What has been (and is) Apple’s cheapest iPhone?
Currently there are many manufacturers that exceed 1,000 euros with their high-end smartphones, Apple not being an exception with devices such as their iPhone from the ‘Pro’ range. Now, this has not always been the case and in fact there are phones of the brand that have been much lower than these figures. We do here a small review of what have been the cheapest iPhone in history and the one that currently holds that honor.
The first was not the cheapest
It may or may not surprise you, but when the norm might have been for the original iPhone to be the most expensive, it really wasn’t. That first Apple smartphone was launched in 2007 at a price of $ 499 in its basic version with 4 GB of storage. We cannot compare it in euros, since it was not released in European countries.
The one that holds that record of having been the cheapest is the iPhone 3G , which came out at a starting price of $ 199 that also moved to 199 euros in Europe, since with this we did have launches to countries like Spain, even through telephone companies like Movistar. This price decrease was very appreciated, but despite looking like a ridiculous figure today, we must take into account the prices of mobile phones at that time and inflation .
Probably today you can still buy mobile phones for 199 euros, although low-end or at most mid-range, but very fair. But we already assure you that no iPhone, except old models in second-hand markets, costs that figure today. However, according to what was previously commented, that was already an expensive phone and it was rare to find mobile devices that had prices like this.
The arrival of smartphones in general and the iPhone in particular caused the telephony market to explode into the air and prices were increasing more and more to standardize in figures like the current ones. As a general rule and ignoring some exceptions, today phones of around 200 euros are low-end, with medium ranges of between 200 and 400 euros, high ranges of 500 to 800 euros and already the premium range of 900 euros in ahead.
Does Apple really keep raising prices?
If we look at what an iPhone costs today, we can see that you can buy one from 489 euros , as is the case with the 2nd generation iPhone SE. And although it is true that we find their TOP phones starting at 1,159 euros, it must be noted that Apple no longer launches a smartphone per year, but that it has launched 4 and even 5 as was the case in 2020.
Therefore, as you can see in the previous graph, an average iPhone is cheaper these days than a few years ago. The acquisition prices of these terminals were rising from 2007 to 2018, having a small decrease in 2016. From 2018 until today it has been going down and Apple is already adapting to different target with its phones, although it still does not offer medium or low range and for Hence the prices cannot be considered cheap either.

Best Cheap iPhones 2021
The new iPhone SE is the best cheap iPhone we’ve ever seen at launch. It has the processor of an iPhone 11 and the price tag of a phone that’s already been out for a few years. But if you want to get an even cheaper iPhone, you can always go with an older model. These are our picks for the best cheap iPhones heading into 2021.
Limited-time iPhone deals are going on all the time, check out the latest deals for iPhones here.
*Price can change depending upon the carrier that you purchase from.
iPhone SE (2020): Best iPhone under $400
The iPhone SE is the most inexpensive phone Apple has ever launched, and that’s a really great thing. The wild thing is that the iPhone SE has the same processor (A13 Bionic processor) that you would find the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max. In other words, the new iPhone SE performs just as well as the much more expensive iPhone 11 series and will likely support the device for a long time, which means you won’t need to buy another phone anytime soon. Apple cut corners on the camera quality keeping the old iPhone 8 lenses, but it’s a small price to pay to keep the price so low.
Check out the video below for more of our thoughts on the new iPhone SE.
What we don’t like
The iPhone SE is basically a Frankenstein—it has the body (and camera) of an iPhone 8, but the insides of an iPhone 11. Judging from outside appearances, the phone can look a little dated compared to the sleek iPhone 11 with its 6.5-inch display. As long as you value what’s under the hood more than the look of the phone itself, the iPhone SE offers awesome value.
What cell phone plans can I get with the iPhone SE?
You can get the iPhone SE with basically any cell phone provider you can name. Here are the five most popular cell phone plans that pair with the iPhone SE right now.
iPhone 7: Best iPhone under $300
What we like
The iPhone 7 is the oldest phone you can still get from the Apple store (though we don’t recommend buying it from Apple directly) and through major carriers. So basically, it’s the cheapest iPhone easily available if you purchase it through a wireless carrier. But still, the fact that Apple still carries this phone should give you some confidence that it’s still worth getting in 2020.
The iPhone 7 comes with the A10 Fusion processor chip, which for context, is still 120 times faster than the original iPhone device. You shouldn’t have much issue running current basic apps despite the phone being a few years old, barring super graphic-intensive apps like Fortnite, for example.
The iPhone 7 comes with a 12-megapixel camera, which actually is the same camera quality in the iPhone X.
What we don’t like
The iPhone 7 doesn’t have nearly as much battery life as you’ll find on newer iPhones, especially when you’re running newer apps. We estimate that your iPhone 7 battery will maybe last 10 hours on a full charge assuming you’re not gaming or streaming heavily. Our advice: keep a charger handy you’re going to go with an iPhone 7.
