Добрый день, уважаемые читатели.

На Mobile-Review всегда широкий отклик вызывают обсуждения автомобилей, ваши комментарии на эту тему показывают естественную заинтересованность в данном вопросе. В связи с этим возникла идея рассказать о том, что существует на стыке пользовательской электроники и автоиндустрии – мультимедийных системах в автомобилях, а точнее, о способах объединения штатной развлекательной системы и ОС вашего смартфона. Для начала давайте вспомним, что автопроизводители делают сегодня, чтобы развлечь нас в дороге. Говорить будем скорее о штатных системах, чтобы не углубляться еще и в сторонние варианты, которые устанавливаются по инициативе владельца.

Самый простой и дешевый вариант – та самая магнитола (головное устройство) с несколькими подключенными колонками. В зависимости от вложений владельца такой вариант может обрасти чудными сабвуферами и усилителями в неограниченных количествах. Варианты развлечений также базовые – FM-радио, USB-накопитель с коллекцией «Тысяча и одна лезгинка» и, пожалуй, все. В принципе, такой вариант характерен для самых распространенных авто вроде Kia Rio или Hyundai Solaris и покрывает потребности весомой части автовладельцев.

Системы чуть повыше уровнем уже в состоянии подключить ваш смартфон по Bluetooth и использовать часть его возможностей – вывести телефонный разговор на штатную аудиосистему, таким же образом воспроизвести вашу музыкальную коллекцию (в том числе с использованием стриминговых сервисов и поддержкой управления воспроизведением средствами автомобиля) и так далее. В таких системах уже бывает управление функциями автомобиля – настраиваемые параметры, управление техническим обслуживанием (замена масла и т.д.), может быть навигация, интеграция с камерами внешнего обзора. Подобные системы характерны уже для авто гольф-класса и, кроме базового функционала, предлагают чуть больше – соответственно, здесь уже появляется более или менее современный дисплей для отображения интерфейса. В качестве примера можно привести, например, MZD Connect, устанавливаемую на современную линейку автомобилей Mazda, или Sync, разработанный Microsoft для Ford.

Ну и еще более продвинутая техника позволяет настроить десятки параметров авто, воспроизводить массу форматов файлов, выводить на экран навигацию, картинку с камер кругового обзора, показывать водителю и пассажиру разную картинку и плясать канкан. Правда, цена такого железа в конфигураторе недешевого, вообще говоря, авто, заставит вас сказать что-нибудь нецензурное – ценник в данной категории только начнется примерно от 150 тысяч рублей. Примеры – системы Audi MMI, BMW iDrive или новый Volvo Sensus.

И во всем этом многообразии мы видим проблему, которая часто мешает двигать индустрию вперед, – отсутствие единых стандартов. Каждый производитель делает свои мультимедийные системы для разных авто. На одну модель могут устанавливать разные комплексы в соответствии с пожеланиями клиента. В рамках одного концерна производители делают несколько систем – ну должны же автомобили чем-то отличаться. В одной и той же системе могут присутствовать или отсутствовать определенные функции в зависимости от модели.

Решение этой проблемы и предлагают нам производители смартфонов – софт для более глубокой интеграции мультимедиа автомобиля и ОС смартфона. Здесь с разнообразием попроще, выбор соответствует базовому выбору лагеря – Android с Android Auto или Apple со своим CarPlay. Вот о них и хочется сегодня поговорить.

Объекты и методика тестирования

Рассматривать системы будем на примере вышеупомянутого комплекса Sync 3.0, установленного в автомобиле Ford Focus (третье поколение модели, рестайлинговый кузов, комплектация Titanium). В качестве подопытных аппаратов я использовал Honor 9 и iPhone 6s. Основное, что хочется рассмотреть, – способ соединения с автомобилем, интерфейс, варианты взаимодействия с интерфейсом и сценарии использования. Я не буду сравнивать платформы «лоб в лоб», вместо этого постараюсь сосредоточиться на общих ощущениях от использования. Начнем с Android Auto.

