iPhone is busy: Making Apple Watch ready for development

Since I upgraded to iOS 15, watchOS 8 and Xcode 13, after I turned off and on my Mac, every first time I want to launch an app from Xcode to my iPhone appear this message (even if I’m not developing for watchOS):

The Mac stays stuck on it for at least 20 minutes.

The only solution I found (until now) is to switch off WiFi on my Watch.

Is there a better solution?

Did you try to reboot the watch ?

If that’s not enough, try to unpair the watch from iPhone and pair it again.

Toggling Aeroplane mode also works

Having the same issue on Xcode 13.0, iOS 14.7.1 and WatchOS 7.1, also in trying to debug an iOS app (i.e. I’m not developing for WatchOS). I’ve restarted the computer, watch and phone, and unpaired / re-paired the phone from Xcode’s devices, but can’t get it to work consistently (I get stuck on «Making Apple Watch ready for development» maybe every other or every third time I try to launch the app).

Turning the watch off entirely does the trick (as I imagine airplane mode would too), but I’d like for my watch to work as well 😕

Facing this issue since Xcode 13 betas. Disabling Bluetooth in the iPhone temporarily fixes the issue for me.

With the Control Center Bluetooth icon in grey, no need to fully disable it in the Settings app.

I had the same problem, but iOS 15.0.2 / watchOS 8.0.1 no longer causes the problem.

I still have this issue in iOS 15.2 and watchOS 8.2. The issue was never gone.

This issue is driving me nuts. And for me it happens literally every time I plug in my iPhone. Unplug, plug it back in, wait 5 minutes for Xcode to make the watch ready for development. Which then usually (but not always) fails by the way! Plug it back in, and you’re just stuck waiting for 5 minutes yet again.

When it fails, I get this error:

Unable to prepare iPhone for development Could not locate the device support files.

But building an app to my iPhone still works 🤷‍♂️

This error occurred when I used the Iphone for debugging.I’ve tried restarting the Iphone and mac,but it hasn’t worked.

I had to click the small yellow hammer on the top bar on xcode and set it to the new build setting (rather than legacy build)

What worked for me was these steps:

  1. Unplug device cable
  2. Restart Xcode
  3. Plug device back in with cable
  4. Run app while still having this issue

At this point I just waited a few seconds and then the error went away, before also completing the build and running the app successfully on the device.

Finished Running on iPhone

I am trying to test my app on an iPhone 4S. When I build and run from Xcode, the project is successfully compiled but after that Xcode says:

Finished running MyApp.app on MyiPhone

The app perfectly work on the simulator and the provisioning profile works correctly (I tried to load an empty app and it works).

If I try to manually load the app I get this message:

The Info.plist for application at /Users/*/Documents/App/AppName/DerivedData/AppName/Build/Products/Release-iphoneos/AppName.app specifies a CFBundleExecutable of AppName, which does not exist.

Where is the problem?

The connection that XCode creates with the device is rather fragile, and can easily be corrupted if anything goes amiss in the debugging test, most commonly if the developer stops a build, while it is being moved to the device.

I have a routine of things I go through, when this occurs. If one doesn’t work, I go further down the list.

Check your signing certificates : This error can occur if you mess around with the certificates too much. Make sure your current scheme uses the Debug signing when making a debug build, and check in your application settings if the current debug signing certificate is a debug certificate. (Not AppStore, AdHoc or Enterprise).

Reestablish connection with the device : Look under devices in your Organizer. Check if the device you are using is present and marked with a green bullet. If orange or grey, reconnect the device with the USB. For precaution, wait a couple of seconds from taking the cable out before you insert it. It should make no difference if you eject the cable from your mac, or the part connecting your iDevice.

Reactivate development on the iDevice : Being unaware why this happends, some devices revert to a non-development stage from time to time. Clicking the «Enable development» under Organizer > Devices seems to clear this off.

