The Next Apple Event: Dates, News, Rumors, and Announcements
What to expect from the computer giant’s next launch event
Apple holds events several times each year to announce new products and services. Aside from the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), there are usually Spring and Fall events that zero in on certain products.
A random extra event can pop up, too, as it did in Fall 2021 when the company held an event in September 2021 to announce the iPhone 13 and another in October 2021 to announce the new MacBook Pro and the 3rd generation of AirPods.
What Is the Next Apple Event?
The next event is expected to be held in Spring 2022. Check back here for updates, rumors, and announcements.
How to Attend the Event
Apple usually offers a free live stream to everyone; the Spring 2022 event is expected to be no different. Crank up your PC or mobile device and connect in to see what the tech giant has to show.
What Was Announced at the October 2021 Event?
In addition to a new Voice Plan for Apple Music and the new HomePod mini, Apple made several exciting product announcements:
- The 3rd generation of AirPods feature spatial audio, Dolby Atmos, dynamic headtracking, and adaptive EQ. They’re sweat and water resistant and have a new contour design. A full charge delivers 6 hours of listening time, while five minutes of charging provides sufficient power for one hour of listening. They can be ordered now from Apple for $179 with delivery in or after the week of 10/25.
- The new M1 Pro chip has up to 10-core CPU, up to 16-core GPU, up to 32GB of unified memory, and a memory bandwidth of 200GB per second. It features Media Engine with ProRes support, Thunderbolt 4, and support for up to two external displays, and it offers industry-leading performance per watt.
- The new M1 Max chip has 10-core CPU, up to 32-core GPU, up to 64GB of unified memory, and a memory bandwidth of 400GB per second. With a 16-core neural engine, it can handle 11 trillion operations per second. It features Media Engine with ProRes support, Thunderbolt 4, and support for up to four external displays. It offers industry-leading performance per watt: Compared to the fastest PC laptop Apple could find, the M1 Max offers comparable performance at 100W less power.
- The new 14-inch MacBook Pro and the new 16-inch MacBook Pro come equipped with the M1 Pro or the M1 Max, and they offer up to 3.7 times faster CPU and up to 13 times faster graphics performance. Providing up to 64GB of memory and up to 8TB of storage, they run macOS Monterey. They feature an aluminum enclosure with advanced thermal architecture, magic keyboard with expanded trackpad, larger displays, a six-speaker sound system with spatial audio, and a mic with a 60% lower noise floor. They have an HDMI port, three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SD card slot, and a headphone jack. The 14-inch can support up to two external displays; the 16-inch can support up to three external displays and one TV; and they feature a 1080p, wide-aperture lens. With the new power-efficient M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, they offer up to 21 hours of battery life. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 and the new 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,499.

When is the next Apple event? iPhone SE 3, new iPads and Macs could be coming soon
Will the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE 3 debut in 2022? What about the Apple Watch 8 or new Mac models? We’ll have to wait and see, but here’s what rumors say.
When will Apple host another launch event? We’ll have to wait and see what rumors say.
Apple showed off a wide collection of new products in 2021, from the iPhone 13 lineup to the Apple Watch 7 and upgraded MacBook Pro laptops . But as we inch closer to the new year, rumors about what the tech giant has in store for 2022 and when the next event will be held continue to grow.
The latest Power On newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, reported on by 9to5Mac, breaks down everything we could see from Apple next year, including a new iPad Pro, a revamped iMac with Apple silicon, a 5G iPhone SE, updated AirPods Pro earbuds, upgraded versions of the Mac Mini and three new Apple Watch models, among other things. Here’s a full list of Gurman’s 2022 predictions:
- iPhone 14 lineup
- 5G iPhone SE
- Updated iPad Pro, iPad Air and entry-level iPad
- New high-end iMac with Apple silicon
- New AirPods Pro earbuds
- Upgraded MacBook Air with a new design and M2 chip
- New Mac Mini model, entry-level MacBook Pro and Mac Pro with Apple silicon
- Apple’s mixed augmented and virtual reality headset
- Three new Apple Watch models with an updated Apple Watch SE, a standard Apple Watch and a more durable version for extreme sports athletes
Apple’s most recent event was held in October, when the company unveiled the AirPods 3 and new MacBook Pro laptops powered by M1 Pro and M1 Max Apple silicon chips (check out CNET’s 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro reviews), alongside more HomePod Mini colors , a $5 voice-only plan for Apple Music and the release of MacOS Monterey .
Prior to Apple’s October launch event, the company hosted three other events in 2021. The first event was in April, when we saw new iPad upgrades , colorful iMacs , AirTags trackers , a purple iPhone 12 and more. ( Here’s everything Apple announced in the spring .) Then, two months later, it held the annual WWDC developers event, when we saw a first look at iOS 15 , MacOS Monterey , WatchOS 8 and iPadOS 15 .