Android Auto

Первое, что нужно сделать для синхронизации, – установить на смартфон приложение Android Auto. Устанавливаем. Заодно разрешаем работу Voice Control на смартфоне, если это не сделано. Далее сталкиваемся со способом подключения, и вот тут уже начинаются вопросы. Если просто спарить смартфон и авто по Bluetooth, создается обычное подключение с соответствующими возможностями (разговоры, музыка и т.д.), но без использования Android Auto. Ок, отключаем Bluetooth, подключаем по кабелю – смартфон предлагает выбрать метод использования (USB-накопитель, модем), но не предлагает использовать Android Auto. Само приложение на смартфоне запускается, работает, но не отзеркаливает интерфейс на дисплей Sync. Результат удается получить, включив Bluetooth при наличии соединения по кабелю – наконец происходит объединение интерфейсов и начало работы, на экране автомобиля появляется стартовый экран. Ура.

Смартфон на колесах: что такое и как работают Apple CarPlay и Android Auto

Когда-то приходилось платить за навигационную систему в автомобиле, но сейчас все проще: можно дублировать на экран навигацию смартфона. И не только ее. Рассказываем о крайне полезных для автомобилиста функциях медиасистем.

С разницей в год — CarPlay был представлен в 2014-м, а Android Auto — в 2015 году — Apple и Google, занимающие доминирующее положение на рынке смартфонов, показали свои варианты сопряжения мобильных устройств с автомобильными мультимедийными системами. Опыт оказался настолько удачным, что с каждым годом возможности этих протоколов становятся все шире, а поддержку CarPlay и Android Auto в свои продукты внедряют все больше автопроизводителей и компаний, выпускающих автомобильную электронику.

Появление CarPlay и Android Auto стало логичным ответом на развитие мобильных устройств. Если для телефонов, основной функцией которых были голосовые звонки, достаточно было системы hands free и подключения к автомобилю по Bluetooth, то iPhone и смартфоны на Android имели уже множество возможностей, пользоваться которыми водители хотели во время движения — в первую очередь навигацией и музыкальным плеером — а отвлекаться на экран мобильного устройства на ходу было небезопасно и неудобно.

Смартфон в вашей медиасистеме

Тогда-то в Apple и Google и предложили оптимальный сценарий использования — проводное (сейчас некоторые модели автомобилей поддерживают и беспроводное подключение) соединение смартфона с мультимедийной системой, которое позволяло одновременно и заряжать гаджет, и выводить часть его функций на штатные органы управления автомобиля.

Проще говоря, CarPlay и Android Auto дали возможность с помощью клавиш на руле и на самой мультимедийной системе управлять подключенным смартфоном. Само устройство переходило в особый режим, блокируя на время соединения с автомобилем часть своих функций, а остальные переводила в формат удобного взаимодействия за рулем — на экране с минималистичной графикой появлялись крупные сенсорные клавиши, громкость можно было регулировать штатными кнопками или крутилками, а кроме того поддерживались голосовые ассистенты.

Что доступно в CarPlay/Android Auto?

Базовый функционал обеих систем крайне близок — возможность принимать и совершать голосовые звонки, слушать музыку и подкасты со смартфона или установленных на него стриминговых сервисах, прослушивать и записывать сообщения голосом, пользоваться мобильным навигатором и онлайн-поиском — и отличается лишь перечнем доступных в режиме подключения к автомобилю приложений. Apple отличается традиционной закрытостью и только в 2020-2021 годах начала допускать в CarPlay больше софта от сторонних разработчиков, тогда как Google изначально имела более широкий вариант выбора программ для использования в Android Auto.

Технически реализация CarPlay и Android Auto теперь уже тоже практически не отличается — если автомобиль поддерживает эти протоколы, то подключенный к нему смартфон распознается автоматически и может быть переведен в соответствующий режим. Apple по умолчанию добавила CarPlay в операционную систему с iOS 7.1, а у Google до Android 10 возможностями Android Auto можно было пользоваться только после скачивания на гаджет отдельного одноименного приложения.

Какие автомобили поддерживают CarPlay/Android Auto?

