Apple iPhone 7

iPhone 7: How Big Will It Be For Apple Inc.?
There’s no denying that the iPhone 6s cycle has been a weak one for Apple, but ultra-bulls expect the iPhone 7 to shift things back around, even though we’ve been hearing reports that it won’t be the huge upgrade consumers have come to expect from the non-S models. Even Verizon this week said that the slowness of the iPhone 6s cycle caused a much lower upgrade rate than it usually sees. The iPhone 7 has truly become a scapegoat for all of the wireless industry’s problems, even though it hasn’t been unveiled yet.
But what if the next iPhone isn’t as great for Apple as most expect?

Surveys suggest consumers awaiting the iPhone 7
Earlier this week, Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley said his survey indicates that consumers are putting off upgrading their iPhones right now in anticipation of the iPhone 7, and this survey isn’t the only one with this finding. He expects iPhone sales in the U.S. to dive below the 50% mark of total smartphone sales in the June quarter, which would mark the first time this has happened since Apple unveiled the bigger iPhone 6 and its even bigger counterpart, the iPhone 6 Plus.
Walkley predicts that the company’s smartphone sales will recover with the iPhone 7.
Possible upside to average selling price
Credit Suisse analyst Kulbinder Garcha and team also expects this year’s iPhone models to turn things back around for Apple, and they expect a return to unit growth in 2017. The CS team also sees two mix shifts as positively benefiting the average selling price. One is new memory options as the iPhone 7 is expected to come in 32 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB models, compared to the current 16 GB, 64GB and 128GB models that are available in the iPhone 6s.
The other is an “upgrade within the upgrade cycle,” which basically just means that iPhone 6 users may upgrade to an iPhone 7 Plus. The CS team believes the product mix for the iPhone 6s cycle was tilted slightly toward the smaller iPhone 6s rather than the 6s Plus model.
Will the iPhone 7 fix Apple’s unit problem?
There have been many studies done which indicate that iPhone replacement cycles have elongated to two or two-and-a-half years, and since the iPhone 6 cycle two years ago was so big, it stands to reason that the iPhone 7 cycle will be huge as well. However, reports that this year’s model won’t have any significant upgrades from the 6s are concerning some analysts.
Profit Confidential reports that Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo believes Apple will need a “dynamic change” in the iPhone 7 in order to convince consumers to upgrade. He made the comments at the MoffettNathanson investor conference this week when he also said that smartphone upgrades are especially slow right now as consumers wait to see what the iPhone 7 will offer.
Of course there are other factors when trying to determine whether even a very slight update will convince iPhone users to upgrade. Not only are many consumers on two-year cycles with their mobile carriers, many carriers are pushing monthly installment plans for phones. Consumers who began a plan two years ago and will be eligible to upgrade may do so simply because they’ve paid off their old phone and can get a new phone without raising their bill. On the other hand, they might wait if the iPhone 7 isn’t enough of an upgrade because at the very least, their monthly bill will decline because they’ve paid off the phone.

New renders show the iPhone 8 will probably be bigger than the iPhone 7
It’s looking more like the iPhone 8 will be bigger in size than the iPhone 7, but smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus.
That’s according to fresh renders from persistent Apple leaker Benjamin Geskin.
Geskin created some mock-up designs of the iPhone 8, based on leaked dimensions for the new iPhone. He claims to have factory worker sources with knowledge of Apple’s designs.
His designs compare the iPhone 7, iPhone 8, and iPhone 7 Plus side by side. He originally created them for iDrop News, and has shared his designs with Business Insider.
Here are the three phones compared, with the iPhone 8 in the middle:
A few things stand out here. You can see the iPhone 8 looks slightly bigger than the iPhone 7 in every respect — it’s taller, wider, and thicker. According to iDrop News, the iPhone 8’s dimensions are 143.59 x 70.94 x 7.57 mm versus the iPhone 7 at 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm. The iPhone 7 Plus comes in at158.2 x 77.9 x 7.3 mm.
Geskin’s renders tie in with lots of other rumours, but none of it’s confirmed. Case makers have been mocking up iPhone 8 models and covers based on leaked CAD designs, most of which point to a slightly bigger phone.
There are a few other previously rumoured features you can see on Geskin’s designs.
- There’s no home button on the iPhone 8
- The screen almost fills the entire front of the device
- It comes with a vertical dual-lens camera

