Ratings and Reviews

Neat App

I really appreciate the light and dark mode support and native experience of the app. Swiping between the articles is great. Works well on iPhone and iPad.

I kinda wish there were headers shown between days so I could easily see when I’ve advanced to the previous day’s content. I tend to open the app, scroll down to the bottom, then read up so I can read them in the order they were created. The Today section usually works well for this except I miss the content posted late the night before so I switch back and forth between that and All Unread which is a bit annoying.

Overall, would recommend! Definitely can’t beat the price ha

So Happy to be Using Again

NetNewsWire was an RSS pioneer. If I’m not mistaken, I paid for it years ago . . . and then other readers came along, were better, and I jumped ship. There are plenty of excellent readers out there, but this version of NNW is amazingly fast, simple to use, and minimalist. Over the years, apps became more sophisticated, adding so many features that ultimately just added complexity and bloat. While NNW is lacking in some areas, I just don’t need or want anything more that what NNW offers now. Polish, yes. Occasional UI improvements, sure. Added services, bring ‘me on. But, for the most part, NNW is fantastic as is and makes RSS reading a joy again. Thanks to the developer(s). Well done.

Good, but could be significantly better

I used to use NetNewsWire years ago and loved it, I was so disappointed when it went away. I was excited to hear NNW coming back and that it would be available on my current devices (iPad/iPhone). However, over the years have experienced many new ways to consume my news including Feedly and News+.

When NNW was released, I was hoping that it would significantly improve my news reading experience, as it did years ago. Unfortunately, NNW feels to be the same app/workflow as it was back then with little evolution other than being on my iDevice.

Adding features such as Category (folder) views, device feed sharing (iCloud Drive), newspaper style view, duplicate elimination/aggregation, recommended feeds, auto category forward, and auto-read would make NNW my go-to news reading solution. Until then it will have to remain a throwback novelty.

Hopefully, these suggestions will help NNW become better and eventually become THE best RSS Feed reader available, as it once was.

Thanks for the feature requests! I’m not sure what you mean by a few of them, though. Would you email me? brent@ranchero.com

An Otter RSS Reader 17+

An okay minimalistic RSS app

Screenshots

Description

«An Otter RSS Reader» is the world’s newest most okayest RSS reader with a high key adorable otter icon!

«This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! A simple RSS reader that syncs my subscribed feeds across my iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This developer is genius! I think he nailed it with this app»
— Josh Holtz

FEATURES
+ Subscribe to RSS Feeds that sync over iCloud
Fetches RSS feeds and refreshes in a background task or on a pull-to-refresh.

+ Auto Discover Feeds
Simply enter the domain of website (like anotterrss.com) and Otter will attempt to discover all RSS feed urls to choose from.

+ Group Feeds Into Folders
You know. because organization is important.

+ Read Articles In A Normal Web View
This isn’t anything special. This is why its the okayest and minimalist. Just read the article like how it was supposed to be read. Is it even a reader? It might just be a syncer.

+ Widgets
Add some gorgeous widgets to your Home Screen to show unread count for either all feeds or a specific folder of feeds.

+ Import/Export with OPML
Import your feeds with an OPML file (if you have one from your existing RSS reader). Export your feeds into an OPML file if you hate «An Otter RSS» and want to move to another app. We’ll understand. There are plenty of other apps out there and this one might not be the one for you!

What’s New

— Brand new feed and article views (it’s so pretty)
— New setting to try out beta feature of adjustable column layouts

Background app refresh

Can’t wait for automatic refresh to come to the app!

However, the background app refresh is not working. I had the same number of unread feeds from what I did twelve hours ago on launch. I pulled down and did a refresh and 30+ articles popped into my feeds. So it appears that is not working.

Developer Response ,

Hello! Auto refresh is coming is coming in version 1.1.1 later this week 🙂

Background refresh is scheduled by the OS. It will get refreshed at every 30 minutes at the minimum but could take longer. The more you use the app the bigger the priority those refreshes will come. iOS stuff 🤷‍♂️

And I wanted to have the same webview on Mac as iOS but there is a bug on Mac that didn’t allow me to use the same webview ☹️ Me and my wife also just had a baby so I couldn’t sink all of my time into fixing that the (yet). I do have plans to get some reader view working on Mac though!

Thank you so much for the kind review ❤️ I hope you keep enjoying your Otter experience!

Clean, simple to use, with integration and extras included

I haven’t dug too much, but the fact you have a debug area for people to clean if they want is, to me at least very appreciated. I have two questions, but before that. One suggestion. Instead of having to have a setting default to switching the state to read when clicked, or doing it after you leave the view, maybe a button at the bottom such can be added to give you options to have it read, even delete it (If it’s causing extra memory to be used that is, not sure how that works) if they no longer need it, but then have the extra options to move that certain post in case they will be using it again. Questions. Is it being implemented as a browser in the app that will have cookies and trackers latch on? Also, the serious one for now.. Why does it seem like every developer, or just I don’t even know.. What is going on with Twitter?? Hahaha. Thanks!

Not sure why it didn’t paragraph my text.. I surely did, also an issue. I subscribed to the Otter and the indiedev, when I came to type that first review, I went back to the app and the feeds were gone. Like they got consumed after they were already consumed, haha.

Better than okayest!

It does what it says on the tin: it reads RSS feeds. Other features are strictly in service of that core function. No accounts, no suggested or “curated ;)“ content. It doesn’t send me emails, or even ask for my email. This is what I’m after in an RSS reader.

But! It syncs to iCloud so I can read stuff across devices without thinking about it! It loads full articles without fussing with subscriptions and nonsense! It supports reader view! These things all serve to enhance the feed-reading experience without demanding your attention or getting in your way.

Two small features I’d like to see: an option to default to reader-view and swipe to mark as read. The app is great without those things, but I’d appreciate them.

Developer Response ,

Thank you so much for the kind review! The «default to reader view» was a bug in one of the versions 😔 That should be fixed now along with the addition of «swipe to mark as read». Happy Ottering!