What cell phone plans can I get with the iPhone 7?
You can still get the iPhone 7 through all the major carriers in the country. This is actually a big deal, because you still have tons of wireless options despite opting for an older iPhone. Currently, these are the most popular cell phone plans that pair with the iPhone 7.
iPhone 6 Plus: Best iPhone under $200
What we like
We’ve crossed the threshold now where you’ll start to notice a bigger difference between the iPhone 6 Plus and current iPhones—which is why Apple doesn’t even sell these bad boys anymore. But still, the iPhone 6 Plus (which I used for a while, by the way) still has a beautiful 5.5-inch HD display that beats out both the new iPhone SE and iPhone 7.
If you tend to spend your phone time streaming YouTube or browsing social media, the iPhone 6 Plus will feel amazing for the price. But since the processor is a few years old at this point, don’t plan on doing much gaming or intense photo/video editing on your iPhone 6 Plus.
The iPhone 6 Plus is one of the last iPhone that still has the old school headphone jack. You know, the headphone jack that works with like 90% of headphones? It’s super convenient having a headphone jack that actually works with non-Apple headphones.
What we don’t like
The iPhone 6 Plus (that’s under $200) only comes with 16 GB of storage space. You’d be surprised how quickly you fill up 16 GB of data on your phone. For reference, I have an iPad with 16 GB of data, and I just had to delete all the stored text messages on there to make room for an app update. For that reason, the iPhone 6 Plus makes sense only for folks who don’t plan on downloading tons of apps or storing all of their photos.
What cell phone plans can I get with the iPhone 6 Plus?
Since the iPhone 6 Plus isn’t sold by Apple anymore, your options for a direct purchase with a cell phone provider is extremely limited. In fact, there’s only one carrier that sells the iPhone 6 Plus directly, and that’s Total Wireless. Of course, you can always try to buy a used iPhone 6 Plus or buy an unlocked device from a retailer and sign up for any cell phone plan you want.
Recap: What are the best cheap iPhones?
Apple products are notoriously expensive, but if you wait a few years or find the right deal, you can still get pretty awesome phones for an affordable price. Out of the whole catalog of iPhones old and new, these three were our favorites for the best cheap iPhones.
What are the best cheap iPhones?
- Best iPhone under $400: The iPhone SE (2020) offers the most bang for your buck out of any iPhone device right now. It’s not the cheapest you can get, but it still gives you an iPhone 11-like experience for half the price.
- Best iPhone under $300: The iPhone 7 is the oldest phone still sold by Apple, making it one of the cheapest. It still has a decent processor and camera that will work reliably in 2020.
- Best iPhone under $200: The iPhone 6 Plus is the rare iPhone that you can get for under $200 and still have it work somewhat well. With a 5.5-inch HD display, the iPhone 6 Plus still looks very vibrant when streaming.
For the sake of this article, I used an iPhone 4 for a few days and let me tell you, it was terrible. Basically no apps are compatible with that old of a phone, and providers like AT&T and T-Mobile won’t even support 3G phones in the near future.
Tell us about your experience opting for a cheaper iPhone rather than going for the latest and greatest devices. Has it been worth the few hundred bucks you’ve been able to save? Let us know in the comments below!
Wi-Fi helps every phone, no matter how old
Even if your phone doesn’t have the strongest specs in the world, a solid Wi-Fi connection will make streaming YouTube and watching Instagram Stories a seamless experience. Seriously, it’s probably better to have a strong internet connection than it is to have the best processor chip in the world.
These are our picks for the best internet providers that will hook your phone up with speedy Wi-Fi while you’re at home.

What’s the Cheapest iPhone?
The cheapest iPhone is the iPhone SE. At $399 still as of 11/9/16, it’s $250 cheaper than the iPhone 7 and $350 cheaper than the iPhone 7 plus. People who buy this iPhone are sacrificing physical size and in some cases memory and battery life. The easiest way to buy it is to get it from the Apple Store. The Store has the iPhone SE in and out of contract. For used or reconditioned or iPhones, Amazon, Overstock and Newegg and Verizon have the cheapest iPhones on the market. The only way to get a cheaper iPhone is to buy used.
Cheapest iPhone: iPhone SE
The table below compares the iPhone SE to the other iPhone models currently for sale from Apple. Really the biggest difference between the cheapest iPhone and the more expensive ones is size. The trend in smartphones has been for bigger and bigger screens, which means bigger, heavier phones. That also comes with longer battery life in some cases or more memory. Surprisingly, it doesn’t have to mean a slower phone or a sacrifice in camera quality. If you’re not one of those smartphone users who won’t be satisfied until you can hide from a hailstorm beneath your phone, the SE is the iPhone you’ve been looking for. In this case, “cheapest” doesn’t mean “worst.”
