Question: Q: Tethering XP Apple Mobile Ethernet Device Ethernet Error code 37

I’m running Windows XP Pro 32bit with Service Pack 3.
iPhone 4 16GB with iOS4.0.1
Can’t get tethering to work on this PC at all, in device manager under Network Adapters is this:

⚠ Apple Mobile Device Ethernet
— Properties says: Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

I’ve tried uninstalling and rebooting, i’ve tried uninstalling:
iTunes
QuickTime
Bonjour
Apple Mobile Device Support
Apple Software Updater
(basically all Apple software), then rebooted

reinstalled iTunes+Quicktime.
Put my iPhone back in USB and again the same driver status code.

If i try it on another computer (also Windows XP Pro 32bit SP3) it works fine, if I tried it on a Windows Pocket PC via Bluewooth, it works fine.

I just cannot get rid of this code 37. I’ve googled so much but unable to find a solution.
Can anyone help please!?

The problem around here is that the really expert users are mostly Mac people, so they have nothing to offer short of «get a Mac.» And of course, when I read posts like yours, I think «glad I have a Mac.» 🙂

Seriously, I’ve seen Error Code 37 on iPod forums, but, of course, not about tethering. I recall it has something to do with Firewalls and 3rd Party Firewall products. I think that it probably isn’t an Apple software issue, but something else.

By the way, there are over 2 million ghits for «error 37 iphone». Almost appears like there are 2 million causes! 🙂

well, after persisting with this issue, i’m posting back to say i’ve resolved the problem. however, the links provided didn’t actually help. thanks for trying though.

so how did i fix it? well i’m not entirely sure which action fixed it, but these are some of the steps i followed:

rebooted in safe mode
still showed error code 37 next to apple ethernet driver
i uninstalled it and scanned for new hardware, it installed the driver again, still error 37
uninstalled the driver again while still in safe mode
rebooted pc, leaving the iphone plugged in and switched on and in tethering mode
on reboot, the computer picked up and installed the driver again, this time it says «this device is working properly» and i get the blue tethering on the iphone’s status bar.

maybe it was uninstalling the driver in safe mode that did the trick, i’m not quite sure. but the main point is that i got it working, without having to resort to reformatting my pc.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you tell me how you resolved your problem?? I have the same Code 37 problem! Help please!

Sep 27, 2012 1:30 AM

I’d registered to thank acDCuk for sharing his solution to this problem.

I had a similar problem (ethernet driver with a yellow mark, code 39), and couldn’t get it to install properly.

After a lot of troubleshooting, I get to this thread. I noticed the hint about trying safe mode. I did reboot into safe mode (with network), deleted an reinstalled the driver, got error, upgraded the driver choosing «install from a list» and then «don’t search, I will choose my driver» (or something like that, I use Spanish Xp 🙂). There were two drivers to choose form, I upgraded to the first one (not the latest one), it installed without mark, then rebooted into normal XP, and tethering was working.

So one of the key points (maybe choosing another driver is not really necessary, only reinstalling, upgrading. ; now in «normal» XP I can upgrade to the latest driver without problem), seems to be using safe mode.

Hope this helps Rashi_Gaur and others solve his problems.

i dint understand anything you have suggested! 😝 you might wanna tell me how to do the safe mode and all of that STEP BY STEP! 😝

i tried it! the first one is the Apple one and the second shows the camera one! It intalls if i schoose the camera one but still isnt working with the apple software

Sep 30, 2012 12:14 AM

I’ll try to be more detailed.

Did you get to reboot into safe mode? Just in case, here are the instructions:

In essence, you should press F8 while Windows boots. Choose Safe Mode with Networking.

Then, you should install the ethernet driver. When you plug the iPhone into the computer and enable Tethering on it, the ethernet driver should be installed automatically if it is absent. If it is installed, you should delete it in «device manager» and then scan for new devices in «device manager» (right click in computer name; or just unplug and re-plug the iPhone).

Still in device manager, check if the «Apple Mobile Device Driver» appears under «Network Adapters». If it appears without a yellow mark, it may be working well (you’ll need to reboot into normal XP to check). If it has the yellow mark, «Update driver» from the context menu (right mouse button), choose «Update from a list» (second option), then «Don’t search, I’ll choose. » (last option) then one of the two versions available.

If the yellow mark disappears, reboot into normal XP, check device manager for the driver without the yellow mark and test if Tethering is working (it should if there is no yellow mark in the ethernet driver). If it does not work, or it didn’t disappeared in the first place, reboot again/keep being into safe mode and play around deleting, installing and upgrading the driver until you get rid of the yellow mark.

