Security and your Apple ID

Learn more about security and your Apple ID.

Your Apple ID is the account you use to access Apple services like the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, iMessage, FaceTime, and more. It includes the email address and password you use to sign in as well as the contact, payment, and security details you use across Apple services. Apple takes the privacy of your personal information very seriously and employs industry-standard practices to safeguard your Apple ID.

Here are some of the best practices you can follow to maximize the security of your account.

Use a strong password for your Apple ID

Apple policy requires you use strong passwords with your Apple ID. Your password must have eight or more characters and include upper and lowercase letters, and at least one number. You can also add extra characters and punctuation marks to make your password even stronger. Apple also uses other password rules to make sure your password isn’t easy to guess.

If you aren’t sure if you have a strong password, visit your Apple ID account page to reset your password as soon as possible.

Make the answers to your security questions hard to guess

Apple uses security questions to provide you with a secondary method to identify yourself online or when contacting Apple Support. Security questions are designed to be memorable to you but hard for anyone else to guess. When used in conjunction with other identifying information, they help Apple verify that you are the person who is requesting access to your account. If you haven’t selected your security questions, visit your Apple ID account page to set them up.

Protect your account with two-factor authentication

Apple offers an improved security method called two-factor authentication that’s designed to ensure that you’re the only person who can access your account, even if someone else knows your password. When you enter your Apple ID and password for the first time on a new device, we’ll ask you to verify your identity with a six-digit verification code. This code is displayed automatically on your other devices, or sent to a phone number you trust. Just enter the code to sign in and access your account on the new device. Never share your password or verification code with anyone else.

If you use iOS 11.3 or later on your iPhone, you might not need to enter a verification code. In some cases, your trusted phone number can be automatically verified in the background on your iPhone. It’s one less thing to do, and your account is still protected with two-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication is built directly into iOS, macOS, tvOS, watchOS, and Apple’s websites. You can use two-factor authentication with your Apple ID if you have a device that’s using the latest iOS or macOS, or if you have access to a web browser and a phone number. Two-factor authentication is the default security method for some new Apple IDs created on iOS 10.3 or later and macOS 10.12.4 or later.

If you don’t have devices that can be updated to iOS 9 or later, or OS X El Capitan or later, you can set up two-step verification for your Apple ID instead.

You need two-factor authentication to use certain features that require improved security.

Check for encryption and SSL

All web pages where you can view or change your Apple ID use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to protect your privacy. In Safari, look for in your browser when accessing your account at your Apple ID account page to know your session is fully encrypted and secure.

Employee privacy and security policies

In addition to strong passwords, encryption, and other technology, Apple has strict policies and procedures in place to prevent unauthorized access to your account. Without proof of your identity via a temporary Support PIN and other carefully selected criteria, Apple Support can’t help you perform any actions on your account. These policies are audited and reviewed on a regular basis.

Other tips for keeping your account secure

Good online security requires a combination of practices by companies using Internet services and informed behavior by users. Below are some tips to follow to maximize your security when using your Apple ID and other online accounts.

  • Always use a strong password.
  • Never use your Apple ID password with other online accounts.
  • Change your password regularly and avoid reusing old passwords.
  • Choose security questions and answers that can’t be easily guessed. Your answers can even be nonsense as long as you can remember them. For example, Question: What is your favorite color? Answer: Mozart.
  • If you abandon an email address or phone number associated with your Apple ID, be sure to update your Apple ID with current information as soon as possible.
  • Set up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID to add an extra layer of security to your account and eliminate the need for security questions.
  • Avoid phishing scams. Don’t click links in suspicious email or text messages and never provide personal information on any website you aren’t certain is legitimate. Learn how to identify phishing attempts.
  • Don’t share your Apple ID with other people, even family members.
  • When using a public computer, always sign out when your session is complete to prevent other people from accessing your account.

Never provide your password, security questions, verification codes, recovery key, or any other account security details to anyone else. Apple will never ask you for this information.

