What is hdcp apple tv

Question: Q: Error message on Apple TV: «HDMI cable or connection doesn’t support HDCP»

I recently upgraded from an Apple TV Gen 4 to an Apple TV 4K (I have a 4K TV, so thought it’d be nice to utilise my premium Netflix subscription).

Same HDMI cables, same TV, different Apple TV. I’m getting the following message when it comes to watching anything on Netflix — not just 4K — even previews while scrolling through the available titles:

«This video can’t be played. It looks like your HDMI cable or connection doesn’t support HDCP, which is required to play this type of video. Try reconnecting the HDMI cable from Apple TV to your TV and play this video again».

What I’ve tried so far, with only temporary success:

— Reboot Apple TV

— Unplug and replug HDMI cable

— Use different HDMI cables

— Purchase new HDMI cable that allow larger data transfer (21 Gbps)

— Try different HDMI input on TV

— Update TV’s software

— «Reset and Update» Apple TV

— Tried various formats at «Video and Audio» Apple TV settings, even «1080p SDR» but I have no issues (flickering screen etc) with «4K SDR 60Hz». Still, no Netflix though no matter which one I’ve chosen.

Something fishy: Every time I’ve tried «Check Cable» at «Video and Audio» Apple TV settings, with any HDMI cable (expensive Monster included) and at any HDMI TV input, it takes me to the:

«Now, check your screen, If you see a clear picture, select OK. Select Cancel if you see sparkles, static or other display problems.»

The picture is clear, but it won’t let me select the «OK». I’ve tried the normal remote, the Apple TV app and my universal Logitech remote control.

It then takes me to the: «There’s a problem with your HDMI cable. Older cables might not be compatible with your system. Long or poorly shielded cables may also cause problems.» and it just stays there — it won’t allow me to select «OK» and move on. Only solution is either rebooting the Apple TV or pressing over 30 times the Menu or Home button on the remote. I can then see the main menu on the background, and the «OK» button suddenly becomes responsive again.

Question: Q: HDCP 2.2 and the Apple TV 4K

I want to get the new Apple TV 4K in the coming weeks, but I probably won’t be upgrading my Pioneer receiver to a 4K model until the Boxing Day sales.

So my question is this. does the new Apple TV 4K utilize HDCP 2.2 encryption for iTunes Season Passes and Netflix?

My current receiver only supports HDCP 1.4 and I’m wondering if I’m going to be unable to watch anything until I upgrade the receiver.

Helpful answers

The encryption is in the content, not the hardware.

As all 4k content uses 2.2, I assume that from iTunes will too.

Is there any reason you can’t bi-pass your receiver for video?

I would assume so, I don’t have the equipment to test my answer though.

Only that I like my receiver being the ‘boss’ of all my stuff 🙂

Seriously though. does the Apple TV 4K have separate audio output so I could send video to the TV and audio to the receiver? That would be a suitable workaround until Boxing Day sales.

No, it has the same ports as its predecessor, but you can bypass the receiver by routing HDMI to the TV and audio only from the TV to the receiver.

Sep 14, 2017 7:20 AM

Your previous reply solved my problem, but if you don’t mind I have a follow-up question.

Since encryption is content not hardware, is the HDCP 2.2 encryption only going to be an issue for 4K content? Meaning. if my already purchased iTunes Season Pass shows are 1080p, will they still play on my current receiver?

So after playing around with my Apple TV 4K and a Denon revceiver that doesn’t support HDCP 2.2 somehow 4K content is in fact passing through the unsupported receiver to a supported TV with no issue. I am having a hard time figuring out why but if it’s working I probably should not question it!

As for HDR though that seems to be a hot mess from my experience so far. (Weird gradients even when direct to TV and menus on Apple TV seems WAY dim on HDR 4:2:2 and 4:2:0).

Sep 26, 2017 4:38 PM

I have the same experience. I wonder if there is something we’re missing. I’m able to send 4K SDR 60hz 4:2:0 to my marantz and jvc projector, neither of which support HDCP 2.2.

This article defines what HDCP is https://www.digitalconnection.com/faq/hdtv_12.asp, in short is says:

«HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection, a copy protection scheme to eliminate the possibility of intercepting digital data midstream between the source to the display. The format designed by Intel and licensed by Digital Content Protection, LLC using an authentication and key exchange procedure before video and audio is presented. Products compatible with the HDCP scheme such as DVD players, satellite and cable HDTV set-top-boxes, as well as few entertainment PCs requires a secure connection to a compliant display, the process often described as the handshake. Due to the increase in manufacturers employing HDCP in their equipment, it is highly recommended that any HDTV you purchase is compatible. Although most video devices support high-definition video over component output, analog connections are scheduled to phase out in the future or possibly forced to limited resolutions output. «

As far as doe all Apple TVs support it, current Apple TV’s which are the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K support HDCP.

Jun 2, 2019 11:17 AM

All current set top devices would be HDCP compliant, as well as many previous versions (like the 2nd/3rd gen Apple TV). It would more be a matter of your TV having support but any set purchased within the last 10 years or so would have it.

If you want to stream in 4K, however, you would not only need an Apple TV but also a 4K TV and it would it would need the next gen HDCP 2.2. You would also need a high speed HDMI cable with a data rate of 18GBPS

Question: Q: HDCP error on Apple TV

My AppleTV is giving an HDCP error and won’t play Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime or Peacock . This suddenly happened and no idea why.

I did a total factory reset on the AppleTV and reloaded up all apps and logged in again (takes ages), I also switched out the HDMI cable (new high speed HDMI) . still the same problem.

then I moved the appleTV to another room, connected to a TV with an older style HDMI cable, the AppleTV continues to have HDCP playback issues.

I can watch the purchased movies, and any apps in the “my channels” section.