Hope this helps.

now when i am using the safe mode by computer intalls my iPod as a camera! :O and now the apple driver isn’t even there in device manager in SAFE MODE! I think i may have to visit the apple store cuz now this thing is just gettin on my nerves

Oct 1, 2012 7:03 AM

The same code appears. and i have an ipod not an iphone! i thought the same process will help me to repair my ipod im so sorry but do u have any pther solution. or should i straight away go to the apple store?

Oct 1, 2012 8:08 AM

You can’t share the internet connection of an iPod. If you’d read the thread with attention, you’d seen that you situation was not very similar to ours. I don’t even get when you get your «code 37» error (in the camera driver¿?)

Why do you want to share you iPod Touch Wifi connection with your computer? Don’t you have Wifi on your computer?

Or what you want to do is reverse tethering, using your computer connection to get Internet access for your iPod Touch?

You should try to search, read and understand before posting, and then explain your setup, objectives and actions when you request help.

iPhone Connecting to Internet Using Windows PC’s Network through USB Cable

Note that this was only tested on certain combinations like this (Windows 7 with iOS 8), this (Windows 7 with iOS 7), this and this (Windows 7 with iOS 9.3.2 (iphone 6s)). Windows 7 seems a possible Windows OS that can work. Recently, I tested it on Windows 8 and iOS 9. Unfortunately, it did not work. It seems iOS or Windows has changed its way configuring the network. So, if you are using newer OSes, an Ad-hoc wifi hotspot from your PC may be easier to set up to share the Internet connection of your PC to your iPhone.

It is common and straightforward to make PC to use iPhone’s GPRS, 3G or 4G Internet connection through the USB cable. Now during the spring festival in the country, I am facing the problem that I am wanting to make my iPhone use the PC’s Internet connection.

There is no router by hand and what I have is only the iPhone and USB cable. The PC is an old one with Windows XP installed.

Finally, I figured out a way to make iPhone connect to the Internet through the iPhone’s USB cable to the PC Internet connection.

How to share the Internet of PC to iPhone through USB Cable

The method here is tested on iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1.3 and Windows 7 / Windows XP.

Step 1, disable the adapter for Internet connection in Windows.

Step 2, connect the iPhone to the PC by a USB cable.

Step 3, in the iPhone “personal hotspot” settings, enable “USB only” Internet sharing.

A new adapter in Windows will appear (“Local Area Connection 2” here).

Step 4, in the property of the adapter for Internet in Windows, enable “Internet Connection Sharing”.

In the “Settings”, select the needed services.

Step 5, re-enable the adapter for Internet in Windows.

Now, visit the Who am I service in your iPhone and check whether your IP is from the Internet provider for your PC.

Why and how does this work

Following is just my guess since both Windows and iOS are closed systems. For easier to understand, I name the adapters as follows.

After Step 1, the Windows routing table is cleared. After Step 2 and Step 3, both tun0 and tun1 are created and the network packets are forwarded between each other.

Step 4 makes sure that network packets can be forwarded from tun1 to eth0 by Windows. Re-enabling eth0 in Step 5 set up the routing table as we needed.

The final path for the packet routing will be as follows.

i have checked same with iphone4s (ios 8.1), not working

What results do you get? Are there any error messages from Windows or iOS? My tests on iPhone6 with iOS 8.1 are okay.

Making it work is a little bit tricky. You will need to follow exactly the order of the steps here. Some times, you may need to try several times.

Hi Eric,
i have test several time but it’s now working. please view this image , so you’ll get idea exactly what missing.

Seems problems happen before or on step 3. You will need to make sure the Windows successfully connected/recognized your iPhone as a new adapter.

Do you have iTunes installed on your Windows. You may try to reauthorize your computer. A tutorial at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5442841 may help.

I have re-authorized my computer, but same problem.

em.. no idea what’s wrong now.. You may also check whether firewall on windows blocks the connection? whether the reverse normal path (use iPhone network for Windows) works?

Will this still work if my iPhone’s wifi chip is broken? It is unable to detect networks

I don’t know. Have a try 🙂

what if the ip addresses don’t match

thank you very much
i’m impressed 🙂

I have tried this with my iPhone 5 and Windows 7. Instead of my iPhone using my PC’s internet connection, my PC is using my iPhone connection. Any ideas?

The mechanism re-used is from iPhone to let PC use iPhone’s data network. The methods here “tricks” Windows and iPhone to use the reverse connection.

The method here should be followed exactly according to the steps. Otherwise, the trick likely fails and it works the normal way that PC uses iPhone’s data network.

I have tried several times with one of the 3 following results:

1. PC connects through iPhone like normal tether.
2. PC connects to internet on its own as normal. iPhone connects using cellular.
3. PC connects to internet on its own as normal. iPhone has no internet connection and shows up in Network … Center as “Unidentified Network”.

