Где появилась поддержка сторонних шрифтов

С релизом iOS 13 и iPadOS поддержка сторонних шрифтов появилась во всех приложениях Apple, где есть опция форматирования текста.

Новые шрифты можно сразу же опробовать в стандартном почтовом клиенте, текстовом редакторе Pages, табличном редакторе Numbers и программе для создания презентаций Keynote.

Сторонние разработчики получили в свое распоряжение специальные API, внедрение которых позволит использовать установленные сторонние шрифты из iOS 13.

За прошедшие полгода многие программы обзавелись это полезной возможностью.

Какие форматы шрифтов поддерживаются

В мобильных операционных системах Apple появилась поддержка следующих типов шрифтов:

TTF (TrueType Font), который основан на совместной разработке Apple и Microsoft конца 80-х годов. Тогда компании объединились, чтобы предоставить достойную альтернативу векторным шрифтам от Adobe. На данный момент этот формат шрифтов наиболее распространён как в Windows, так и в macOS.

TTC (коллекция TrueType) – доработанная версия TrueType, позволяющая объединять схожие шрифты в один файл и снижать объем исходных данных.

OTF (OpenType Font), основанная на TrueType разработка Adobe и Microsoft середины 90-х годов. Шрифты поддерживаются операционными системами macOS, Windows и Linux.

Где искать новые шрифты

На данный момент шрифты можно найти на сайтах разработчиков: Adobe, DynaFont, FounderType, Monotype, Morisawa.

Есть возможность установки шрифтов через приложения из App Store. Добавление сторонних шрифтов на iOS 12 и более ранних версиях тоже возможно, но для этого требуется установка сторонних профилей разработчиков.

Как установить новые шрифты на iPhone и iPad

Есть сразу несколько способов добавить новые шрифты в iOS. Обратите внимание, что добавленные данные не мигрируют между устройствами через iCloud или другой облачный сервис.

Все необходимые шрифты придется загружать на каждом устройстве, где это необходимо.

1. Установка через приложение

Такой способ возможен на любом устройстве с iOS 13 или iPadOS. Нужно лишь найти подходящую программу в App Store.

Как удалять шрифты из iOS

Для удаления шрифтов, которые устанавливались через приложения для iOS 13 или iPadOS, нужно сделать следующее:

1. Перейдите в Настройки – Основные – Шрифты.

2. Найдите ненужный шрифт в списке или через поиск.

3. Свайпом удалите установленный шрифт.

Room for improvement

It works decently well and has saved me hours of searching through fonts. That said, sometimes what is shows isn’t remotely close. It might that the database is limited considering how many fonts are out there. It’s not a deal breaker but it’s annoying that I have to delete the pictures I take using the app from my other photos. It would be nice if there was at least the option to only allow the pictures to exist while using the app.

Not particularly helpful

The fonts identified often look quite close to your source image, but it overlooks commonly available font matches in favor of ones you’d have to buy from a developer.

Case in point: I couldn’t remember which font I’d used for a particular project from several years ago, but knew it was on my system. The app gave me a dozen close matches I’d never heard of and didn’t have. I finally tracked down an old electronic file, which showed me I’d used Haettenschweiler. It’s available on most Windows machines, but was nowhere on the list the app gave me.

It earns a second star for a clean interface, as well as for actually finding some close matches, but no higher because I suspect the developers are purposely skipping over commonly available fonts due to some kind of licensing agreement with font merchants.

Flawless!

When I first got this app, I thought the 1k+ of five star reviews were fake. NOPE. When you open the app, you can chose to get a tutorial or just wing it. The starter pack animations are GREAT, despite the fact that they may be considered “un-original.” You can buy more animation packs (with real money), but they are very cheap! They get down to $0.99, and the average is only $2.99-$3.99. Not bad! There are also plenty of FREE packs. I definitely recommend.

(My one issue is whenever I try and get a free animation pack, it says “Store Notice: Store unavailable — user is not authorized to make payments.” I can’t figure out how to get a free pack!)

Amazing! And with the app, you can discover which font this is!

Was going for the long shot, in the hopes that maybe something similar to this, but much simpler would be available. I guess I got lucky! This does everything! And it’s especially helpful for when you need to crop text and edit things but cannot figure out the original font used. For example, one of my friends writes beautiful poetry, and I wanted to save it because reading it made me happy, and I wanted others to see his works as well. He had uploaded his poetry to his poetry page, which does not allow you to save-the only other option being to copy and paste, and I didn’t want it to look cheap. So my only option left was to take a screen shot, crop the photos and use a scan app to give it an original text appearance. In doing so, I accidentally got rid of the title, as well as his name 🙁 Thankfully, using this app I was able to restore it to its former glory! And for those who may believe this is an elaborate explanation for someone that wants to plagiarize, don’t kid yourselves. One of my two majors is English, and I loathe the very thought of taking credit for something that isn’t your own. I’d hate to be the person that tries to steal my creations. ANYWAYS. AMAZING app and job well done to the developer!

Great font extension!

True, this is not an app as someone mentioned, it’s more an extension/add-on for Safari, and the directions to set it up are very clear and easy to follow and take only a minute. I’ve used out countless times to identify fonts and it works great—I love it!

Good app, but blinking issue

Hello, awesome plug-in, but I’ve found that some items may flicker on the page load, if your plugin is installed in Safari.

usually it happens, when item has «transform: xxx» property in css. Then it flickers while loading and it happens only with your plug-in on and makes debugging more complex.

Could you make it stop flickering? So much help!

A wonderful little Safari extension that identifies web fonts in use

While it’s new to the App Store, I’ve been using WhatFont for a while; it’s great for font geeks like me, designers and developers. When you open WhatFont the first time, it’ll ask you to activate it in Safari preferences; then it’ll install a little button next to the search window on Safari. When you click the button, it activates Whatfont, and when you hover over text on a website, it’ll display an elegant little “tooltip”-style bubble that tells you what font you’re seeing. Then, if you tap/click, a larger window opens that shows you the font family, stack info, style, weight, size, line height and hex number. An “Exit WhatFont” bubble-button sits at the top right of the Safari window, so you can deactivate it and get back to regular viewing as soon as you have your info. Truly helpful, very simple.

Very useful extension

Been using it since it was still hosted on GitHub. In the macOS Mojave update Apple shut down all extensions not from the Safari Extensions Gallery, so I’m quite happy it’s come back on the App Store!
