Best Android TV Box (Updated 2021)
This list includes our picks for the best Android TV box you can find in 2021. Check it out for reliable products at reasonable prices.
TV and streaming services have certainly received a boost due to the coronavirus pandemic. With limited places to go, binge-watching favorite shows and movies have become a big part of the new normal. Whether you’re a cord-cutter, you have a non-smart TV, or you subscribe to a streaming service that is not included with your smart TV, a streaming device can be a necessity. Let’s face it, you have to have a way to get your favorite episodes or movies from your apps to your TV.
With streaming becoming more and more popular, the number of streaming devices has exploded along with the number of services available. While streaming devices all pretty much do the same thing, how they do it and what apps they offer are how they can be differentiated. Apple fans may opt for Apple TV and Roku has carved out a nice niche, but there is another choice when it comes to streaming devices. Android TV may not be as popular or well-known, but it is a very versatile and content filled OS built upon the Android OS many are familiar with but optimized for TV viewing. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best Android TV box. In this list of the best Android TV boxes that you can find in 2021, we’ve included some of the most updated technology in TV boxes. Browse our recommendations and review the pros & cons of each product to choose which is best suited for you!
1. Nvidia Shield TV
Top of the line can usually mean whatever the item is, it will come with all the bells and whistles that cheaper models will lack. A lot of times, that extra tech candy simply goes unused on some Android TV boxes, like built-in media servers and additional connectivity options. The NVIDIA Shield TV is a TV box that doesn’t have everything but is nonetheless an excellent Android TV box choice.
Built into a tubular, sort of baton shape, the Shield TV is powered by a Tegra X1+ CPU, with 2GB RAM, and 8 GB of storage. It is designed to be hidden away, possibly behind the TV. The Shield TV does not come with USB ports, but it does feature dual-band wi-fi, Bluetooth, HDMI, and gigabit ethernet. Also, there are no built-in media servers like Plex, but Chromecast is built-in. The included remote is very useful with motion activation, backlit keys, voice control, and lost remote locator. Video performance is excellent with 4K content with crisp colors and deep blacks. Non-4K content is also impressive thanks to AI upscaling, which will make what you’re watching seem more detailed than its original resolution.
NVIDIA is certainly no slouch when it comes to video performance and the Shield TV amply demonstrates that prowess in 4K streaming. It may not have all the features that it could have, particularly at its price point, but any such shortcomings are quickly forgotten when you turn down the lights and be wowed by the picture quality. The NVIDIA Shield TV is absolutely one of the best Android TV boxes.
2. NVIDIA Shield TV Pro
You would expect the inventor of the graphics processing unit (GPU) to be good at just about everything related to video game graphics. But, that begs the question of whether NVIDIA’s video game prowess extends to video streaming. The NVIDIA Shield TV Pro proves that NVIDIA is good at just about everything graphics related.
Featuring a stylish and very lightweight micro-console, the Shield TV Pro has a powerful Tegra X1+ processor with 3GB RAM and a rather spartan 16 GB of storage. Connectivity is handled via gigabit ethernet, dual-band wi-fi, and Bluetooth 5.0, one HDMI slot, and two USB 3.0 ports. The included remote is excellent, featuring motion activation, backlit keys, and a lost remote locator. The built-in Plex media server is great for your movie library. Great features also include built-in Chromecast 4K and voice control. The Shield TV Pro excels at picture quality thanks to its AI enhanced upscaling, which boosts HD quality input to 4K levels. The Shield TV Pro is also a very capable 4K gaming machine with access to the Google Play store, NVIDIA Games, and GeForce Now libraries.
The NVIDIA Shield TV Pro may be one of the best Android TV boxes out there today. It is full of features for your streaming, and if you’re so inclined, your gaming pleasure. Thanks to its upgraded processor, it performs lag-free whether you stream movies or games. The NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is a very strong contender on the list of best Android TV boxes.
3. Diyomate D905
If you have a “dumb” TV, a streaming device is all you’ll need to smarten it up. But, do you really want to spend a lot of money on a streaming box when you eventually get a smart TV that may obviate the need for a separate box? A basic Android TV box is perfect for adding a little smarts to your TV and the Diyomate D905 is a great option.
Another square design, the D905 is powered by a Quad-core CPU, 1GB RAM, and 8 GB of storage. Connectivity comes via wi-fi, gigabit ethernet, USB, and HDMI. Having the speed capacity of USB 3.0 is a definite plus for the D905 when it comes to expanding the storage. Play store access means the D905 is compatible with many popular apps like YouTube, Netflix, etc. Having a remote at this low price point is a bonus, but that also means the remote does not have voice control, but it does feature a mouse function, which makes navigating the UI easy. Performance with the D905 is respectable, rendering 4K and HDR content fluidly and vibrantly.
