If you get an error message that says the «activation information was invalid» or «activation information could not be obtained from the device,» use recovery mode to restore your iPhone.

If you still can’t activate your iPhone, contact Apple Support.

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Find My includes Activation Lock—a feature that’s designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, if it’s ever lost or stolen. Activation Lock turns on automatically when you turn on Find My on your device.

Activation Lock helps you keep your device secure, even if it’s in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My turned on, and remember your Apple ID and password.

With watchOS 2 and later, you can use Activation Lock to protect your Apple Watch. And with macOS Catalina or later and Mac computers that have the Apple T2 Security Chip or Apple silicon you can use Activation Lock to protect your Mac, too.

Here’s how it works

Each time an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, or Mac computer that has an Apple T2 security chip or Apple silicon is activated or recovered, the device contacts Apple to check whether Activation Lock is turned on.

Activation Lock turns on automatically when you set up Find My.* After it’s turned on, Apple securely stores your Apple ID on its activation servers and links it to your device. Your Apple ID password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your device, or reactivate and use your device.

If your device is lost or stolen

If you ever misplace your device—whether it’s lost or you think it might have been stolen—you should immediately use Mark As Lost in the Find My app.

Mark As Lost locks your screen with a passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed. Your custom message continues to display even after the device is erased.

While Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, Lost Mode clearly shows anyone who finds your device that it still belongs to you and can’t be reactivated without your password.

If you forget your Apple ID or password

Your Apple ID is the account that you use to sign in to all Apple services. Usually, your Apple ID is your email address. If you forget it, we can help you find your Apple ID.

If you can’t find your Apple ID or reset your password, you’ll lose access to your account and might be unable to use or reactivate your device. To help prevent this, visit your Apple ID account page periodically to review and update your account information.

Check for Activation Lock before you buy a device from someone else

Before you buy an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, from someone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller, make sure that the device is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s account.

On a device with iOS or iPadOS 15 or later that is protected by Activation Lock, you see an «iPhone Locked to Owner» screen when you turn on or wake the device. Don’t take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it’s protected by Activation Lock.

If you don’t see that screen, follow these steps to check if the device is ready to use:

  1. Turn on and unlock the device.
  2. If the passcode Lock Screen or the Home Screen appears, the device hasn’t been erased. Ask the seller to follow the steps below to completely erase the device. Don’t take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it’s been erased.
  3. Begin the device setup process.
  4. If you’re asked for the previous owner’s Apple ID and password, the device is still linked to their account. Hand the device back to the seller and ask them to enter their password. If the previous owner isn’t present, contact them as soon as possible and ask them to use a browser to remove the device from their account. Don’t take ownership of any used iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch until it has been removed from the previous owner’s account.

A device is ready for you to use when you see the Hello screen.

Before you give away your device or send it in for service

Make sure that you turn off Find My on your device before you give it away or send it in for repair. Otherwise, your device is locked and anyone that you give the device to can’t use it normally and Apple technicians can’t perform service repairs. Just sign out of iCloud and then erase all content and settings. This completely erases your device, removes it from your Apple ID, and turns off Find My.

Set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Learn how to set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

If you’re switching to a new device

If you want to transfer your information from another device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, follow these steps:

Make sure that you back up your previous iOS device so that you can transfer the content to the new device.

If you’re setting up your first iOS device

If you already set up your new device but want to start over, learn how to erase your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Otherwise, follow these steps:

Turn on your device

Press and hold the device’s power button until you see the Apple logo. You’ll then see «Hello» in many languages. Follow the steps to get started. If you’re blind or have low vision, you can turn on VoiceOver or Zoom from the Hello screen.

When asked, choose your language. Then tap your country or region. This affects how information looks on your device, including date, time, contacts, and more. At this point, you can tap the blue accessibility button to set up Accessibility Options that can optimize your setup experience and the use of your new device.

If you have another device, use Quick Start

If you have another device, you can use it to automatically set up your new device with Quick Start. Bring the two devices close together, and then follow the instructions.

If you don’t have another device, tap «Set Up Manually» to continue.

Activate your device

You need to connect to a Wi-Fi network, a cellular network, or iTunes to activate and continue setting up your device.

Tap the Wi-Fi network that you want to use or select a different option. If you’re setting up an iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular), you might need to insert your iPhone SIM card or iPad SIM card first.

