Find out what to do if your battery won’t charge or charges slowly, or if you see an alert message.
Plug into a power source
To charge your device, follow these steps:
- Connect your device to the USB cable that came with it.
- Plug into one of these three power sources:
Wall power socket
Plug your USB charging cable into a USB power adapter, then plug the adapter into the wall.
Computer
Plug your charging cable into a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port on a computer that’s on and not in sleep mode. Don’t use the USB ports on your keyboard.
Power accessory
Plug your cable into a powered USB hub, docking station or other Apple-certified accessory.
If you’re trying to charge wirelessly with an iPhone 8 or later, first make sure you can charge with the USB adapter and cable that came with your device. If that works, then get help with wireless charging. For a third-party accessory, check that it’s Apple certified.
As your device charges, you’ll see a lightning bolt beside the battery icon in the status bar, or a large battery icon on your Lock screen.

If your device charges slowly or won’t charge
Follow these steps and try again after each step:
- Check your charging cable and USB adapter for signs of damage, like breakage or bent prongs. Don’t use damaged accessories.
- Use a wall power socket and check for firm connections between your charging cable, USB wall adapter, and wall socket or AC power cable, or try a different socket.
- Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device, then plug your charging cable firmly into your device. If the charging port is damaged, your device probably needs service.
- Let your device charge for half an hour.
- If your device is still unresponsive, force-restart your device:
- iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE (2nd generation): press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
- iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and iPod touch (7th generation): press and hold both the Side (or Top) button and the Volume Down button until you see the Apple logo.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, iPhone SE (1st generation) and iPod touch (6th generation) or earlier: press and hold both the Side (or Top) button and the Home button until you see the Apple logo.
- Let your device charge for another half an hour.
- If your device still won’t power on or charge, take your device, charging cable and charging adapter to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider for evaluation. You can also contact Apple Support.
If your device stopped charging at 80 per cent
Your iPhone may get slightly warmer while it charges. To extend the lifespan of your battery, if the battery gets too warm, software may limit charging above 80 per cent. Your iPhone will charge again when the temperature drops. Try moving your iPhone and charger to a cooler location.
iOS 13 and later uses Optimised Battery Charging to slow the rate of battery ageing by reducing the time that your iPhone spends fully charged. Your iPhone uses on-device machine learning to understand your daily charging routine so it can wait until you need to use your iPhone to finish charging past 80 per cent.* Optimised Battery Charging is only active when your iPhone predicts that it will be connected to a charger for a long period of time.
* Information regarding your charging routine is only stored on your iPhone. The information isn’t included in backups and isn’t shared with Apple.
If an alert says that your accessory isn’t supported or isn’t certified
These alerts can appear for a few reasons: Your iOS device may have a dirty or damaged charging port, your charging accessory is defective, damaged, or non Apple-certified, or your USB charger isn’t designed to charge devices. Follow these steps:
- Remove any debris from the charging port on the bottom of your device.
- Restart your device:
- iPhone
- iPod touch
- Try a different USB cable or charger.
- Make sure you have the latest version of iOS.
- Contact Apple Support to set up service.

Fast charge your iPhone
Use fast charge with certain iPhone models. You can recharge your iPhone up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes.

Fast charging works when you use an Apple USB-C to Lightning cable and one of these adapters:
- Apple 18W, 20W, 2 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, or 96W USB-C Power Adapter
- A comparable third-party USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD)
If you’re not sure which Apple Power Adapter you have, check the wattage on the top or bottom of the adapter:

Question: Q: iPhone connects and disconnects from Mac
When I plug in my iPhone to my Macbook pro, it repetitively connects and disconnects. Therefore I cannot charge my phone through my computer anymore.
I own this iPhone since decembre 2018, and this issue only appeared this week. However when I plug in my iPhone to a wall outlet, it charges perfectly. I also noticed that there is a lag time before my phone starts charging when connected to my Macbook (before disconnecting right away, and then reconnecting etc).
I tried to connect my iPhone to both USB ports of my Macbook, with many different Apple lightning cables and also my Anker cable (MFI certified), but the issue substains. I plugged in my mother’s iPhone 6 to my Macbook and it charged perfectly. I plugged in my iPhone to my brother’s former Macbook pro (15″ from 2008) and my iPhone could charge normally.
Here everything I tried to resolve this issue (which failed by the way) :
— I shut down and turned on my computer and my phone.
— I also restored my phone.
Could anyone tell me a solution?
I specify that I have a 256Go iPhone X under IOS 11.2.5 and a 13″ retina Macbook pro (mid 2014) under High Sierra 10.13.3.

I had same issue on my iphone 6, ios 9.3.2. After searching through the web i found following solution that helped me:
You need to reset your privacy and location info and then trust your iphone with itunes again.
1. Disconnect your iphone from cable.
2. On your iphone: ->Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Location & Privacy (accept all things).
3. Connect your iphone back to cable. (iphone will reconnecting again, don’t worry, it will be soon over).
4. iTunes will ask about trust, accept all this.
After that your iphone should stop reconnecting repeatedly and start to charging normally.