Will iPhone 7 Cases Fit the iPhone 7s?
Toggle Dark Mode
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus devices might be a bit larger than their predecessors, which could complicate matters for case manufacturers, according to a new supply chain report.
That extra size entails a few extra millimeters in each dimension when compared to the current-generation iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, according to supply chain sources cited by TechnoBuffalo. Other than the minute size differences, the two incremental “s” devices are largely expected to retain the same relative form factor as the current models — though with a new glass sandwich design. You can compare the dimensions below.
iPhone 7 vs iPhone 7s Size Comparison
Model | Height | Width | Depth |
iPhone 7 | 138.3 mm | 67.1 mm | 7.1 mm |
iPhone 7s | 138.44 mm | 67.26 mm | 7.21 mm |
iPhone 7 Plus | 158.2 mm | 77.9 mm | 7.3 mm |
iPhone 7s Plus | 158.37 mm | 78.1 mm | 7.41 mm |
* Measured in millimeters.
Will iPhone 7 Cases fit the iPhone 7s?
Of course, the differences will hardly be noticeable to the average consumer. A 0.1-millimeter increase in depth, for example, is about the same size as the thickness of a sheet of printer paper. The size differences could cause problems for tightly fitting cases manufactured for the iPhone 7 lineup’s dimensions, however. While many current-generation cases will work with the new devices, it all comes down to how precisely the accessories are machined and how tightly they fit. Looser cases should fit fine, however they may block the iPhone 7s’ wireless charging capabilities.
Why Will the iPhone 7s Be Bigger Than the iPhone 7?
The reason behind the small size differences is currently unclear, but it’s likely because of extra features and functionality packed into the iPhone 7s lineup. Apple’s two incremental “s” devices are rumored to sport a new glass back panel to facilitate its other key feature: inductive wireless charging capabilities. It’s curious because Apple is usually committed to keeping its devices as minimal and thin as possible. But, with all technology, there’s always a trade off between form and function. Wireless charging, for example, presumably needs a bit extra space in addition to the glass back.
While it’s impossible to independently verify the authenticity of the report’s sources, TechnoBuffalo’s iPhone 7s dimensions do line up exactly with a previous leak earlier this month. That report also suggested that the iPhone 7s will be slightly larger, although with a reduced camera bump. At the time, dimensions for the iPhone 7s Plus were not available.
Apple is slated to unveil its iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus devices next month, with current rumors pointing toward a Sept. 12 launch date. Judging by historical patterns, that could mean that at least some of the new devices will begin shipping to consumers on Friday, Sept. 22. In addition to the iPhone 7s incremental updates, Apple is largely expected to announce its premium iPhone 8 flagship with a revolutionary new design and features, as well as a new LTE-equipped Apple Watch and 4K Apple TV.

All the reasons Apple’s ‘boring’ new iPhone 7 will be its most exciting iPhone ever
In my in-depth iPhone 6s review last year, I explained why the “S” update for Apple’s popular iPhone 6 was actually the company’s biggest iPhone upgrade ever. People seem to be under the impression that just because a new phone looks like its predecessor, it’s not a major update. That notion really couldn’t be any more misguided — judging a book by its cover is never a good idea, especially when it comes to consumer electronics.
Apple’s iPhone 6s was a massive upgrade compared to the iPhone 6. And explosions aside, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 is perhaps the most impressive Android upgrade ever even though it looks a great deal like the Galaxy S7 edge and Galaxy S6 edge+. But the iPhone 7, despite its striking resemblance to its predecessors, is shaping up to be an even bigger upgrade than either of those industry-leading smartphones.
Look, nobody is suggesting that Apple’s upcoming new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are marvels of modern design. They look… like iPhones. If it wasn’t for the new cameras on the back and the modified antenna design, no one would be able to tell an iPhone 6 or 6s from an iPhone 7. But since when does the story end there?
I’ve penned a couple of posts over the past few months that have challenged the notion that Apple’s upcoming new iPhones are going to be “boring.” Now that we’re just one day away from Apple’s big launch event though, let’s revisit these boring new iPhones one last time before they’re made official.
Okay… let’s run down the list:
First up, Apple’s new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are going to be the most powerful iPhones ever. By a big margin. They’ll also be the fastest smartphones money can buy come launch day, especially in real-world scenarios where iPhones always trounce rival Android flagships.
Speaking of ways that Apple’s new iPhone 7 models will improve upon their predecessors, they’re going to directly address two of the three biggest problems people have with iPhones. First, Apple is going to double the storage capacity on each model. So instead of 16GB, 64GB and 128GB iPhones, you’ll get 32GB, 128GB and 256GB storage options. That’s a huge deal.
Beyond that, Apple’s new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will feature IP-rated water resistance. That means a quick accidental dunk will no longer fry your iPhone instantly.
A few changes will be made in order to assist with Apple’s waterproofing, and yes, the removal of the standard headphone jack will be among them. Don’t worry, there will be an adapter that ships in the box with the new iPhones, and we’ll probably see whining dissipate a few weeks after the iPhone 7 launches.
Another change we can attribute in part to waterproofing is a completely redesigned home button. Apple’s home button on the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus won’t be a button you click, but will instead be a capacitive button with 3D Touch support and haptic feedback that simulates the sensation of a button press. It’s a nifty change that could support some new software features, and it paves the way for next year’s big iPhone refresh that will completely eliminate the home button.
All that is just the beginning. We’re also looking at two new cameras, with an improved single-lens shooter on the iPhone 7 that will add OIS, and a dual-lens camera on the iPhone 7 Plus that should offer some terrific new features. Both phones will reportedly sport new True Tone displays like the iPad Pro, and we’re looking at not one but two brand new color options to help spice things up.
And those are just the things we know about. It’s entirely possible — likely, even — that Apple managed to keep a few things secret ahead of its big Apple event and we won’t learn about them until after the show kicks off on Wednesday.
Once the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus make their way into consumers’ hands following their expected launch on September 16th, you’ll think back to this article and chuckle. The reviews will start rolling in, the performance tests will trickle out, the comparisons will wash over the web, and we’ll wonder how anyone ever thought the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus would be anything but massive upgrades.