Set up Face ID or Touch ID and create a passcode

On some devices, you can set up Face ID or Touch ID. With these features, you can use face recognition or your fingerprint to unlock your device and make purchases. Tap Continue and follow the instructions, or tap «Set Up Later in Settings.»

Next, set a six-digit passcode to help protect your data. You need a passcode to use features like Face ID, Touch ID, and Apple Pay. If you’d like a four-digit passcode, custom passcode, or no passcode, tap «Passcode Options.»

Restore or transfer your information and data

If you have an iCloud backup or a backup made from your computer or an Android device, you can restore or transfer your data from your old device to your new device.

If you don’t have a backup or another device, select Don’t Transfer Apps & Data.

Sign in with your Apple ID

Enter your Apple ID and password, or tap «Forgot password or don’t have an Apple ID?» From there, you can recover your Apple ID or password, create an Apple ID, or set it up later. If you use more than one Apple ID, tap «Use different Apple IDs for iCloud and iTunes?»

When you sign in with your Apple ID, you might be prompted for a verification code from your previous device.

Turn on automatic updates and set up other features

On the next screens, you can decide whether to share information with app developers and allow iOS to update automatically.

Set up Siri and other services

Next, you’ll be asked to set up or enable services and features, like Siri. On some devices, you’ll be asked to speak a few phrases so that Siri can get to know your voice.

If you signed in with your Apple ID, follow the steps to set up Apple Pay and iCloud Keychain.

Set up Screen Time and more display options

Screen Time gives you insight into how much time you and your kids spend on your devices. It also lets you set time limits for daily app use. After you set up Screen Time, you can turn on True Tone if your device supports it, and use Display Zoom to adjust the size of icons and text on your Home screen.

If you have an iPhone X or later, learn more about using gestures to navigate your device. If you have an iPhone with a Home button, you can adjust the click for your Home button.

Finish up

Tap «Get Started» to begin using your device. Make a safe copy of your data by backing up, and learn about more features in the user guide for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

How to pick up your iPhone

Wireless carriers have guidelines for who can pick up a contract iPhone order. Below you’ll find information about who can pick up your iPhone order.

Is the iPhone to upgrade or replace a line on an existing wireless account?

An iPhone upgrade or replacement on an existing wireless service contract can be picked up by the primary account holder or by a person authorized by the account holder. Please contact your carrier to verify authorized users.

Is the iPhone SIM-free (unlocked and contract-free)?

An unlocked iPhone (one without any carrier contract) can be picked up by the purchaser or a designated pickup contact.

To pick up your iPhone in an Apple Store, the primary account holder or the authorized user will need to bring the following:

  • Card used for payment or Order Number
  • Valid photo ID

If your photo ID does not match the billing address on your account, please bring a second form of ID (for example, a utility bill) with the correct address.

Activate Your iPhone

Activating your iPhone is easy! You can activate over a Wi-Fi network, or activate and sync your contacts, music, photos, and more through the latest version of iTunes.

To activate with Wi-Fi, you’ll need:

Simply hold the On/Off button and follow the onscreen instructions. If you don’t have access to a Wi-Fi network, you can activate with the latest version of iTunes.

To activate with iTunes, you’ll need:

  • Your iPhone
  • The latest version of iTunes — Download (Opens in a new window)
  • Your Apple ID — What is an Apple ID? (Opens in a new window)

Just connect to your computer and iTunes will guide you through activation, as well as sync your music, video, bookmarks, and contacts.

Voicemail

Please note that activation may delete your existing voicemails. If you are transferring an existing number from another network operator, existing voicemails may not be transferred.

Transferring your mobile number

If you are transferring a mobile number, the process may take as little as 15 minutes or up to 6 hours to complete. If you are transferring a home number, the process may take up to 5-7 days to complete. While the transfer is in process, you will be able to make outgoing calls with your iPhone, but incoming calls will be sent to your current phone.

When the transfer is complete, you will receive a text message. Transferring a number from another wireless carrier ends your current service and termination fees may apply.

Support and Training

Apple designed iPhone to be incredibly simple to use. Nevertheless, there may be times that you could use a little help.