We then saw a third event from Apple in September , when the company unveiled its new iPhone 13 lineup with the Apple Watch 7 , iPad Mini 6 and updated entry-level iPad . The iPhone 13 lineup mirrors last year’s iPhone 12 collection with standard, Mini , Pro and Pro Max versions. The updated iPhone runs on iOS 15 and features a few camera upgrades , upped storage, a new A15 Bionic processor and more. (Here’s how you can buy the iPhone 13 now.)
But when is the next Apple event? Will we see the iPhone SE 3 or a more affordable Apple display next year? A faster Mac Mini ? Read on for everything we know so far, including which products Apple could unveil. We’ll update this story as new information becomes available.
When is the next Apple event? We will likely have to wait until next year
Since Apple’s October event was its fourth launch this year, it’s likely we won’t see Apple host another event until the spring of 2022.
Apple typically hosts three to four events every year, usually including a spring event, a summer developer conference and one or two more events in the fall. The fall events are often held in September and October and tend to feature new iPhones and Apple Watch upgrades, while the October event typically features new Macs and iPads.
With that history in mind, the next Apple event is likely to take place in the spring of 2022, perhaps in March or April. However, it’s also possible that whatever products or announcements the company has ready next spring will be announced without the hoopla of a live event, in which case we’re looking at June for Apple’s annual WWDC.
Stay up-to-date on the latest news, reviews and advice on iPhones, iPads, Macs, services and software.
Apple’s event pattern slightly shifted in 2020 due to production delays during the pandemic . Last year’s September Apple event revealed the Apple Watch 6 , Apple Watch SE and updated iPad models — but no new iPhone. The company later took the wraps off the iPhone 12 in October. Last year’s Apple event, and subsequent events this year, were also online-only due to the pandemic. A livestream was available as usual through the company’s website.
As the pandemic continues to affect many, we’ll have to wait and see if Apple will return for an in-person event next year or continue to be virtual-only.
Apple revealed new MacBook Pro models at its most recent event.
New products we expect: iPhone SE 3, faster Mac Mini and more
Apple unveiled a slew of hardware and software upgrades in 2021, including the AirPods 3 , iPhone 13 , Apple Watch 7 , and new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops . But, there are still a few things we expect the tech giant to announce at its next event. We hope to see the iPhone SE 3 , a more affordable Apple display and faster Mac Mini . We’re also on the lookout for a few long rumored devices like an Apple competitor to the Amazon Echo Show smart display, a soundbar with a built-in Apple TV and possibly an Apple AR/VR headset.
iPhone SE 3
Apple showed off its revamped iPhone SE in the spring of 2020, but this year the petite iPhone was a no-show. According to a research note from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 3 will likely make its debut in the first half of 2022. Other rumors suggest the new budget-friendly iPhone could sport an LCD display, 5G support, a retro design and Face ID.
If you can’t wait until next year for the new iPhone SE, check out CNET’s review of the 2020 iPhone SE. And does it still make sense to buy an iPhone SE in 2021 ?
Apple iPhone SE, shown above, could be getting an update soon.
Midrange Apple display
Apple may also be working on a more affordable version of its Pro Display XDR that was originally released in 2019 for just under $5,000 (not including the $1,000 stand). Bloomberg reported in January that a cheaper Apple monitor was in » early development .»
Faster Mini Mac
Last year, Apple unveiled its Mac Mini with the M1 chip . But now that the tech giant has taken the wraps off its M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, when will we see a faster Mac Mini? Gurman previously speculated in August that a new, more powerful Mac Mini could be coming in the » next several months .»
Updated 27-inch iMac and MacBook Air
Apple previously announced a new iMac powered by the M1 processor , but it was only the smaller 24-inch model. Bloomberg has reported that Apple is working on processor updates for the 27-inch iMac.
The MacBook Air could also be due for an upgrade. The 2020 MacBook Air was the first to sport Apple’s M1 chip. Now Gurman hypotheses the MacBook Air could get a redesign and new rumored M2 chip next year.
New iPad Pro, iPad Air and entry-level iPad
According to Gurman, Apple is planning to update the iPad Pro with a new design and wireless charging support. Gurman speculates Apple could upgrade the iPad Air and entry-level iPad in 2022, as well.
iPhone 14
Apple released its iPhone 13 lineup in September, but the smartphone’s successor, the iPhone 14, is likely to make an appearance in the fall of 2022. The iPhone 14 is rumored to finally ditch the notched display , and could house under-display Touch ID, as well. (Here are all the iPhone 14 rumors we’ve heard so far .)