Поддержку CarPlay и Android Auto имеют практически все современные автомобили с мультимедийными системами, оснащенными тачскрином. Абсолютное большинство брендов — как автомобильных, так и выпускающих мультимедиа — добавляет в свои продукты сразу оба протокола, так что проблем с использованием смартфонов не будет. В Apple заявляют, что CarPlay на сегодняшний день поддерживает более 600 моделей автомобилей, а в Google обещают наличие Android Auto на более чем 500 моделях машин самых разных брендов — от премиальных Ferrari и Rolls-Royce до массовых Skoda и даже Lada. Кроме того, CarPlay можно встретить даже на мотоциклах — поддержку iPhone получили ряд моделей Harley-Davidson, Indian, Honda и Polaris.

В чем секрет популярности этих протоколов? В повышении безопасности и удобстве пользования смартфоном и приложениями за рулем — подключение гаджета к автомобилю позволяет получить основные функции устройства в поездке без необходимости постоянно держать смартфон в руке и отвлекаться на управление им на маленьком сенсорном экране.

Вместо этого гаджет интегрируется в бортовую систему и водитель получает возможность контролировать его удобными элементами управления на руле или центральной консоли. А заодно расширяется функционал мультимедиа и появляется ее более гибкая настройка.

Чем дешевле становится электроника, тем больше моделей и комплектаций автомобилей получают мультимедиа с сенсорными экранами, а значит — растет число пользователей CarPlay и Android Auto. Автовладельцы получают возможность обзавестись расширенным функционалом штатных мультимедийных систем, автопроизводители могут сэкономить на разработке приложений для своих моделей, а в Apple и Google получают еще более лояльную аудиторию. Плюсом ко всему на дорогах становится хоть немного, да безопаснее.

Specifics to Note

Some caveats exist for the two lists above. For cars that offer wireless Apple CarPlay or wireless Android Auto integration, the feature may not always be standard. In many cases, automakers restrict wireless access to certain trim levels or optional packages, with conventional wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto elsewhere. In similar fashion, certain variants related to the root nameplate (a hybrid or high-performance version, for example) may also offer the feature, so you’ll want to research the model therein for more specifics. We point out differentiations (the Golf GTI versus the regular Golf, for example) whenever possible.

Finally, this information reflects what we’ve learned from major automakers at the time of this writing, excluding exotic or ultra-luxury brands. Technologies can, and increasingly do, change down the road as automakers incorporate cars that can accept over-the-air updates. BMW, for one, now offers wireless Android Auto in certain models via over-the-air updates to its Live Cockpit Professional and iDrive 7 interface. It’s possible other cars with similar capabilities may do the same, though it’s less likely that current models with neither wireless Apple CarPlay nor wireless Android Auto will get one or both, for reasons we lay out below.

BMW was the first automaker to the party, offering wireless Apple CarPlay on select cars beginning with the 2017 model year. Mini, an affiliate of BMW, followed in 2018, and Audi added the feature in 2019. Still, wireless CarPlay from the factory remains rare — despite Apple offering compatibility since iOS 9 way back in 2015 — and wireless Android Auto is still aftermarket-only. The vast majority of both platforms today still require a physical USB cable.

Which Cars Offer Wireless Apple CarPlay?

Counting hybrid variants as separate cars, 27 models from three brands offer wireless Apple CarPlay for the 2019 model year, either as standard or optional equipment. The BMW Group is out ahead on the feature, offering it on all models with factory navigation across the BMW and Mini brands.

Which Cars Have Wireless Android Auto?

As of this writing, none. Wireless Android Auto is reportedly rolling out more slowly — and only on certain smartphones — versus its Apple counterpart. A few aftermarket stereos now offer wireless integration with certain compatible phones, but no cars for the 2019 model year offer factory wireless compatibility; all connections still require a USB cable. However, some cars could get wireless Android Auto as soon as the 2020 model year.

Android is “actively working with our OEM partners [that is, automakers] to roll out to vehicles soon,” said Ivy Chen, the communications lead at Google’s Android Auto division. “Wireless support by automotive OEMs will start to happen this fall.”