Accessory compatibility

While there are thousands of accessories that have been designed specifically for iPod, not all of these are fully compatible with iPhone. This is because cell phones can cause audio interference with some accessories.

To ensure the best possible customer experience, Apple has created special iPhone compatibility requirements for accessory manufacturers. Products that are engineered and certified to be compatible with iPhone carry a «Works with iPhone» logo on the packaging.

If you connect iPhone to an accessory that was not made to work with iPhone, you can activate Airplane Mode while connected to the accessory. This will avoid any potential audio interference, but you will not be able to make or receive calls. If you choose not to activate Airplane Mode, you will still be able to make and receive calls, but you may experience some audio interference.

SALES & REFUND TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“TERMS”)

U.S. Sales and Refund Policy

Thanks for shopping at Apple. We appreciate the fact that you like to buy the cool stuff we build. We also want to make sure you have a rewarding experience while you’re exploring, evaluating, and purchasing our products, whether you’re at the Apple Online Store, in an Apple Retail Store, or on the phone with the Apple Contact Center. (To make it visually easier on both of us, we’ll refer to these entities as the “Apple Store” in this policy.)

As with any shopping experience, there are terms and conditions that apply to transactions at an Apple Store. We’ll be as brief as our attorneys will allow. The main thing to remember is that by placing an order or making a purchase at an Apple Store, you agree to the terms set forth below along with Apple’s Privacy Policy (Opens in a new window) and Terms of Use (Opens in a new window) .

Standard Return Policy

We fundamentally believe you will be thrilled with the products you purchase from the Apple Store. That’s because we go out of our way to ensure that they’re designed and built to be just what you need. We understand, however, that sometimes a product may not be what you expected it to be. In that unlikely event, we invite you to review the following terms related to returning a product.

For any undamaged product, simply return it with its included accessories and packaging along with the original receipt (or gift receipt) within 14 days of the date you receive the product, and we’ll exchange it or offer a refund based upon the original payment method. In addition, please note the following:

  • Products can be returned only in the country or region in which they were originally purchased.
  • The following products are not eligible for return: electronic software downloads, subscriptions to the Software-Up-To-Date program, Apple Store Gift Cards, and any Apple Developer Connection products.
  • For returns to an Apple Retail Store for cash, cash equivalent, and check transactions over $750, Apple will mail a refund check to you within 10 business days.
  • Should you wish to return ten or more of the same product, you must return to the Apple Store where originally purchased.
  • In the case of items returned with a gift receipt, Apple will offer you an Apple Gift Card.
  • Opened software cannot be returned if it contained a seal with the software license on the outside of the package and you could read the software license before opening its packaging. As an exception, you may return Apple-branded software if you do not agree to the licensing terms; however, you may not retain or otherwise use any copies of returned software.
  • Apple provides security features to enable you to protect your product in case of loss or theft. If these features have been activated and cannot be disabled by the person in possession of the phone, Apple may refuse the return or exchange.
  • For complete details on how to return a product purchased at the Apple Store please visit the Returns & Refunds (Opens in a new window) page.

Return of AppleCare+ under an iPhone Upgrade Program

Should you return the AppleCare+ portion of your iPhone Upgrade Program, please note that you will lose your Upgrade Option as set forth under the terms of the iPhone Upgrade Program (Opens in a new window) .

iPhone, iPad and Watch Returns — Wireless Service Cancellation

Wireless carriers have different service cancellation policies. Returning your iPhone, iPad or Watch may not automatically cancel or reset your wireless account; you are responsible for your wireless service agreement and for any applicable fees associated with your wireless account. Please contact your wireless service provider for more information.

Apple Watch Returns

Apple Watch from the Edition collection may only be returned or exchanged if it’s in its original, undamaged and unmarked condition after passing inspection at Apple’s offsite facility. Depending on your original form of tender, a check, wire transfer, or refund to your debit/credit card will be issued within 10 business days provided the returned item is in its original condition.

Additional Apple Product Terms

The purchase and use of Apple products are subject to additional terms and conditions found at https://www.apple.com/legal/sla/ (Opens in a new window) and https://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/ (Opens in a new window) .

Making unauthorized modifications to the software on an iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement. The common term for modifying an iPhone is jail-breaking, with a particular emphasis on the second part of that term. That’s why we strongly, almost emphatically, recommend that you do not do so. Really. Should you be unable to use your iPhone due to an unauthorized software modification, its repair will not be covered under the warranty.

