This classic stewed apples recipe requires just three key ingredients; apples, caster sugar and water.

Stewed apples are simply apples that have been softened in boiling water with caster sugar. Stewed apples covered in oats or a crumble topping is a delicious dessert, but they can also be used in plenty of other dishes as well. You could allow them to cool and add them to porridge or yogurt, as a breakfast topper, for example. We’ve kept this recipe very simple, but for extra flavor add a sprinkling of cinnamon. For added sweetness, swap the water for apple juice.

Ingredients

  • 500g apples, quartered, cored and peeled
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1tbsp water

Method

Slice the apples and place in a medium pan with the sugar and water. Cover the pan and put it on the hob over a medium heat. When it comes to the boil, put the timer on for 5 mins and leave to cook.

Give it a stir after about 4 mins, the apple slices will start to dissolve and become fluffy. Cook for a further 1-2 mins or until the apple is fluffy but a few chunks are still visible. Taste the mixture, adding more sugar if required.

Leave to cool then spoon into a bowl and refrigerate for up to 1 week.

Top tips for making stewed apples

Add a couple of whole cloves in step one, but remember to remove them before serving.

What apples are best to use for stewed apples?

It’s best to opt for an apple that is known for holding its shape and texture like Granny Smith apples. These apples do however have a much tangier, punchier flavor so if you’re looking for something a little more subtle, opt for Bramley as they will result in a softer, sweeter stewed apple mix.

Cooking apples can be used if you’re planning on using your stewed apples as an apple pie filling or apple crumble base.

Can I stew apples with the skin on?

If you want a chunkier, more textured apple filling opt for keeping the skin on. The skin is also packed full of health benefiting nutrients so it’s always worth keeping on for that factor.

For softer, looser stewed apples peel before cooking. Make sure you don’t overcook them. Taking the skin off will make the apple chunks become mushier quicker which could result in apple sauce or puree instead.

Learn how to make the best stewed apples with our simple recipe and top tips. Try this fruity favourite with your morning porridge or as part of a dessert.

Gently cooked apples make an easy comforting pudding simply served warm with a dollop of cream or ice cream, or as part of a wholesome breakfast served cold with yogurt and granola. To get a really soft texture use cooking apples such as Bramley while, for a chunkier result, it’s better to use seasonal eating apples – or you could try a mixture of both.

What are the main ingredients?

  • 500g apples, approx. 5 apples
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1 tbsp of water

How do you cook apples?

  1. Peel and core the apples and roughly chop into chunks.
  2. Heat a pan over a medium heat and place the apple pieces into the pan with the sugar and 1 tbsp water. Give it a little stir before covering the pan with a lid and cook for 3-4 mins. Stir gently then cover again and continue to cook gently until the apples are really soft. Cooking apples will really fall apart whereas eating apples will retain their shape.
  3. Taste the mixture and add more sugar if the apples are too sharp, or a dash of lemon juice if they are too sweet. Serve warm or leave to cool and store, covered in the fridge, for up to 5 days.

Can I improve the flavour?

If you prefer the apples with less or no sugar, just up the amount of water to 100ml, adding more if the mixture dries out during cooking. Sweeten to taste with sugar, honey, maple syrup or agave once the apples are soft. Spice up the basic compote recipe with storecupboard ingredients; try adding a pinch of cinnamon, mixed spice or ground ginger to bring out the flavour and natural sweetness in the fruit.

Stewed apples are, of course, a key component to many a sweet treat, but the caramel, slightly tart quality is also a great complement to pork dishes from a Sunday roast to sausage and mash.

Use your stewed apples to enhance the chewy texture and earthy, oaty sweetness of this traybake. It makes a great seasonal pick-me-up with your cup of tea for when the days get chillier.

Apple, pear & cherry compote

Mix cooked apples, pears, and sour cherries to make a super easy and satisfying pudding. Serve the compote with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream for a pleasing contrast to the warm fruit.

Leave the sugar out of our original recipe and fold the gently cooked apple through mashed potato. Fabulous served with gently spiced Cumberland sausages and a simple onion gravy. Comfort food doesn’t get any better.

Easy stewed apple

Use up a glut of apples by stewing them with lemon, sugar and cinnamon for use in cooking. Or, serve with yogurt or your favourite bakes and desserts

Ingredients

  • 3 apples, peeled, cored and chopped (see tip)
  • 2-4 tbsp caster or light brown soft sugar (depending on the sweetness of the apples)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon

Method

Put the apples, sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 5-10 mins, or until the apples are tender when pierced with the tip of a knife.

If you prefer a smoother mixture, continue to cook for a further 5 mins, uncovered, stirring frequently to break down the apples into a compote.

Recipe tip

Use a mix of cooking and eating apples for a variety of textures and a more rounded flavour. Cook any cooking apples for 5 mins, then stir in the eating apples and cook for another 5 mins for a chunky texture.

Now I’m bringing back those stewed apples NS style! I promise this is one of the easiest recipes you’ll make. All you need is 3-4 fresh apples of your choice. I find that gala, fuji, and honey crisp are my favorites to stew, but the beauty is in using whatever you have on hand, what’s seasonal to your region, and what tastes good to you.

Serves 4 servings

Ingredients

4 large apples, cored, peeled, and chopped

1-inch nob of fresh ginger, peeled

2 whole cinnamon sticks

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

3 cups apple cider

Directions

In a small saucepan on low-medium heat add all ingredients and gently simmer for 5-8 minutes with the lid on.

Take off the lid and continue to cook for an additional 10 minutes or until the apples are tender to desired texture. Add more apple cider to thin out, as desired.

Serve warm. Store in an airtight glass container for up to 1 week.

To serve:

Eat plain as I did, pictured with almond butter!
Top yogurt
Top oatmeal or porridge
Top banana ice cream for dessert (so tasty and a great cold/warm combination)