Apple Watch 8
Apple has announced a new version of its popular Apple Watch every year since the launch of the original in 2014. Gurman predicts Apple could unwrap three new Apple watch models in 2022 with a new Apple Watch SE, an updated standard version (possibly called the Apple Watch 8 ) and a more durable model for extreme sports athletes (and people who want to look like extreme sports athletes).
New devices: Echo Show competitor, soundbar with Apple TV, AR/VR headset and more
We could still see some other brand-new devices from Apple if not next year, then some time in the future. This includes a possible Apple competitor to the Amazon Echo Show that would fuse an entry-level iPad with a speaker, a soundbar equipped with built-in Apple TV similar to Roku’s soundbar , an Apple augmented or virtual reality headset , Apple Glasses and an Apple Car .

NASDAQ: AAPL
Apple Inc.
The iPhone-maker will become a broader services ecosystem over the next decade, but the iPhone will still be key.
Earlier this year, Forbes magazine rated Apple ( AAPL 3.55% ) as the most valuable brand in the world for the 10th straight year. That’s pretty impressive for a company that’s focused on technology, an industry in which things can change at light speed. Yet Apple has gotten to become the largest company in the world by market cap not by trying to become the largest smartphone vendor, but the most beloved. More than any other tech company, Apple has always heralded the end user experience above everything else, not merely the speed, storage capacity, or other technological specs of its gadgets.
That commitment to melding technology with the liberal arts was established under late founder Steve Jobs, and it continues to this day under current CEO Tim Cook. And as long as Apple’s future management takes care of the brand and expands it into new areas, Apple should continue its strong track record.
Apple’s innovations are usually incremental, applying its design chops to the latest consumer tech trends. Apple didn’t invent the MP3 player or the smartphone, but it went on to dominate those products through its focus on design, user experience, and brand cachet.
Looking out 10 years, the Apple of 2030 should continue to incrementally improve its hardware products and even introduce some new ones — but in a new twist, Apple will also expand its brand to develop a suite of bundled consumer services. That will be a big challenge for the tech giant, but also an opportunity. And of course, there’s the possibility of a new out-of-the blue blockbuster invention during the next decade as well. Here’s what customers and shareholders can look forward to in the Apple of 2030.

Still making gadgets and iPhones
While many think we’ll all be living on Mars and communicating through telepathy in 2030, I think we’ll still be using smartphones as our primary gateway to the world. Of course, it will be a far better, faster, and more functional smartphone, operating on one of the 5G networks currently in their early buildouts today.
The 4G standard was introduced in 2009 and is still in use today. 5G, which has just begun, will probably take a longer time to ramp up because of the complexity of building out expensive «small cells» throughout the country. Given the difficulty involved in building out 5G networks, the 5G standard will probably also last well into the 2030s before the introduction of «6G,» whatever that may be.
Apple’s first 5G iPhone was due to come out this September, but rumors are that the introduction will be pushed back about a month because of the coronavirus outbreak. Still, even though a 5G iPhone will probably be out this year, a lot of the new space-age applications that many anticipate probably won’t be ready until networks are more fully built out in next several years. This is why Apple took its time in releasing a 5G phone well after other Asian smartphone vendors.
Some also think there could be another gadget «beyond» the iPhone that becomes the new communication super-gadget. One possibility is «smart glasses» that might allow a person to communicate, read, and interface the internet in an augmented-reality-like screen on the lens, rather than the screen of an iPhone.
Rumors are that Apple is already working on pair of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) smart glasses that could be released as early as 2022, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple did make a recent AR-based acquisition just this month, acquiring NEXTVR for roughly $100 million in mid-May. NEXTVR enables the watching of sports, music, and other entertainment events through all of the major VR headset vendors, and it has already inked deals with the NBA, Wimbledon, Fox Sports, the WWE and other sports productions entities as well.
Aside from potential smart glasses, Apple is also rumored to be working on a self-driving car. However, the Apple car, code-named Project Titan, has gone through several fits and starts over the years, with some believing Apple has now abandoned the car idea altogether to focus on autonomous software systems. However, Apple made a key automotive hire as recently as late 2018, bringing in ex-Tesla ( TSLA 4.24% ) executive Doug Field, leading many to believe the Apple car project is still on. For his part, Ming-Chi Kuo thinks an Apple Car will be released somewhere in the 2023-2025 timeframe, bringing in another potential star product into Apple’s arsenal of devices, with the car being the biggest and boldest project yet.
Besides these new, futuristic projects, I’d still expect Apple to still be selling plenty of iPhones, Apple Watches, iPad tablets, laptops, and desktops alike, even 10 years out. After all, the personal computing laptop was invented 40 years ago, and I think it’s unlikely to change very much as mankind’s main tool to get work done.

Services will be key
Since the iPhone established itself as the world’s most important electronic device in 2007, it has only grown in importance to consumers ever since. As Apple investor Warren Buffett said of the iPhone: «It’s a very, very, very valuable product to people that build their lives around it. And that’s true of 8-year-olds and 80-year-olds.»