Apart from screen size, there’s virtually no reason to go for the iPhone 6 over the cheapest iPhone – the SE. The SE has a 12MP camera vs the 6’s 8MP. The SE has the newer A9 chip, while the iPhone 6 has the older A8 chip. What’s the difference between A8 and A9? Speed. According to most tech publications on the web, the A9 chip is anywhere from 50% to 70% faster than the old A8 chip . The bottom line? Anyone who buys the iPhone 6 loves the idea of a slightly bigger screen so much they’re willing to pay an extra $150 and sacrifice camera quality and speed.
The iPhone 6 Plus’s $649 price tag makes slightly more sense compared to the cheapest iPhone – the SE. Not only does it have a much bigger screen, it also has about twice the battery life. However, with the A8 chip, it’s also slower and has an 8MP camera. Using the same logic as above, anyone who buys the 6 Plus over the cheapest iPhone is willing to give up $250, plus speed and camera quality in exchange for a much bigger screen and longer lasting battery.
The iPhone 6s makes a bit more sense. It’s not the cheapest, but at the same price as the 6 Plus, it’s still only $250 more than the SE. For that extra money, shoppers get the same speedy A9 chip that’s in the SE, plus the same camera resolution, a bigger screen and higher max memory potential. That’s probably worth the money for some iPhone users.
What about the iPhone 6s Plus? For those who love big screens and have the extra cash, this choice is a no-brainer. True, it’s $350 more than the SE. Still, it’s got a much bigger screen, higher max memory and longer battery life than the cheapest iPhone. Once Apple fans factor in the fantastic trade in deals on offer , the extra $350 doesn’t really seem that bad a bump.
Cheapest iPhone Under Contract
Some people really, really want an iPhone but they don’t want to pay even the $399 up front price for the cheapest model on the market. For those shoppers, Apple has it covered. Consumers can get the cheapest iPhone for $0 up front, provided they’re okay with paying a monthly contract fee. Monthly payments are anywhere from upwards of $36.58 a month for the iPhone 6s Plus down to $16.66 for an iPhone SE, all the way down to $11.67 for an iPhone 5s. Once again, these exact deals may not be around still by the time you read this article. The point here isn’t to show exact deals but to show some options shoppers can find online with minimal searching.
Cheapest iPhone Without Contract (Older Models but Not Used)
Overstock has some good deals on “new” cheap iPhones, as long as you don’t mind older models.
For shoppers who just want the cheapest non-used iPhone and they don’t care if it’s been discontinued, the table below is a good starting point. It’s possible to get an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 online, brand new, still in the box, for under $100. That’s $300 less than even the cheapest iPhone in the table above. The specs are naturally a lot lower-grade than the iPhones currently for sale on the Apple store. 8GB of memory instead of a minimum of 16GB, a 7hr battery, a 3.5 inch screen and a slower processor are all drawbacks. Still, it’s an iPhone, and it’s cheap. These exact deals may not be available by the time you read this article, so we haven’t included direct links. That said, the offers below should give you a good place to start if you’re just looking for a cheap new iPhone and you don’t care about the latest models.
Cheapest Used/Refurbished iPhones
Check out NewEgg for some cheap deals on used iPhones.
Shoppers who are willing to put up with used or refurbished goods can find the very cheapest iPhones online by doing a quick search at Amazon, Overstock and NewEgg. A MoneyNation hunt for used phones turned up cheap deals on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models in the $50-$70 range. We’ve once again put together a table of cheap deals below for comparison’s sake. Again, these particular items have almost certainly sold by now, so this section should serve as a tip: Check out Amazon first, Overstock second and NewEgg last. BestBuy also offers reconditioned iPhones cheap online, but they didn’t have any of the iPhone 4 or 4S models in stock at the time we did the search, so their prices were considerably higher. Still, if you’re looking for an iPhone 5 or 5s, check them out.

In several places, you stated that the iPhone SE’s battery life was an issue or a reason for picking a different iPhone– that it was LESS THAN that of other models.
You even made what was clearly an erroneous statement about the 6 Plus:
“Not only does it have a much bigger screen, it also has about twice the battery life. ”
Well, the capacity of the big 6S Plus may be bigger than that of the iPhone SE, but it has to drive that bigger screen and at faster speeds and that costs it.
The result is that the iPhone SE’s battery life may well be the best of the iPhones!
You make a valid point Paul, but in this article we’re going by the tech specs that Apple specifically lists on its website. The SE is definitely the cheapest iPhone. As far as battery life, that depends, but Apple says it has a 12hr battery and that some other models have 24hr batteries.