Its basic features may make the Diyomate D905 an entry-level type of Android TV box, but at a sub $30.00 price, it is a great choice for updating a ‘dumb’ TV. It may not have many of the bells and whistles as other boxes, but it performs well and is easy to use. Even at such a low price, the D905 is worthy of being included in this listing of the best Android TV boxes.
4. Amazon Fire TV Cube
Obviously, most, if not all Android TV boxes are Google-centric running some version of Android TV. Android TV can be licensed to other OEMs which can create their own operating system “forks” that may not exactly look like Android TV but are based on it. As such, there can be TV boxes running operating systems that are based on Android, essentially making them Android TV boxes. The Amazon Fire TV Cube is one such TV box as its OS is a fork of Android TV.
The form factor of the Fire TV Cube is, well . a cube. Inside is a Hexa-core CPU with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage. Connectivity is via dual-band wi-fi, Bluetooth, and gigabit ethernet via an ethernet adapter. What sets the Fire TV Cube apart is its full integration of Alexa, the Amazon smart assistant. This allows not only voice control over the Fire TV Cube but also connected smart home devices. And, thanks to HDMI CEC, the included remote can control some TV functions. Content for the Fire TV Cube is obviously Amazon focused, but there is also access to most other streaming apps such as Netflix, HBO, YouTube, etc. 4K HDR performance is excellent with vibrant visuals and speedy load times.
The Amazon Fire TV Cube does an excellent job of integrating a smart assistant with a streaming device, making it more than just a media hub. It may run its own OS, but at its heart, it is Android. Exceptional 4K performance and control versatility place the Fire TV Cube firmly on the list of best Android TV boxes.
5. Xiaomi Mi Box S
Tech bells and whistles can be great, but they can also be cumbersome. When it comes to streaming, not all of us need or care for advanced features, we just want to get connected and watch. The Xiaomi Mi Box S is a basic Android TV box that will suit the needs of most users, and do so at a very affordable price and great performance.
A very understated design, the Mi Box S is a basic 3.5 inch square with rounded edges that is packed with a quad-core CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. Connectivity comes in the form of wi-fi, one USB-A port, an HDMI port that can output 4K HDR (HDR10), and an audio port. Chromecast is built-in for streaming directly from a cell phone. Sadly, there is no ethernet port. The included remote features dedicated buttons for Netflix and Google Assistant. Setup is relatively easy, especially if you are used to setting up Android devices. Running Android TV OS 8.1, the Mi Box S is a very capable performer, particularly at 1080p. It does a decent job with 4K, just not as reliably as it should be. This is a straight forward streaming box, and it does a good job at it.
Despite some of the downsides of the Xiaomi Mi Box S, it performs well as an Android TV box. It has entry-level features, but that will generally be enough for most users, particularly as a budget streaming box. Its affordability and decent performance place the Xiaomi Mi Box on the list of best Android TV boxes.
6. Minix Neo U9-H
Most Android TV boxes all have the same basic functionality; they serve as a conduit to serve up your streaming providers and their content to your tv. One of the more overlooked features of Android TV boxes can be the remote control. A lackluster remote control can ruin your overall streaming experience. The Minix Neo U9-H includes a well-featured remote that enhances the streaming experience.
The diminutive yet solidly built U9-H sports an Octa-core Cortex A53 CPU with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage. Connectivity includes dual-band wi-fi, USB, HDMI, Bluetooth, and gigabit ethernet. The performance of the U9-H is excellent, with quality 4K and HDR rendering. Videos load quickly and there is good support for a wide range of streaming apps. The U9-H’s performance is only enhanced by the included Neo A3 remote control. The A3 is an air remote thanks to its six-axis gyroscope. It also has a microphone for voice control to work with Google Assistant and the like. On the reverse of the A3 is a QWERTY keyboard for convenient text input. The A3 has a great range and makes controlling the U9-H an enjoyable experience.
The Minix Neo U9-H by itself is a very capable Android TV box with peppy performance and great picture quality. The included Neo A3 remote has features that add to the ease of control and enjoyment of the U9-H. Excellent performance and the inclusion of such a versatile remote place the U9-H firmly on the list of best Android TV boxes.
7. Ematic 4K Ultra HD
Just because it has an unfamiliar name doesn’t mean an Android TV box won’t be worth your hard-earned money. Sometimes, a gem can be found when you step away from the familiar and give little known brands a shot. You may never have heard of Ematic, but their 4K Ultra Android TV box is well worth taking a look at.