Pricing and Price Reductions/Corrections

Apple reserves the right to change prices for products displayed at/on the Apple Store at any time, and to correct pricing errors that may inadvertently occur. Additional information about pricing and sales tax is available on the Payment & Pricing (Opens in a new window) page. In the event you have been charged more than the posted price for a product in an Apple Retail Store, please see a Manager for a refund of the overcharge.

Should Apple reduce its price on any Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days from the date you receive your product, feel free to visit an Apple Retail Store or contact the Apple Contact Center at 1-800-676-2775 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit you must contact Apple within 14 calendar days of the price change. Please note that this excludes limited-time price reductions, such as those that occur during special sales events, such as Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Price protection is only available for up to 10 units of a particular product. Additionally, we may require that you have the product with you or otherwise have proof of possession when requesting price protection.

Prices shown are in U.S. dollars. If you are paying for your order with an international Visa, MasterCard, or American Express credit card, please note that the purchase price may fluctuate with exchange rates. In addition, your bank or credit card issuer may also charge you foreign conversion charges and fees, which may also increase the overall cost of your purchase. Please contact your bank or credit card issuer regarding these fees.

Order Acceptance/Confirmation

Apple may, in its sole discretion, refuse or cancel any order and limit order quantity. Apple may also require additional qualifying information prior to accepting or processing any order. Once we receive your Online or Call Center order, we’ll provide you with an email order confirmation. Your receipt of an order confirmation, however, does not signify Apple’s acceptance of your order, nor does it constitute confirmation of our offer to sell; we are simply confirming that we received your order. The Apple Store reserves the right at any time after receiving your order to accept or decline your order for any reason. If Apple cancels an order after you have already been billed, Apple will refund the billed amount.

Shipping & Delivery

Please review the Shipping & Pickup (Opens in a new window) page to learn about how and when you will receive the products you purchased from the Apple Store. Since the actual delivery of your order can be impacted by many events beyond Apple’s control once it leaves our facilities, Apple cannot be held liable for late deliveries. We will, however, work with you to ensure a smooth delivery.

As Apple takes care of the dispatch of the products you purchase on the Apple Store, the risk of loss of, or damage to, product(s) shall pass to you when you, or a person designated by you, acquires physical possession of the product(s). Title in the product(s) shall pass to you when the product(s) is picked up by the carrier from our warehouse. At this point, you will receive the Shipment Notification Email. If there are any issues with delivery, please contact Apple to resolve.

In-Store Pickup and Return

Apple offers in-store pickup for many of the items available on the Online Store. Certain products and payment methods, however, may not qualify for in-store pickup. Only you or the person designated by you may pick up the item(s) purchased. A government-issued photo ID and order number will be required for pickup. Apple will notify you when your order is ready and the date by which you need to pick up your items. We’ll also send you a reminder or two, just in case it slips your mind. If you don’t pick up your order, Apple may cancel it. Please click here (Opens in a new window) for complete details about in-store pickup.

Pickup Contact

If you select in-store pickup, you may designate a third party to pick up your order. You must provide the name and email address of the third party. Please note that certain products and payment methods are not eligible for in-store pickup by a third party. The third party will need to bring a government issued photo ID and order number for pickup. Apple is not responsible for actions taken by the third party once your item(s) have been picked up.

Consumers Only

The Apple Store sells and ships products to end-user customers only, and we reserve the right to refuse or cancel your order if we suspect you are purchasing products for resale.

U.S. Shipping Only

Products purchased online from Apple will only be shipped to addresses within the U.S. and are subject to U.S. and foreign export control laws and regulations. Products must be purchased, sold, exported, re-exported, transferred, and used in compliance with these export laws and regulations. To purchase Apple products online from outside of the U.S., please click here for international store information.

Product Availability and Limitations

Given the popularity and/or supply constraints of some of our products, Apple may have to limit the number of products available for purchase. Trust us, we’re building them as fast as we can. Apple reserves the right to change quantities available for purchase at any time, even after you place an order. Furthermore, there may be occasions when Apple confirms your order but subsequently learns that it cannot supply the ordered product. In the event we cannot supply a product you ordered, Apple will cancel the order and refund your purchase price in full.
