How to pay using Apple Pay in stores and other places

With your iPhone or Apple Watch, you can use Apple Pay in stores, restaurants, gas stations, taxis, or wherever else you see one of these symbols 1 .

Pay with your iPhone

  1. To use your default payment card:
    • If your iPhone has Face ID, double-click the side button. Authenticate with Face ID or enter your passcode.
    • If your iPhone has Touch ID, rest your finger on the Touch ID sensor.
  2. To use a different card, tap your default card to see your other cards. Tap a new card and authenticate.
  3. Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader until you see Done and a checkmark on the display.

Pay with your Apple Watch

  1. Double-click the side button.
  2. Your default card opens automatically. Scroll down to choose another card.
  3. Hold the display of your Apple Watch near the contactless reader until you feel a gentle tap and hear a beep.

How to pay using Apple Pay online or within apps

You can use Apple Pay to pay online in Safari 2,3 or within apps when you see Apple Pay as a payment option.

  1. Tap the Apple Pay button or choose Apple Pay as your payment method.
  2. To pay with a different card, tap the Next button or the Expand Menu button next to your default card.
  3. If necessary, enter your billing, shipping, and contact information. Apple Pay stores that information, so you won’t need to enter it again.
  4. Confirm the payment.
    • iPhone or iPad with Face ID: Double-click the side button, then use Face ID or your passcode.
    • iPhone or iPad without Face ID: Use Touch ID or your passcode.
    • Apple Watch: Double-click the side button.
    • Mac with Touch ID: Follow the prompts on the Touch Bar and place your finger on Touch ID. If Touch ID is off, tap the Apple Pay icon on the Touch Bar and follow the prompts on the screen.
    • Mac without Touch ID: Confirm the payment on your Bluetooth-connected iPhone or Apple Watch. Make sure that you’re signed in with the same Apple ID on all devices.
  5. When your payment is successful, you’ll see Done and a checkmark on the screen.

  1. In addition to accepting Apple Pay, the merchant must accept your payment card and payment network.
  2. In China mainland, you can use Apple Pay on the web in Safari only on a compatible iPhone and iPad with the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  3. In Italy, you can use your iPhone and Apple Watch to make Apple Pay purchases in stores with your Maestro card. Maestro cards can’t be used within apps and on the web. In the Netherlands, you can add Maestro cards to all compatible devices except Mac.

How to Reset PRAM on a Mac

Resetting your PRAM (or NVRAM) is a common troubleshooting technique when a Mac is misbehaving. We’ll cover how to reset PRAM on any Mac, as well as providing some additional information about PRAM and what it is to better help you understand when and why you’d want to reset it.

Resetting the PRAM / NVRAM on Mac

You reset the PRAM / NVRAM by doing the following:

  • Reboot a Mac and then immediately hold down the Command+Option+P+R keys

You will then hear the Mac reboot sound again, signifying that the Macs PRAM or NVRAM has been reset successfully.

You must hit the key combination before the grey screen appears otherwise it won’t work, you may need to try it once or twice until you get the timing right during restart, but once it works you can let the Mac system start as usual.

This works to reset the PRAM and NVRAM on every Mac hardware.

How do you know the PRAM / NVRAM is reset?

The PRAM has been reset only if you hear the Mac reboot sound a total of two times – once for the initial reboot and again when the PRAM has been reset (technically you can keep holding down the key combo and reboot the Mac over and over, but there is no practical reason to do so). You can then let your Mac boot up as usual.

Does resetting PRAM / NVRAM work on all Macs?

Yes, the command combination to rest PRAM has been the same for ages, and it works on all Macs, whether they are brand new MacBook Pro, Retina iMac, MacBook Air, Intel or PPC architecture, a MacBook, iMac, or a Mac Mini, or virtually any other Mac that has been made, the key command is the same and the effect is the same. The key sequence is the same, as is the process of pressing the sequence immediately on boot.

Apple Silicon Macs are an exception, however, as they apparently do not have NVRAM.

What is PRAM? What is NVRAM?

PRAM stands for Parameter RAM, and it holds assorted information about your Mac so that it functions to your specifications.

NVRAM stands for Non Volatile Random Access Memory, and it serves the same purpose as PRAM in that it stores information on a memory chip pertaining to various features.