But I do think I solved my problem, by something similar.
On the hunch that the computer was trying to set up a network connection via the phone while the phone was trying to do something else, I went into the network settings and found that in the list of services I had an entry for «Thunderbolt Bridge.» I thought it was off, because it was listed as Inactive and the configuration I could see said «Configure IPv4: Off». But to make sure it was really completely disabled I pushed the «Advanced» button to change the configuration details (after clicking the lock icon and authenticating, of course). I changed «Configure IPv6» from «Automatically» to «Manually» and saved that.
After that, connecting my phone to the laptop finally worked. I was just now able to get some pictures off my phone onto the laptop.

I think I found a solution after much research.
On the mac, go to settings>Network> iphone USB> then uncheck the box that says «Disable unless needed»
This worked for my iphone 7

I have an iPhone X and MacBook Air. I have done everything and nothing fixed it. Tried this and seems right. I hope Apple figure it out and fix it in new updates, however, I’ve seen that people have had this problem from 2013.
I just wanted everyone to have the solution here that way when others experience it, they can hopefully find this solution quickly. Luckily several of you like ( MrArifFikri ) touched on the solution already, I’ll just specify the reason for clarity.
It comes down to power, or more importantly «current». Specifically, with an iPad, USB power consumption is very finicky. So in order for the USB direct connection to your PC, USB hub, or laptop you need to make sure your iPad is charged to over 51% . This will reduce the power draw the iPad will attempt to pull from the USB connection. This should give you flawless charging and syncing capabilities. Now you can sidestep this in some cases by using USB ports on your hub, PC or laptop that are closer to the power supply, or series on the circuit board.
If your iPad is below 51%, you need to use the «cube» or power block that came with your iPad. (The smaller one for your iPhone is not recommended as it lacks the internal transformer that the iPad power block has) The reason for this is that your iPad is attempting to draw too much current from the USB connection through a substrate, i.e. the PC, USB hub or laptop connection. They are only designed to allow a limited amount of current through those connections, thus your iPad continues to «trip» the charging circuit in the device because the power draw is too low.

My iPhone Won’t Charge! Here’s The Real Fix.
When an iPhone won’t charge, it’s a big deal. I’m a former Apple employee, and during my time in the Apple Store, fixing iPhone charging problems was a big part of my daily work. The good news is that the majority of iPhone charging problems can be fixed at home. In this article, I’ll show you how to fix an iPhone that won’t charge, step-by-step.

Know This Before You Begin
One of the most common questions Apple techs receive when an iPhone won’t charge is this: “If my iPhone won’t charge, do I need a new battery?”
In spite of what you’ll read on many websites, the answer to this question is no! There’s a lot of misinformation out there, and that was one of the main reasons I wanted to write this article.
As a former Apple tech with experience working with hundreds of iPhones that wouldn’t charge, I can tell you that replacing a battery is the absolute wrong thing to do.
The truth is that most of the time, it’s your iPhone’s software — not hardware — that’s preventing your iPhone from charging. If your iPhone won’t charge, 99% of the time, replacing the battery will have zero effect!
And, if there is a hardware problem, it’s much more likely that the issue is with the charging port itself — but we’re not there yet.
Wireless Charging: A Temporary Fix
While you work on fixing your iPhone, you may still be able to charge it wirelessly. Every iPhone since the iPhone 8 supports wireless charging with Qi-certified chargers. Place your iPhone on the center of a Qi wireless charger and see if starts charging.
If it does — that’s great! However, we still need to address the problem preventing your iPhone from charging with a wired connection.

How To Fix An iPhone That Won’t Charge
1. Hard Reset Your iPhone
Sometimes the solution is as simple as hard resetting your iPhone. That’s the first thing an Apple tech would do in the Apple Store, and it’s easy to do at home. Here’s how:

Apple tech tip: The #1 mistake people make while trying to hard reset their iPhone is that they don’t hold the buttons down for long enough. On iPhone 8 or newer, however, make sure you are pressing the first two buttons very quickly and holding the power button down for a long time. Sometimes the process can take 20 seconds or more!
If that doesn’t work, don’t worry! We’ll dive into the hardware fixes in the next step.
2. Check Your Lightning Cable For Damage
Take a very close look at both ends of the USB cable you use to charge your iPhone. Apple’s lightning cables are prone to fraying, especially at the end that connects to your iPhone. If you see visible signs of wear, it might be time for a new cable.
How can I tell whether my lightning cable is the reason why my iPhone won’t charge?
If there is no visible damage to the outside of the cable, try plugging your iPhone into a USB port on your computer to charge instead of using the wall adapter that came with your iPhone. If you already charge your iPhone using your computer, try using the wall adapter. If it works in one place and not the other, your cable isn’t the issue.
This might seem obvious, but sometimes the best way to determine whether you have a “bad cable” is to try charging your iPhone using a friend’s cable. If your iPhone suddenly springs back to life after you plug it in, you’ve identified the reason why your iPhone won’t charge — a faulty cable.
Don’t forget about your iPhone’s warranty!
If your iPhone is still under warranty, the USB cable (and everything else in the iPhone box) is covered! Apple will replace your lightning cable for free, as long as it’s in decent shape.
You can set up a return on Apple’s support website or call your local Apple Store to make an appointment with the Genius Bar. If you decide to go to the Apple Store, it’s always a good idea to have an appointment at the Genius Bar before you go in. That way, you won’t have to wait in line — at least not for long.
3rd-party cables can charge iPhone charging problems
One of the most common reasons why an iPhone won’t charge comes from low-quality 3rd-party iPhone charger cables that people buy in gas stations. Yes, Apple cables are expensive, but in my experience, those $5 knockoffs never hold up like the real thing. There are good ones out there — you just have to know which ones to choose.
High quality, less-expensive cables do exist!
If you’re looking for a high-quality replacement iPhone charging cable that’s more durable than Apple’s, check out our favorites on Amazon. These aren’t cheap gas station cables that are going to break in a week. I love the 6-foot Lightning cable because it’s long enough for me to be able to use my iPhone in bed.
3. Try A Different iPhone Charger
Do you charge your iPhone by plugging it into the wall, using a car charger, in a speaker dock, in your laptop, or some other way? There are a lot of different ways to charge an iPhone.
Remember that it’s your iPhone software that says ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ to charging when your iPhone connects to an accessory. If the software detects power fluctuations, it will prevent your iPhone from charging as a protective measure.
How can I tell whether my charger is the reason why my iPhone won’t charge?
We’ll do the same thing we did when we inspected your Lightning cable. The simplest way to find out whether your charger is bad is to try another one. Make sure you try more than one because chargers can be very finicky.
If your iPhone won’t charge with the wall adapter, try plugging it into a USB port on your computer. If it won’t charge in the computer, try plugging it into the wall — or try a different USB port on the computer. If your iPhone charges with one adapter and not the other, then your charger is the problem.
There are high-quality fast chargers out there, but you have to be careful
If you need a new charger, check out the chargers we recommend using the same link as above (for the cable). The maximum Apple-approved amperage for iPhone chargers is 2.1 amps. Unlike many third-party chargers that can damage your iPhone, these ones will charge your iPhone quickly and safely.
(The iPad charger is 2.1A and Apple says it’s OK for iPhones.)
Hint: If you’re trying to charge using an Apple keyboard or USB hub, try plugging your iPhone directly into one of your computer’s USB ports. All the devices plugged into USB hubs (and keyboards) share a limited supply of power. I have personally seen iPhone charging problems occur because there wasn’t enough power to go around.
4. Brush The Gunk Out Of Your iPhone’s Charging Port
Use a flashlight and take a close look at the charging port in the bottom of your iPhone. If you see any debris or gunk in there, it might be preventing the lightning cable from making a solid connection to your iPhone. There are lots of connectors down there (the lightning cable has 9), and if the wrong one is blocked off, your iPhone won’t charge at all.
If you find lint, gunk, or other debris in the charging port of your iPhone, it’s time to brush it out. You need something that won’t conduct an electric charge or damage the electronics in the bottom of your iPhone. Here’s the trick:
Grab a toothbrush (one you’ve never used before) and gently brush out your iPhone’s charging port. When I was at Apple, we used fancy anti-static brushes to do this (which you can get on Amazon for next to nothing), but toothbrushes work just as well.
Dealing with liquid damage
One of the most common reasons why an iPhone won’t charge is liquid damage. Liquid damage can short out the connections in the charging port of your iPhone cause all sorts of problems with your iPhone. Even if you’ve dried out the port and brushed out the gunk, sometimes the damage has already been done.
5. Put Your iPhone Into DFU Mode And Restore
Even if your iPhone won’t charge, a DFU restore may still work! You’ve eliminated the possibility of a simple software problem and taken a look at your USB cable, charger, and the iPhone itself, so it’s time for a last-ditch effort — the DFU restore. A DFU restore is a special kind of restore (when you restore your iPhone, you erase everything on it and restore it to factory settings) that can solve severe software issues — if they exist.

When I worked for Apple, this is the first thing I’d try, even when the phone appeared to be damaged. There’s a small chance that a DFU restore will bring a non-functional iPhone back to life.

6. Repair Your iPhone
If you go to an Apple Store to repair your iPhone and there has been liquid or physical damage to phone, the only option they can offer is to replace your entire iPhone. If you don’t have AppleCare+, this can get expensive, fast.
If you had pictures, videos, or other personal information on your iPhone and your iPhone won’t charge, Apple will say they’re gone forever. Get in touch with an Apple representative and see what they can do. If all they can do is replace your iPhone, you may want to consider visiting a local mom and pop repair shop.