How Does the Connection Work?

The connection needs in-vehicle Wi-Fi, as Bluetooth alone isn’t robust enough. The latter enables phone calls or streaming music, but it ultimately supports relatively little data. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto need a hardier connection — the impetus behind a physical cable in the first place, which both systems required at inception. A Wi-Fi connection to the multimedia system through an in-vehicle router accommodates more data. It’s the “only wireless protocol that has enough bandwidth to support phone mirroring,” explained David Amodeo, J.D. Power’s director of global automotive.

The downside of such a data-intensive connection? It kills your battery. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can exact such a heavy drain that we’ve observed phones tethered to older-generation USB ports lose their battery charge while using the systems, so robust charging sources are a must. Wireless charging pads have answered the call — a feature that’s proliferated across the industry, especially in cars with wireless Apple CarPlay.

If My Car Already Has Wi-Fi, Could I Get Wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?

That’s unlikely because it isn’t that simple. Almost all cars with in-vehicle Wi-Fi (think GM’s built-in 4G LTE hot spot) have a single-band router, explained Colin Bird-Martinez, a senior tech analyst at IHS Markit. And just like good Wi-Fi at home needs a dual-band router — one for phones and laptops, the other to stream Netflix — any car with wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto needs unique dual-band hardware, Bird-Martinez said.

Another requirement? An in-vehicle GPS receiver, which most cars package with in-dash navigation. Even if you seldom use the car’s system, any smartphone connected to wireless CarPlay will hitch a ride on its GPS signal. Like the dual-band router, it’s all for the sake of minimizing interference.

“Your phone has a modem, and it also has a Wi-Fi receiver, and it also has GPS — and if you’re connected to Wi-Fi and you’re trying to use GPS at the same time, there can be interference,” Bird-Martinez said. “If you’re using wireless [CarPlay], you must have a navigation system in your car.”

For similar reasons, don’t expect automakers to enable conventional Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to work wirelessly down the road. It’s doubtful that many of them, if any at all, have the right hardware.

Does the Connection Require a Paid Subscription to the Car’s Wi-Fi?

No. The Wi-Fi hot spot is separate, enabling devices inside the car to go online without using cellular data. Cars with it generally charge a monthly subscription fee after a free trial period, but BMW and Audi both confirmed the subscription need not be active for wireless Apple CarPlay to work.

That said, your car may require a paid subscription to keep Apple CarPlay active in any form. Most automakers don’t tie CarPlay to a subscription, but BMW requires you to pay after the first year of ownership, and Mini requires it after the first four years.

One final caveat: Without any active Wi-Fi hot spot in the car, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will likely use your phone’s cellular data regardless of whether it’s through a USB cord or wireless connection. That, of course, may result in you incurring extra charges on your cellphone bill depending on data usage.

Is the Wireless Connection Slower Than a Physical Connection?

It shouldn’t be. Google’s Chen called the data transfer for wireless Android Auto “robust,” adding that the experience “should be consistent whether the user is connected via USB or wireless.”

Apple officials did not respond to Cars.com’s questions for this report, but IHS Markit’s Bird-Martinez said a wireless connection shouldn’t add much lag. “The purpose of the dual band is to make sure the screen projection isn’t on the same channel as devices connected to the hot spot,” he said. “In theory, the latency should be minimal.”

When Will More Cars Have Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

It’s hard to say. Chen said wireless Android Auto “will expand [among automakers] over the coming year or so,” while Audi said it expects wireless Apple CarPlay to become available across most of its lineup in the 2020 model year. Mercedes-Benz said last year that its forthcoming MBUX multimedia system would support wireless CarPlay, but a spokeswoman told Cars.com that no model-year 2019 vehicle has the feature.

Bird-Martinez warns that the full cost of hardware will limit which cars offer it at first.

“Requiring the GPS [and] navigation and the dual-band router is expensive tech that you’ll usually only find on luxury cars right now,” he said. “It’ll grow slowly over the next couple of years.”