If Apple Support needs to verify your identity, we might ask you to generate a temporary Support PIN. We’ll only ask for this information over the phone after you contact Apple Support for help.

What is Sign in with Apple?

Sign in with Apple is the fast, easy, and more private way to sign in to third-party apps and websites using the Apple ID that you already have.

About Sign in with Apple

When you see a Sign in with Apple button on a participating app or website, it means you can set up an account using your Apple ID. No need to use a social media account, fill out forms, or choose another new password.

Sign in with Apple is built from the ground up to respect your privacy and keep you in control of your personal information. It works natively on iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS, and in any browser.

Privacy and security

  • At your first sign in, apps and websites can ask only for your name and email address to set up an account for you.
  • You can use Hide My Email—Apple’s private email relay service—to create and share a unique, random email address that forwards to your personal email. This lets you receive useful messages from the app without sharing your personal email address. Learn more about how Hide My Email works.
  • Sign in with Apple won’t track or profile you as you use your favorite apps and websites. Apple retains only the information that’s needed to make sure you can sign in and manage your account.
  • Security is built in to Sign in with Apple with two-factor authentication. If you use an Apple device, you can sign in and re-authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID anytime.

Use Sign in with Apple

To use Sign in with Apple, tap the Sign in with Apple button on a participating app or website, review your information, and sign in quickly and securely with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.

Learn how to use Sign in with Apple on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or web browser.

You need to be signed in with your Apple ID in System Preferences > Apple ID on your Mac or Settings > [your name] on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You also need two-factor authentication turned on. Learn more.

Learn more

  • If you don’t see a Sign in With Apple button, that app or website doesn’t support Sign in With Apple yet.

Your Account & Apple ID

What is an Apple ID?

An Apple Account/Apple ID lets you personalise your Apple on-line experience. Once you have created an Apple Account/Apple ID you will use it to access those Apple online resources which require you to identify yourself. Additionally, your Apple ID gives you access to other Apple resources including:

  • Buying music, movies, and TV shows on the iTunes Store
  • Buying or downloading applications on the App Store
  • Ordering photos and photo books with iPhoto or Aperture
  • Registering your Apple products
  • Accessing support for your products from AppleCare

Wireless Services

Some Apple products utilise wireless services that may incur extra costs and are governed by the terms of a separate agreement between you and your selected wireless service provider. For more information, contact your wireless service provider.

Pricing and Price Reductions/Corrections

Apple reserves the right to change prices for products displayed on the Apple Store at any time and to correct pricing errors that may inadvertently occur. Any price changes will not affect an order that has already been accepted by Apple. In the event of a pricing error, we will notify you of the error and allow you to either proceed with the transaction at the correct price or cancel your order at no cost to you. Additional information about pricing and taxes is available in the Payment & Pricing section of the Help page located at http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/payments.

In addition to your right to cancel your order, return a product or cancel a service contract for any reason as explained above, should Apple reduce its price on any Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days from the date you receive your product, feel free to contact the Apple Store by freephone on 0800 048 0408 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit, you must contact Apple within 14 calendar days of the price change. Please note that this excludes limited-time price reductions, such as those that occur during special sales events.

Order, Order Acknowledgement and Order Acceptance

To place an order for products or services at the Apple Store, you can visit the store website at http://www.apple.com/uk or use the Apple Store mobile app, and then simply add the products you wish to your shopping bag, check out (using your chosen payment method) with your Apple ID or as a guest customer, and have your items shipped to you or to a person designated by you. Alternatively, you can call the Apple Store freephone number on 0800 048 0408 Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-18:00 and an Apple Specialist will assist you through the entire order process, from product selection to payment method. Whichever way you choose to order, you will be given an opportunity to review your order prior to submitting it. Once you have placed your order, we will provide you with a web order number.