Hey there Rodneyyouplonker,

We understand you are seeing an error about HDCP when trying to use certain apps. We’ll be happy to help.

You did great by testing a different cable and with a different TV. We recommend trying other HDMI ports just to make sure all options are exhausted.

We also recommend making sure your Apple TV is fully up-to-date. Use this guide: Update Apple TV software

Afterwards, go through the steps below.

1) Unplug the HDMI cable and firmly seat the cable on both ends.

2) Turn off the TV and receiver. Unplug the Apple TV from power, then plug it back in. Power on the TV and receiver.

3) In the TV menu, make sure HDMI is selected

4) Connect the Apple TV directly to the TV, if you’re using any kind of receiver or switch.

5) On your Apple TV, go to: Settings > Video and Audio and adjust the HDMI and display settings.

— If you have an Apple TV 4K, go to: Settings > Video & Audio > Check HDMI Connection > Check HDMI Connection

If the issue persists after these steps, we recommend reaching out to Apple directly. Use this link: Get Support

Thanks for all this info. I tried everything.

I even went to the «nuclear option» and factory reset BOTH my LG TV and AppleTV.

Having then spent an hour or more reinstalling the apps etc — I used a brand new HDMI cable and connected it to HDMI ports 1 & then 2 on the TV. Got the same problem.

Then found a 3rd HDMI port on the back of the TV, so tried this & it worked. BUT.

I was able to see the picture on Peacock TV and Disney+ movies, but as soon as I tried to use the AppleTV remote to control the volume on my TV, it asked to set up volume control (which failed) and then I was back to the same black screen (no picture) only sound. I have NO IDEA what to do next. I really don’t want to buy a new AppleTV. what are my options?

Feb 23, 2021 9:49 AM

Hey there Rodneyyouplonker,

Thanks for going through those steps and updating us on the progress. Since it stopped working when the volume control prompt appeared, we recommend double-checking the steps to set that up. View those here: Control your TV or receiver with your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote

However, beyond that, the best path forward would be to contact Apple, here: Get Support

After having done factory resets on both the AppleTV and my LG TV, the problem continued. So I purchased a new AppleTV and (of course) everything works perfectly. ugh. So Apple wins & I have to spend another $200 to fix an issue that isn’t my fault. How do I get Apple to fix the other AppleTV? That way at least I could use it in the future with another TV.

Question: Q: HDCP error in Apple TV

I have a Samsung Smart TV from 2014. No way it cannot work with Apple TV 4th generation!.

1. if I try to see a movie from the Netflix App -> it works perfect.

2. if I try to see a movie from the Apps Store -> it works perfect

3. If I mirror my MacBook Pro -> it works too.

The problem comes up when I try to play in the TV a movie I rented in iTunes. I mean, all what I did so far was to try and run the trailer of the films in iTunes and the screen becomes grey and I get the error message that the movie won’t pay in one of the connected displays». the trailer plays perfect on the MacBook Pro display, it just does not on the Apple TV.

Hi. Using mirroring or extend the desktop is a very second-rate way of AirPlaying video, since it uses software in the graphics chip to create a H.264 live video stream, and sends that to Apple TV. This means the video is compressed (again), reducing sharpness and possibly dropping fast action. The AirPlay icon (up arrow into small rectangle) should appear in the controls line at the bottom of the on-screen video player. When you tap it and select your Apple TV, the player should go dark and say «This video is playing on Apple TV». In this mode, the Apple TV connects directly to the video stream, cutting out the middleman. The two modes are described here Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV — Apple Support.

I understand you are receiving and HDCP alert only when playing a rented iTunes movie on your Apple TV. Here are the troubleshooting steps that I would recommend going through for this issue.

If you have video issues or see an HDCP alert

Get help with issues like blank or distorted screens, HDCP alerts, and color, tint, and brightness issues.

If you see issues like a blank, flickering, or static screen or an HDCP alert

  1. Unplug both ends of your HDMI cable. Then firmly plug them back in.
  2. Turn off your TV and receiver. Unplug your Apple TV from power, then plug it back in. Turn your TV and receiver back on.
  3. In your TV menu, make sure that you select the HDMI input that matches the HDMI port connected to your Apple TV. Check your TV manual for help.
  4. Connect your Apple TV directly to your TV instead of your receiver or HDMI switch, since the issue might be with your receiver or switch.
  5. Try a different HDMI cable to see if your cable causes the issue.
  6. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Audio and Video and adjust the HDMI and display settings. Can’t go to Settings because of a blank screen? Then use your remote instead:
    • For Apple TV (4th generation), hold Menu and Volume Down for 5 seconds. Then your Apple TV switches to a new resolution every 20 seconds. Select OK to choose a resolution or Cancel to quit.
    • For Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), hold Menu and Up for 5 seconds. Then your Apple TV switches to a new resolution every 20 seconds. Select OK to choose a resolution or Cancel to quit.

Please let us know if the issue persists, and thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

Hi. Please clarify. Are you using iTunes on the computer and trying to AirPlay the video to the Apple TV? If so, are you using mirroring or extending the desktop, or are you using the AirPlay icon in the iTunes video player to send the video direct to Apple TV. Or are you actually using the movies app on the Apple TV?

Jan 12, 2017 4:02 AM

Thank you. These were the first steps I did browsing the web for a solution.

2. Apple TV and TV turned off and on again (no receiver, connected directly to the TV)

3. It is easy to know that the HDMI is the correct one, otherwise you don’t see the Apple TV User interface

4. This is how I am trying to use it, with no receiver but directly to one of the 4 available HDMI inputs in my TV set

5. Tried a standard HDMI cable first, then bought the original expensive Apple brand, Still no results

6. Adjusted in the Apple TV menu, nothing changes.