With a practical design (meaning a basic square design that will never win any awards), the Ematic 4K Ultra features a quad-core Cortex A5 CPU, 2GB RAM, and 8GB of storage. The Ematic has a full feature set of connectivity options with wi-fi, Bluetooth, gigabit ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, and an HDI port. Additional expansion is possible with the included microSD slot. The included remote features voice control and dedicated buttons for YouTube, Netflix, and the Google Play Store. Setup is quite easy, particularly with automatic wi-fi detection, and it can be done via an Android phone. The Ematic 4K Ultra is Google and Netflix certified, meaning regular updates and seamless Netflix 4K resolution. 4K HDR video streaming with the Ematic 4K Ultra is very good, producing clear and crisp resolution.
The Ematic 4K Ultra may not be widely known, but it holds its own against more recognizable TV boxes. For less than what bigger brands charge, the Ematic 4K Ultra comes with a full set of features to make streaming seamless and enjoyable. The Ematic 4K proves that a big name isn’t necessary to be listed as one of the best Android TV boxes.
8. Amazon Fire Stick TV 4K
Question: when is an Android TV box, not a box? Answer: when it’s a stick. There are many streaming devices out there that come in the stick or dongle form factor and can look like a big thumb drive. To put them in the category with other ‘true’ TV boxes, they should have a user interface running off an operating system optimized for TV viewing/streaming. The Amazon Fire Stick TV 4K is a good example of when an Android TV box doesn’t necessarily have to be an actual box.
Fire Stick 4K has a small form factor and is designed to be plugged directly into an HDMI port (though since the unit itself is quite thick, you may need to use the included HDMI extender to fit the unit to your TV). It is powered by a quad-core, 1.5GB RAM, and 8GB of storage. It is unfortunate that the internal storage is not upgradeable. Connectivity is sparse, featuring only wi-fi, Bluetooth, and the HDMI connector. The included Alexa Voice remote not only can control the Fire Stick 4K, but also some IR-compatible devices. Running the Fire OS, which is a variant of Android TV, the Fire Stick 4K is a peppy performer with fast load times. 4K and HDR quality are great with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Impressively, the menu system is also rendered in 4K.
The Amazon Fire Stick TV 4K may not be the traditional box, but it is nonetheless an excellent choice as a streaming device. It’s affordable price point and excellent performance firmly place it on this listing of best Android TV boxes.
9. Pendoo X6 Pro
Reliability is a must-have when streaming, whether it is from your internet connection or to whatever interface you use to tap into your chosen streaming service. Nothing can be more infuriating than lag, buffering, and dropped signals when watching your favorite shows. The Pendoo X6 Pro is an Android TV box that at least will quell reliability concerns, at least about your streaming box.
Built into a basic square box with rounded edges highlighted by a stylish sort of crackle design on the top, the X6 Pro features a very capable Allwinner H6 Quad-core CPU with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage. Thanks to its specs, the X6 Pro runs Android 9.0 seamlessly and with pep. Connectivity includes dual-band wi-fi, USB 3.0, Bluetooth, and gigabit ethernet. Where the X6 Pro is strongest is in its strong wi-fi connection as a result of an internal and external antenna. Dual-antenna and dual-band wi-fi provide a dependable wi-fi connection without dropped signals, buffering, or lag. Performance-wise, the X6 Pro provides great picture quality at 4K UHD. In all, the X6 Pro is a straight-forward Android TV box with reliability as its strongest feature.
The Pendoo X6 Pro may not have many of the added features other Android TV boxes may have, but the dependable wi-fi connection it offers will offset any such shortcomings. The X6 Pro may just cause you to get a better internet connection. Great reliability firmly places the Pendoo X6 Pro on the list of best Android TV boxes.
10. Turewell T95 Max
There are a lot of so-called ‘budget’ Android TV boxes out there to choose from, and like any other tech device, you get what you pay for. Considering the prevalence of streaming services and the ever-increasing number of cord-cutters, there should be good choices, even in the budget category. The Turewell T95 is a budget TV box that gives a lot for a little.
I don’t know what it is with the crackle design on the top of Android TV boxes is all about, but here’s another with it. Aesthetics aside, the compact T95 comes with a quad-core Allwinner H6 CPU, 4GB RAM, and 32GB of storage. Connectivity comes in the form of wi-fi, one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, an HDMI port, and gigabit ethernet. The lack of Bluetooth is unfortunate but not unexpected at this price point. It runs Android 9.0, so there is access to a multitude of apps, though it can be a bit quirky when setting things up. The T95 claims to have support for 6K (is that a thing yet?) as well as 4K though I have my doubts about how it will handle anything above 4K considering its specs. The performance of the T95 is what you would expect with a budget box, and the picture quality is very good, but maybe not on par with pricier boxes.
If you are looking for a basic Android TV box and not wanting to break the bank, the Turewell T95 Max is a great option. It performs well and deserving of inclusion on the list of best Android TV boxes.