Within a few minutes after we receive your order, we’ll email you an order confirmation. As with the web order number, the order confirmation email does not signify our acceptance of your order; we are simply confirming that we received your order. Once we have processed your order and prepared it for shipping, we will send you an email stating that we have accepted your order, which will include the shipment details (the “Shipment Notification Email”). The decision to accept your order is in our sole discretion. Because we want to make sure that we have your product available, we won’t accept your order until we have prepared your product for shipping. In most cases, this will be within 24 hours for items that are in stock. For items that are not in stock, you will receive the Order Acceptance Email when the item becomes available and has been prepared for shipping, which in no event will be later than the “ships” timeframe presented to you at checkout. Once we have sent and you have received the Order Acceptance Email, Apple will have formed a contract with you (we will include the key terms of the contract in this acceptance email). All that remains at that point is for us to deliver the product(s) to you, which we will do straightaway so you can begin enjoying the amazing item(s) you purchased at the Apple Store.

Shipping & Delivery

The Apple Store offers standard and express delivery options. The standard delivery is free of charge for any order exceeding a certain amount. For orders below this amount or for express delivery, shipping fees will apply. Please visit http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/shipping_delivery for the current shipping rates and fees. Your order will be shipped once all products of your order are available for a bundle delivery. Orders will not be accepted and products will not be delivered to any address outside the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man.

Please review the Shipping & Delivery section of the Help page located at http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/shipping_delivery to learn more about how and when you will receive the products you purchased from the Apple Store. Please note that the actual delivery of your order can be impacted by many events beyond Apple’s control once it leaves our facilities. We will, however, notify you of any significant delays, and work with you to ensure a smooth delivery.

As Apple takes care of the dispatch of the products you purchase on the Apple Store, the risk of loss of, or damage to, product(s) shall pass to you when you, or a person designated by you, acquires physical possession of the product(s). Title in the product(s) shall pass to you when the product(s) is picked up by the carrier from our warehouse. At this point, you will receive the Shipment Notification Email. If there are any issues with delivery, please contact Apple to resolve.

Pickup Points

Apple offers pickup points from convenient locations for many of the items available on the Online Store. Certain products, however, may not qualify for collection at pickup points. Only you or the person designated by you may pick up the item(s) purchased. A form of identity and order number will be required for collection by you. Or, you may designate a third party to pick up your order. You must provide the name and email address of the third party and the third party will need to bring a form of identity and order number for collection. Apple is not responsible for actions taken by the third party once your item(s) have been picked up. Apple will notify you when your order is ready and the date by which you need to pick up your items. Apple will also send you a reminder or two, just in case it slips your mind. If you don’t pick up your order, Apple may cancel it. Items purchased on the Online Store for Business or the Online Store for Education and items purchased with loan financing may not be collected from pickup points. Please visit http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/shipping_delivery for complete details about pickup points.

The Apple One-Year Limited Warranty does not apply to products that are not Apple-branded, even if packaged or sold with Apple products. Non-Apple-branded products may have the benefit of a manufacturer’s warranty provided by the product manufacturer — please see your product box and literature for details.

Consumer Law Rights

The Apple One-Year Limited Warranty or, in the case of products that are not Apple-branded, the product manufacturer’s warranty (as appropriate) are separate from and in addition to consumer rights provided under UK consumer law. For details, click here.

If you do plan to export an Apple product to another country or region, you must obtain any legally required export licences (or other government approvals) prior to doing so.

Product Availability and Limitations

Given the popularity and/or supply constraints of some of our products, Apple may have to limit the number of products available for purchase. Trust us, we’re building them as fast as we can. Apple reserves the right to change quantities available for purchase at any time, even after you place an order, provided Apple has not yet accepted your order.

Payments

If you are paying by credit card, when you submit your order, we may block up to the total amount of the order on your credit card. If we do not receive authorisation from your credit card issuer, we will inform you so that you can provide us with another payment method. Your credit card will be charged once we accept your order.