In no particular order, here are some things stored in PRAM / NVRAM

  • Startup disk
  • Disk caches
  • RAM disks
  • Virtual Memory (commonly called swap)
  • 32-bit addressing
  • Video and display information including monitor depth, refresh rate, screen resolution, and number of colors
  • Volume for both system startup and speaker
  • Time zone information
  • Mouse and trackpad scaling and speed information (commonly called mouse acceleration)
  • Keyboard repeat rate
  • Kernel Panic information
  • DVD region settings
  • Default system fonts

When you reset the PRAM / NVRAM this information gets cleared out of the Mac. Because of the information stored in PRAM, if you reset the PRAM you’ll often have to readjust things like your mouse tracking speed, time zone (if it’s not set to an online server), and any non-native resolution that any attached display is running.

NVRAM and PRAM are basically the same thing and serve the same purpose, many users continue to refer to NVRAM as PRAM and vice versa, since their function is the same and resetting the memory is the same, it doesn’t really matter much.

When do you want to reset PRAM / NVRAM?

You generally only reset PRAM when troubleshooting something that is directly related to the above listed contents of the parameter RAM, outside of resolving problems or adjusting hardware changes there isn’t much other use for doing so. This can include troubleshooting everything from unusual issues encountered on system boot, to peculiar behavior and performance, to improper screen resolutions, amongst other things.

Do note that resetting PRAM / NVRAM is different than resetting SMC, but both can be effective tools when troubleshooting a Mac to resolve a variety of potential issues.

Question: Q: Mac OS X: What’s Stored in PRAM?

Hi all, I was reading some answers to some questions and come across SMC reset and PRAM reset, I wanted to know what each one does and how to know if I need to do it, the answer came from archived and told me the contents of PRAM but for a macbook pro, if I was running osx then it’s different, so, I know you is a clued up bunch init, can you advise. Usually, they’re troubleshooting steps taken if something’s not acting properly. So, if your system’s running fine, don’t worry about it. If your fans are running on full blast always, or your system isn’t detecting another device, an SMC reset may be needed. If your computer doesn’t remember the default boot drive or is having issues with the resolution, an NVRAM reset may be needed. If everything’s going well, don’t fix what isn’t broke. 😉

Question: Q: Battery, Pram or WHAT.

Ok guys. Even I,yes even I need help too. I dont claim to know it all but this one is stumping me with all my knowledge and all the research thru other threads.

OK I was on vacation with my iBook and a newly purchased battery (less than one month old). Did everything when I got the battery. Reset the pram, then performed a battery calibrate as per Apple several times. Battery worked Great. Got about 4 hours of DVD time on it. NO problems till my vacation.
For some reason while on vacation last week, my wife closed the iBook after pausing a DVD, then tried to wake it back up after a couple of hours. Got the spinning rainbow wheel, so she reset the Pram button while powered up, battery in and plugged in.
Now I can only get about 2% battery charge before it indicates full charge. I performed about 20 pram resets and got the battery back to around 25% then ran the battery down hoping to try to calibrateit again -Nothing. Still wont charge up any further than 2%.
I do have a 1yr warranty on the battery, but I have a hard time believing it is the battery when it worked fine on the plane, in the airport and everthing before the pram reset.

This is dumb founding me. I do still have my old battery which would only give me about 15 min watching a DVD. I will try that too and post back.

Independent Repair Provider Program

The Independent Repair Provider program is designed for companies interested in offering out-of-warranty repair service for iPhone and Mac. Qualifying companies can gain access to Apple genuine parts, tools, training, service guides, diagnostics and resources to perform a variety of out-of-warranty repairs for iPhone and Mac, such as iPhone display and battery replacements, and Mac logic board and video card replacements.

Who can apply?

Companies interested in performing out-of-warranty iPhone or Mac repairs directly to end users may apply. Apple will not consider applicants that use Apple trademark terms as part of any company name or web pages unless such use complies with the Apple Trademark Terms.

Parts resellers and distributors are not eligible for this program. Authorized Apple Resellers are not eligible for this program but may apply to the Apple Authorized Service Provider program.

What are the requirements?

Business and operational requirements

Companies applying are required to be an established business, with business verification documents available for review by Apple. Apple’s repair tools, training, service guides, and diagnostics must be kept confidential.

Premises

Eligible companies must maintain a commercial walk-in service location in an easily accessible location. A residential address is not acceptable as a service location.

Technician Certification

Participating service companies using Apple genuine parts are required to have Apple-certified technicians perform the repairs.

Becoming certified to repair Apple products requires passing exams through an online Authorized Testing Center. Certifications are updated on a per product basis annually. The certification exam fees are waived for businesses that have been approved to be an Independent Repair Provider.

We are currently accepting applications from businesses in the United States. Please submit an email with a completed Independent Repair Provider Notification of Interest form to IRP_Applicant_US_CAN@apple.com.