After my last attempt, the Sharing tab under Local Area Connection Property has disappeared. Any ideas how to get this tab back?

If you can take the screenshots as in the post and upload them to some where, I can take a look whether I have some clues on what’s wrong.

In case you need some help on this:

i also have the same issue. The tab sharing is missing

actually the tab is missing because there only 1 connection(network) . when u put 2 network, then the tab sharing is appear..

lats time i have did all the steps you have given us here ..
it was working and i have got the internet connection to my iphone 4s via the computer ,

Today i connected the iphone to the PC but it wasn’t working , i have also did the steps agian and still not working ,
i would be glad if you help me !

Minding restarting Windows and even iPhone?

This might sound a silly answer. But sometimes, it is the solution.

Please, I want to know if it would work on my faculty internet with a proxy ip address? Thank you

Just have a try if it doesn’t hurt 🙂

it didnt work so I guess it does’nt work or there’s a bypass which I don’t know.

Tried with the proxy and it didn’t work for me. But I want to know if my cellular data being on before I start the process should be a pre-requisite or should it be off? Thanks.

What kinds of proxy are you using?

The cellular data should be on so that you can have step 3.

I work in a university faculty so our internet has an http proxy that has to be put in the internet settings before it works. So that’s the type.

I am not able to get this screen – whether i have to do in mobile or in PC

Step 3, in the iPhone “personal hotspot” settings, enable “USB only” Internet sharing.

After connecting my mobile to system I am not able to see the step 4

Step 4, in the property of the adapter for Internet in Windows, enable “Internet Connection Sharing”.

I have insalled I tunes in the system & sorted out the above issues, but when I connect to phone My PC uses the mobile internet – what should I do

You may need to check and ensure “Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)” service is running.

Hi Samuel Eshun, so the proxy setting are put into “Internet setting” or somewhere similar? I am afraid the method here will not work for this situation. They work on different levels.

I want to know how to connect it using Windows XP? Because the methods you showed is using Windows 7. I cannot get to the network sharing parts on windows XP

I run it on Windows XP when I figured out this method. I tested on Windows 7 with iOS 8 when I wrote this post.

Didn’t work for me.
I used xp but after several attempts and following your exact steps my iphone did not want to use my computer’s internet. It instead only used my cellular data to access the internet. Oh and yes I did then try disabling cellular data to force it to use the internet sharing from my computer but it wouldn’t connect at all.
I also tried bridging the connections together but a error message popped up and I gave up. Somethig about tcp error
Oh and the internet sharing option only appears when there is another internet adapter connected and detected by your computer. That’s why it dissapears after you disconnect your iPhone.
I believe jailbreaking is the only way you could try to do this but I have yet to find a tweak that does it.

I’m out of the country and was hoping to do so while here in my dorm room with only a wired network available but it seems I can’t have cellular turned off which doesn’t work for me as I’m not wanting to pay roaming costs. Any other options?

hi…u explained everything well above in the instructions but i have big doubt…as u said in SETP 3
“Step 3, in the iPhone “personal hotspot” settings, enable “USB only” Internet sharing.”

if we have to turn on the “USB only setting” that means we have to enable the 2G/3G (mobile data) must right? without enabling the 2G/3G (mobile data) we cant access that setting…once if we on mobile data then internet (mobile data) will take from iPhone only right? then how above trick will work??

but you mentioned about the above trick you are using internet from PC to iPhone (not mobile data) is that possible??

please confirm and correct me if i am wrong…i want to use my PC internet in my iPhone 4S (not mobile data) through USB cable.

You need mobile data to “activate” the network flow. Please note that it is only tested working on specific versions of iOS as stated at the beginning of the post.

can we share internet from windows 8.1 to i phone 4s?
Please reply me ..

I am not sure. You can have a try. There are limited number of combinations that work following this tutorials. Please share with us if it works for you.

I can’t open personal hotsopt in ios 9.2 without enabling cellular data. Please advice something ….

its work for 3 or 4 connect and then stop working …. please help

You are lucky having it working for you! Could you share with us your versions of iOS and Windows?

From my previous experience, you may restart iOS and try again. It may work again for you.

Actually I am using ios 7 with windows 7 on pc… I surprised to stop working I dont know why? and I tried to restart my iPhone and rest my network settings still not working …

If it ever worked for you. You may try to restart both you iPhone and Windows, then follow exactly the steps in this tutorial. It might work again.

sir i just clear the step in that system shows Network Shared.
Please tell the next step, what should i do to start internet in my iphone.

Sir,thank you very much, it worked Windows 7 with iOS 9.3.2 (iphone 6s),but can’t worked to ipad mini2.