We reserve the right to verify the identity of the card holder. To ensure that your credit or debit card is not being used without your consent, we will validate name, address and other personal information supplied by you during the order process against information held by the card issuer and integrator. By accepting these terms and conditions, you consent to such checks being made.

Further information on payment can be found in the Payment & Pricing section of the Help page located at http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/payments.

To return a product to the Apple Online Store or cancel a service contract, please send your intent to return or cancel to us anytime prior to the date 14 days after the date you, or a person indicated by you, acquired physical possession of the product(s), or from the date of conclusion of the service contract. If you ordered multiple products in the same order, please send your intent to return to us anytime prior to the date 14 days after the date you, or a person indicated by you, acquired physical possession of the last product in the order. To exercise these rights, you need only provide us with a clear expression of your intent to return a product or cancel an order or service contract. You can notify us by either sending the model form found at the end of this Policy, submitting the electronic form found online at http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/account/home, calling our freephone number on 0800 048 0408 or sending an email to contactus.uk@euro.apple.com.

Once you notify us of your intent to return, simply return the product with the original receipt, original packaging and its included accessories to us. You have a further 14 days after indicating your intent to return or cancel a service contract to then return your products or arrange for their collection. Once we pick up the product or, in the event you are delivering the product to the carrier, we receive the product or proof that it has been shipped, we’ll provide you with a refund based on the original payment method within 14 days.

Please note that you may not return the following, except in case of defect or lack of conformity:

  • Electronic software downloads when download has begun with your prior express consent and acknowledgement that you lose your right of withdrawal.
  • Subscriptions to the Software Up-to-Date Programme, iTunes Gift Cards, Apple Store Gift Cards and any Apple Developer products.
  • Services, like gift packaging, after the services have been fully performed if performance has begun with your prior express consent and acknowledgement that you lose your right of withdrawal once the services have been fully performed. If services have not been fully performed, and you have requested performance to begin within 14 days from the date of conclusion of the service contract, you will be charged an amount proportional to the services rendered until the time you have informed us of your intent to cancel the service contract.
  • Sealed computer software that was unsealed after delivery.

If the product is damaged, we may offset the amount of your refund by the diminished value of the product.

We will refund all costs paid by you associated with the product or service, except for any express delivery costs (when you have not selected standard delivery).

For complete details on how to return a product purchased at the Apple Online Store, please visit the Return & Refund section of the Help page located at http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/returns_refund.

Standard Returns to Apple Retail

If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may return the product with the original receipt, original packaging and its included accessories within fourteen (14) calendar days of picking up your product(s). Should you wish to return your products to an Apple Retail Store, this must be a Retail Store within the UK.

The following additional restrictions apply to these returns:

  • If the item is returned in the original box with included accessories, we will exchange it or offer a refund.
  • Opened software, memory and other media can be exchanged for the same item, but cannot be returned for a refund.
  • Custom-configured products, including personalised iPads, cannot be returned or exchanged.

If you are a consumer and have purchased faulty or mis-described products, you should return them as soon as possible after discovery of the fault or mis-description. You must also provide the original receipt or proof of purchase. If investigation reveals the products as sold were faulty or mis-described, Apple will replace or repair them or provide you with a full refund.

All refunds under this Policy will be made using the original payment method. Apple will transfer the money to your bank account within ten (10) business days of the return of the product.

Apple provides security features to enable you to protect your product in case of loss or theft. If these features have been activated and cannot be disabled by the person in possession of the phone, Apple may refuse the return or exchange.

Wireless Services

Some Apple products utilise wireless services that may incur extra costs and are governed by the terms of a separate agreement between you and your selected wireless service provider. For more information, contact your wireless service provider.

Pricing and Price Reductions/Corrections

Apple reserves the right to change prices for products displayed on the Apple Online Store at any time and to correct pricing errors that may inadvertently occur.

