It no longer is!

Apple withdrew it with the introduction of Lion.

Front Row was a media center software application for Apple’s Macintosh computers and Apple TVfor navigating and viewing video, photos, podcasts, and music from a computer, optical disc, or the Internet through a 10-foot user interface (similar to Windows Media Center and Boxee). The software relied on iTunes and iPhoto and wascontrolled by an Apple Remote or the keyboard function keys. The first version was released October 2005, with two major revisions since. Front Row was removed and discontinued in Mac OS X 10.7.

Even worse, Apple decided not only to withdraw Front Row, but also the IR (infrared) support on «new» Apple computers.

A media center with a «10-foot user interface» is the very great idea to give users a central point / control for accessing all their media (and additional media like movie trailers and other internet content) within one application. And the IR was the idea to remote control this access, for example if you are sitting on your coach.

Unfortunately Apple decided to replace Front Row by AppleTV, and remote control by an app for iOS devices (iPhone). Even knowing very well that there are other media centers and applications (like iTunes) which support the remote control.

Fortunately there are other devices to remote control your media (center): for example a Bluetooth trackpad. Not the same, but.

I took a survey today that said something along the lines of «Your Mac Pro came with Front Row, do you use this feature?» then had options for «Yes» or «No.» I was surprised because I didn’t think Front Row was installed. I ran it through Spotlight just to be sure and found the installer package (FrontRow.pkg). It struck me as odd that it wasn’t installed if it was there. Anyway, I tried installing—no dice. The installer gave me a message saying that Front Row is not compatible with my computer. Why not, I wonder? Because I can’t use the standard Apple remote (which is itself another «Why Not?»)? That kinda skews the survey, I think. I would use it if it were available.

FrontRow does work, just easier if you have a mac mouse plugged in via USB for it to work and you must do some finangling with a plist file to get it to function properly.

This DOES work. I use the Mac Pro’s second DVI out to the HDMI input on my Front Projection setup in my Home Theater just fine.

I will say the Wii remotes work too. I did it with Remote Buddy — but the Bluetooth sees it as a device just fine.

Been looking myself for a front row workaround. will check Tiger’s hint later.

I assume that FrontRow is on the install DVD because it’s easier to send out basically the same software setups to iMacs as MacPros.

Nope, at least not technically there is also a footnote that it requires the Front Row remote on the specs.
Whether separating it from the software is feasible I hesitate to say, because I don’t know the legal implications of doing that. If it is legal where you are at (call AppleCare to be certain), you can extract it with http://www.charlessoft.com/ ‘s Pacifist and put it in the Applications folder.

Note you may have to get a remote such as Keyspan’s remote to control it by remote control.

offers a software called MediaCentral which offers much of the same capabilities of Front Row without having to jump through as many hoops to try to make it work.

I’m not quite sure what a brody is talking about. Front Row was installed on my G5 iMac by default by the Leopard retail installer (in Applications, just as one would expect).

The G5 iMac has no IR sensor so even if I bought an Apple Remote (available as a replacement item from any Apple retailer) it would not work with this iMac. However, Front Row works perfectly well using the keyboard Shortcuts for Front Row as a substitute for the remote.

I haven’t tried it, but it should also work with any wireless keyboard or anything else that can emulate a keyboard on the USB bus, like the Keyspan remotes. Another remote alternative is Salling Clicker for Mac, along with a supported phone or PDA.

Really? That’s interesting. Specs say:

«Front Row requires a Mac with built-in IR and an Apple Remote»

I would try it out and see if you can navigate with the keys at least. I don’t have a remoteless Mac right now I wish to try it on. My iMac G5 having the fan issue, and I not having the time to rush off to the store and get it fixed a third time.

I assure you that the keyboard shortcuts work perfectly with an iMac G5 (ALS) model & the standard Apple keyboard that comes with it. This model does not have a built-in IR port, yet the Leopard installer did in fact install the application without my doing anything special.

I was astonished today when I was trying to crop something in Preview (I STILL can’t figure out how to constrain a crop), decided it wasn’t working and instinctively hit Command-Esc to eliminate the crop, and. «Good heavens! What in the world is this. «

There before my wondering eyes was a screen that announced itself as being Front Row. I discovered I could navigate around and play things, do stuff, using arrow keys, the Return key, and the Spacebar. I played some movies in iTunes (some that do play there didn’t in Front Row), some music, navigated to my Movies folder and played some things that aren’t in the iTunes Movies section, looked at some pictures, and so on. AFAIK my MacPro has no reason to have Front Row. But it does. All I did was install Leopard.

I suspect that Front Row is installed by default & that no checking is done for an IR port. If anyone has installed Leopard & finds that Front Row is not in their Applications folder, please post that info to this thread, along with the Mac model.

I also suspect that as more people without IR equipped Macs discover the app works, interest in alternative forms of remote control will increase. Keyspan seems to have quietly introduced an RF-based remote specifically for Front Row a few months before Leopard’s release, but I don’t know if it is Leopard-compatible. If someone has one, it would be nice to know if it is.

Someone should also be able to offer a USB-based, stand alone IR receiver for Apple’s Remote, a Bluetooth based system, or any of several other wireless systems that could control it. My only disappointment is that Front Row doesn’t support AppleScript — if it did, all sorts of DIY options would be possible . including voice-activated control!

Thanks for the clarification R C-R.

Maybe by mid-January my iMac G5 can be fixed to be fan playing free, that I can turn it into a second multimedia center. I won’t have free time on the weekends till then to bring it over to the Apple Store.

Question: Q: How do I use Front Row?

I searched google and tried looking for instructions on my computer for it but can not find any information on this. Basically how in the world do I use Front Row (I know how to get to it).

1)I have no idea how to make Front Row pick up music / movies stored in my computer since I can not find a setting for directories

2)How do I stream music on other iTunes on the same network?

3)What is the difference between this and iTunes

Front Row is a kind of one-stop-shop to browse/display/present the media stored on your Mac. There are very few settings or preferences used in Front Row. As long as you have some songs saved in iTunes, you should be able to quickly browse through them using Front Row. As long as you have pictures in iPhoto, Front Row should let you browse through them. Any movie files living inside your user’s «Movies» folder or saved inside iTunes should also be available. If you want to access music from another Mac on the network (that has iTunes music sharing turned on), you should be able to change the «Sources» in main Front Row menu.

Is the information in your profile correct? «G5 Mac OS X 10.4.2»? I don’t think you’ll be able to use Front Row with that hardware & software. Do you have an iMac G5 with a built-in iSight? If so, you can use Front Row, but you probably should run the Software Update to make sure your Mac OS X, iTunes and iPhoto are all up-to-date before they’ll work correctly together. What other computers are you trying to share your music, pictures or movies from? What kind of network do you have? All of the computers will have to be on the same network and subnet for them to share. Most of the settings will have to be configured in iTunes or iPhoto for the sharing to work.