Great to know it works for you! You know, it is hard to make this work. The solution is picky in the combinations of Windows and iOS and device. Thanks for your sharing!

Sir, why is the sharing tab instead says windows- -i forgot is corrupted. I tried system restore and it still hasn’t worked. Any tips on how to fix this?

Thank you for the tutorial. Unfortunately, as soon as I shut off cellular data my personal hotspot shuts off. The same thing happens if I switch to airplane mode. Is there a workaround to this? I am using Windows 7 and IOs 9.3.2 on an iPhone5. If I don’t shut off the cellular data, my phone connect to the internet through cellular.

What if I want it to be the other way around? I want to connect my windows pc to my iPhone’s data .. is this possible?

In many cases, yes. On my phone, in settings I turn on personal hotspot and then use a USB cable, WiFi or Bluetooth to connect the PC to the internet using my cell phone’s data plan.

But I’m using a desktop .. will it work?

I have followed the same steps. the newtwork is shared in my PC but how can I understand, that I am using the PC internet in my iPhone 6s becuase the 3G is also ON and Hotspot is connect with my PC. If I turn off my cercular data, the hotspot will disconnect otherwise I cannot use the PC internet.

was able to setup the connection successfully but it took all the internet bundle on my phone. i thought it will share my Pc internet with my iphone and not otherwise.

how do we know if desktop is using mobile data or otherwise?
the IP address in both desktop and mobile is coming diferent
it is saying personal hotspot : 1 connection

i followed exactly same steps and I was able to connect but not sure which is geting whose connection, windows 7 professional to ios 10.1.1

hi , i have tried but in the Network connections is showing , Netwotk cable unpplugged for the Local Area Connection2 , that is the Apple Mobile Device Ethernet.

Any ideas how to solve it?

I did, but it says..your iphone internet is connection is being shared over usb.

hello it worked on my iphone but some applications are not working thank you alot .

Can you help me to do something like this on Windows 10? I’ve come this far http://screenshot.sh/n8P2FVHG0ADCv
It’s in Polish, though I think you recognize “services” tab on the top. Services have only these numbers in their names, I don’t know what they mean

Aw, and im using iPhone SE with iOS 10.3.3 if it’s somehow important

Thanks a mmmilllion for this post. The rest you may find on internet including Mac help has been absolute crap, but this saved my afternoon.

..one thing – you have Skype listed in Services, but I don’t and Skype says it can’t connect. I tried to add it, but I must have done it incompletely as it is still not working. Can you please give me a clue of right way of adding it?….

Hello
First of all thanks for the post it worked for me I do not understand how it works but it did work for me 4 times on windows 7 and 10 and iOS 11.3.
However after these attempts I never got it working again windows just says Unidentified network after I enable network sharing of my other network card I really would like to get it to work again can you help me?
Thanks in advance

It is a surprise for me to know it worked for you with iOS 11.3. I originally got this method from iOS 8 + Windows 7. Thanks for sharing this info.

The advises I can possible give to try:
– stick with Windows 7. It was successful for iOS 8 and iOS 9.
– do a clean reboot of Windows first (and iOS too) before trying again.

Good luck and hope you can share your good news further.

Thanks a mmmilllion for this post. The rest I could find on internet including Mac help has been absolute no-help, but this saved my afternoon.

..one thing – you have Skype listed in Services, but I don’t and Skype says it can’t connect. I tried to add it, but I must have done it incompletely as it is still not working. Can you please give me a clue of right way of adding it into the “Services”?….

Thank you very much in advance!….

It seems you have made iOS connect to Internet through a Windows PC? That sounds great.

The “Skype listed in Services” must be because the Windows 7 node I used had Skype installed.

I am not sure whether it can fix the problem that you can’t use Skype (in iOS I guess), you may try:
– disable Firewall on Windows totally to verify
– install Skype on the Windows machine (it may configure the firewalls so that the network traffic are allowed; I am not sure. But worth try. I didn’t remember whether I can use Skype on iOS by then I wrote this post)
– manually allow those ports used by Skype. Ref to https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA148/which-ports-need-to-be-open-to-use-skype-for-windows-desktop for the ports needed.

Many thanks for your reply! In fact no, I connected Windows machine to 3G internet through wired iPhone6 following instructions above. And Skype is installed on that Windows machine, but it’s TCP/UDP does not appear on the Sharing->Services list. I believe that is the problem why Skype can’t connect, but I dunno how to set TCP/UDP correctly…

Folks, Here is a straight-forward though frustratingly cumbersome way to connect a PC to the Internet using an Iphone. It works ALL the time, but you must execute EVERY step, even toggling things that are already set correctly, since the process of toggling appears to clean out ROM settings…