In addition to your right to cancel your order, return a product or cancel a service contract for any reason as explained above, should Apple reduce its price on any Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days from the date you receive your product, feel free to contact the Apple Online Store by freephone on 0800 048 0408 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit, you must contact Apple within 14 calendar days of the price change. Please note that this excludes limited-time price reductions, such as those that occur during special sales events.

Order, Order Acknowledgement and Order Acceptance

To place an order for products or services at the Apple Online Store, you can visit the store website at http://www.apple.com/uk or the Apple Store mobile app, and then simply add the products you wish to your shopping cart, check out (using your chosen payment method) with your Apple ID or as a guest customer, and choose for each of your items to either pick up from an Apple Retail Store on the same day, have your item(s) shipped to you, or have your item(s) shipped to an Apple Retail Store to be collected by you or a person designated by you, or a combination of these methods if you’re ordering several items. Alternatively, you can call the Apple Online Store freephone number on 0800 048 0408 Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-18:00 and an Apple Specialist will assist you through the entire order process, from product selection to payment method. Either way you choose to order, you will be given an opportunity to review your order prior to submitting it. Once you have placed your order, we will provide you with a web order number.

Within a few minutes after we receive your order, we’ll email you an order confirmation. As with the web order number, the order confirmation email does not signify our acceptance of your order; we are simply confirming that we received your order. For orders where we are shipping any of your items to you or to an Apple Retail Store, once we have processed your order and prepared it for shipping, we will send you an email stating that we have accepted your order, which will include the shipment details (the “Shipment Notification Email”). For orders where you are to pick up an item from an Apple Retail Store, we will send you an email or an SMS stating that we have accepted your order, which will include when your items will be available to pick up from your selected Apple Retail Store (the “Pick-Up Notification”). The decision to accept your order is in our sole discretion. Because we want to make sure that we have your product available, we won’t accept your order until we have prepared your product for shipping or confirmed that it is in stock at your selected Apple Retail Store. In most cases, this will be within 24 hours for items that are in stock and need to be shipped, or less for items already in stock and available to pick up at your selected Apple Retail Store.

Orders will not be accepted and products will not be delivered to any address outside the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man. Please review the Shipping & Delivery section of the Help page located at http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/shipping_delivery to learn more about how and when you will receive the products you purchased from the Apple Online Store.

Apple Store Pickup and Return

Apple offers in-store pickup for many of the items available on apple.com. Certain products and payment methods, however, may not qualify for in-store pickup. Certain products may also qualify for a Pickup Window that will allow your item(s) to be picked up during a specified time window. Only you or the person designated by you may pick up the item(s) purchased. A valid form of ID and order number will be required for pickup. Apple will notify you when your order is ready and the date by which you need to pick up your items. We’ll also send you a reminder or two, just in case it slips your mind. If you don’t pick up your order, Apple may cancel it. Please visit http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/help/shipping_delivery for complete details about in-store pickup.

Pickup Contact

If you select Apple Store Pickup, you may designate a third party to pick up your order. You must provide the name and email address of the third party. Please note that certain products and payment methods are not eligible for Apple Store Pickup by a third party. The third party will need to bring a form of identity and order number for Apple Store Pickup. Apple is not responsible for actions taken by the third party once your item(s) have been picked up.

Apple One-Year Limited Manufacturer Warranty

Apple Distribution International Ltd. provides a one-year limited manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for any new Apple-branded product (the “Apple One-Year Limited Warranty”). The applicable warranty terms and conditions can be reviewed at http://www.apple.com/uk/legal/warranty/ and are also contained in your Apple hardware box.

Apple Online Store Customer Service

If you experience any problem with your order or want to check the status of your order, please check http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/account/home or contact the Apple Online Store Customer Service by freephone on 0800 048 0408 from Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-18:00.

Export

This contract is subject to applicable export control laws. You may not export any product purchased from the Apple Online Store to another country if prohibited by export control laws. If you do plan to export an Apple product to another country, you must obtain any legally required export licences (or other government approvals) prior to doing so.