When it comes to TV streaming boxes, Roku and Amazon immediately come to mind and that notoriety certainly accounts for their combined 70 percent market share for streaming devices. But, there is another option when it comes to streaming devices, the Android TV box. The main difference among the streaming devices is the operating system used. Unlike Google’s cell phone OS Android, the Android TV OS is not as widely known. It is a curiosity as to why Android TV has not become as ubiquitous, considering it is the same as the Android OS, only optimized for TV viewing. With as many Android phones out there, it would seem academic that more streamers would prefer a familiar operating system on their streaming boxes. But, the market is a fickle beast and Android TV remains an also-ran, but they are becoming more popular. However, there are still people who don’t know too much about Android TV, and that’s why we’re here.
What You Need To Know About Android TV
Android TV is well-suited as an OS for a streaming box. Access to the Google Play Store means there are hundreds of apps available to stream from your device to your TV (there are even some apps that are not yet available on Roku and Amazon Fire like Peacock and HBO Max). Being so versatile, Android TV can be a suitable option for streaming just about every service out there. And, since this is Android we’re talking about, just like there are many different options when choosing an Android phone, the options when it comes to Android TV streaming boxes are just as bountiful, but quantity doesn’t always mean quality. Things to look for in an Android TV box include resolution, app compatibility, connectivity, and useability. The 4K resolution standard is commonplace with most streaming boxes, including Android and there is no better way to take advantage of your 4K TV. You also want to make sure the apps you are interested in, whether they are free or premium, are available. Connection options can be important, particularly when it comes to the internet, if wi-fi isn’t stable enough, many Android TV boxes come with gigabit ethernet ports to provide a more stable connection. And, the box has to be easy to use, Android TV has a straight-forward OS that is very navigable. Taking all these factors into consideration, you will be prepared to find the Android TV box that works for you.
Consideration has to be given to smart TVs and the differences between them and Android TV boxes. First and foremost, smart TVs are more expensive than Android TV boxes. An Android TV box makes it easy and cost-effective to turn a regular TV into a smart TV. In addition, the number of apps on a smart TV will be limited in comparison to those available via Android TV. And with regard to the OS, a smart TV system is far more likely to become obsolete as some updates are less frequent compared to an Android TV box. There are other differences, but your personal preferences will turn you one way or the other.
So, now that you’re ready to make the leap to streaming bliss with an Android TV box, we’re here to help you make the decision with this listing of the best Android TV boxes. Time to get your binge on!
Q: What is the difference between Android TV and Smart TV?
Nowadays smart TV — also known as Internet TV — revolves around providing some extra bit of entertainment using internet capabilities. Having a smart TV is like having a mini-computer built into your TV itself. However, most smart TVs are not upgradable in terms of Operating System, it pretty much remains the same as what it came with preinstalled, so it doesn’t offer any methods to install new applications.
An Android TV, on the other hand, can be thought of like having a smartphone with a massive screen. This also gives an advantage: with Android TV you get access to the world’s biggest app market, the Google Play Store, from where you can install numerous applications onto your TV.
Another pro with Android TV is that it usually comes with a microphone, thus giving a seamless, hands-free experience.
Q: How can you select the best Android TV box for your needs?
First things first, purchasing an Android TV meaning purchasing a big-screen smartphone, and the most important part of it is the processor and RAM. Go for at least a 1.5Ghz quad-core CPU 4GB RAM for a seamless experience. For input compatibility check for at least 2 HDMI ports and high refresh rates. Another important aspect is that you need to select the OS with at least Android 5.0 (Lollipop).
Q: What Does Jailbroken Mean on a TV box?
If you see a message on your Android TV stating that your device is Jailbroken it means that your device is rooted, in other words, a bug has been installed that allows the user to bypass internal protections. This is a risky process because while it provides you extended access into the Operating system, where you can modify the bloatware, and even uninstall annoying preinstalled applications, you also lose the warranty provided by the company. Now if anything happens with the device, they are no longer responsible for it.
Q: What is better: Firestick or Android Box?
Android TV box and Amazon Firestick are both genetically similar as well as analogous in behavior. But they both have varied functionality. The Amazon Firestick is a much better alternative when your primary concern is to access mainly the Amazon ecosystem and its accompanying devices. Whereas when it comes to ease of use and profitability, Android Box is an ideal technology match, with Android Box you can not only connect to the Internet and boost your entertainment options but also download multiple utility applications from the Google Play store and make your TV your own personal entertainment center.
Q: How Do I Connect a Phone to an Android Box?
Your entertainment is increased more if you can pair up your smartphone with your Android TV. You can connect your phone to your Android TV box wirelessly using technology such as DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). This may allow you to stream your videos, photos, and music to your Android TV box using your home network’s wireless connection.
With this technology, you can not only cast your phone, or use it as a TV remote but also increase the interoperability of your TV and smartphone.