In other words, the iPhone isn’t just a phone but is now the best distribution platform in the world. That has enabled Apple to profit handsomely from sales of iOS applications through the app store, for which Apple typically takes a 30% cut. However, it appears that Apple itself will become more of a services company, releasing more and more of its own «private label» services. Apple has put a lot of money and resources behind a slew of new Apple-branded services over the past year: Apple TV+, the Apple credit card, Apple News+, and Apple Arcade, supplementing the existing Apple Care, iCloud storage, Apple Music, and Apple Pay services the company had already developed out over the past few years.
Look for these services to grow in importance over the next decade. Last quarter, Apple’s services business grew 16.6% to $13.3 billion, making up 22.9% of Apple’s total sales, while hardware sales fell. Even better, services gross margin is higher than those of Apple’s hardware products, with gross margin of 65.3%, versus just 30.3% for hardware.
Like other large tech giants, Apple will make a big effort to create a bundled ecosystem of consumer services over the next decade, as hardware sales inevitably slow down but Apple’s installed base expands. I expect several new private-label services to be introduced over the coming decade, and for the existing services to get better over time. By 2030, it’s quite possible there will be an Apple-branded version of just about every type of entertainment, financial, or other consumer service. A big acquisition or two may happen to accomplish this feat as well in certain areas. By 2030, it’s possible that over half of Apple’s sales come from these services, as management takes Apple’s brand beyond mere gadgets.
And of those new services, the most consequential could very well be consumer health.

Can healthcare be a game-changer?
Of Apple’s healthcare initiatives, CEO Tim Cook once said, «If you zoom out into the future, and you look back, and you ask the question, ‘What was Apple’s greatest contribution to mankind?’ It will be about health.» That sounds pretty bold, given that Apple has invented some of the most consequential technology innovations in modern times and is definitely not a healthcare company by trade.
At least not yet. Apple has always been about the intersection of technology and humanity, and as we become more and more attached to our electronic devices, it’s not a surprise that these devices, which are on or near our bodies virtually 24/7, would become pivotal tools in improving our health.
Apple currently has a number of health initiatives going, at least those of which we know about. The company has enrolled Apple Watch users in three separate studies across heart health, gynecological health, and hearing. Apple Watch’s built-in electrocardiogram (ECG) function can detect irregular heartbeats from a condition known as myocardial ischemia, a potentially life-threatening condition. Most recently, a German woman’s Apple Watch detected her ischemia that even her hospital’s ECG machine didn’t pick up, potentially saving her life. One can expect upcoming versions of the Apple Watch to have even more life-enhancing features around wellness, such as sleep tracking, blood oxygen monitoring, stress measurement, and more.
Apple is also taking on the big challenge of solving the problem of electronic health records, as many health systems use different formats, making gathering a patient’s information difficult. But by standardizing on an Apple format, care facilities may hope to bring in a patient’s records seamlessly and easily, no matter where the patient had been treated before. As of last November, Apple claimed it had achieved 16% penetration into U.S. health systems.
Finally, Apple may also play a key role in helping to trace the coronavirus, if its new contact tracing application built into iOS gets regulator approval and rolls out soon. Apple also recently donated $10 million to COPAN diagnostics to ramp up its sample COVID-19 testing kit production to millions of tests per week by this summer.
When asked on the recent conference call with analysts if COVID-19 had opened up new doors for Apple, Tim Cook said: «I wouldn’t say that the health door opened wider. I would say it was already opened fairly wide.»
A brave new world for Apple
As Apple’s devices become more and more intimately intertwined with our own lives, there’s tremendous opportunity for the company, but also risk. After all, creating beautiful devices is one thing. However, now that Apple is a distributor of a credit card, will it take on brand risk if any sort of malfeasance happens around its financial services? After all, Wells Fargo ( WFC 2.95% ) was also a beloved banking brand until it slipped up in 2016, and it hasn’t recovered since.
Apple is also now producing its own TV and film content. What kind of content should it make? Family-friendly fare, or gritty, challenging content aiming to shake up the status quo? Can it do both? What is more closely aligned with Apple’s brand as it becomes more of a global mainstream company? And is it too late to catch up with Netflix ( NFLX 2.10% ) and others, which have been at this for longer? Moreover, as Apple digs further into people’s health, that opens up a whole can of worms around liability and also privacy.
These are all issues Apple is going to have to grapple with in the 2020s, but the company will need to contend with them if Apple is to become more a services company by 2030, which is key to its profit growth.
However, as long as the company adheres to its brand principles, admits mistakes, and keeps improving its products and services while maintaining its technological edge, shareholders should still have a lot to look forward to over the next decade.