Flushing XCode device connections : Something that often is needed, you can simply shut down XCode (and to be safe, close the iPhone simulator as well) and start it up anew. Deleting the debug application present on the iDevice is also a good idea.

Restart your iDevice : Tedious as it might seem, restarting your iDevice is sometimes needed, since the pipe held on the device might be corrupted.

Restarting your developer machine : If everything else fails, a restart of your mac is often required. I have never experienced this error without having it fixed by now.

I just updated to XCode 11.2.1 and am trying to deploy my app to my iPhone 7 Plus from my Mac Book Pro running Catalina (10.15.1). Unfortunately, XCode is hanging on “Preparing debugger support for. “it has been over 20 minutes. I’ve searched the forums and tried the varied suggestions (“untrust” and “retrust” the pc from your phone, restart XCode, restart the phone, restart the pc, etc.), but nothing works.

This app deployed fine to the present device numerous times under XCode 11.2.

My Xcode freezes regularly in some process of “Copying cache files from the device,” and it blocks launching the repose on this device with the message “is busy: Copying cache files from the device.” It lasts forever and repeats unpredictably with different devices (iPad and iPhone with different iOS versions).

It appeared both with XCode 11 and now with XCode 12, with iOS 12, 13, and 14 devices. Both with a wired and wireless connection.

I wasn’t ready to find anything about this issue. Anyone else faced this? Any ideas of what quiet files are copied and the way to urge obviate that?

Fixing Xcode 9 issue: «iPhone is busy: Preparing debugger support for iPhone»

I’m looking for more information on the message below. Xcode 9 seems to be hanging for a couple minutes already.

How can I tell Xcode 9 to quickly recognize my previously used device updated to iOS 11?

There are multiple solutions for this:

Solution 1: Patiently wait for 10 to 15 minutes. Have a tea or roam around 😉

Solution 2: Disconnect device from the system. Restart both iPhone and Xcode and then rebuild again.

Solution 3:

Go to Windows → Devices and Simulators (Shortcut key: cmd+shift+2)

You’ll see iPhone device connected to system with message

Click on plus button (+) present in bottom-left corner.

This will show the device connected to system. Click on Next button.

Thereafter you’ll see ‘device setup was successful’. Click on Done button.

Solution 3 worked for me!

Solution 4:

Unpair your device and then pair it again. Thereafter follow Step 3.

I clicked ‘Cancel Running’, opened the Devices list, unpaired my iPhone, removed my USB cable and reconnected it, paired the iPhone, and then was asked on my iPhone to enter my passcode («pin code»). Did this and then was finally able to pair my phone correctly.

Wait a few minutes. The application will start automatically

Restarting Xcode worked for me (quit and start again).

What didn’t work for me:

  • waiting for an hour on one device
  • waiting for an hour on another device
  • restarting devices
  • unpairing/pairing devices

It turns out XCode opens device manager window beneath it and waits for you to hit the next button. Switch to that window, hit next and you get the progress bar for the process to show up.

In my case, iTunes was open, so

2 — access you phone

3 — click to disconnect your phone

Now the device is ready on XCode

below solution worked for me, follow steps to resolve your issue:

Step 1: Cancel Running

Step 2 : open Window menu and select Devices and Simulators

Step 3 : Unpair the iPhone

Step 4 : Removed iPhone USB cable and reconnect to the system

Step 5 : Pair the iPhone when you connect then you will be asked to Trust or Don’t Allow, Please click Truct on your iPhone and enter your passcode (Pin Code)

Note : I performed all the above steps they worked for me. The issue of my device debugger gone.

I unplugged my cable and saw this. After it reached the end I was able to run it no problems.

You don’t have to unplug to see this; just hit cancel and you will see its progress.

  1. Click on Window menu
  2. Select Device and Simulators
  3. Select your device
  4. Click on + button at bottom left corner
  5. Click Next
  6. Click Done

I found deleting the app from the device and re-installing with Xcode solved this issue.

I realised I had less than 100 MBs of free space on my disc. Freeing up disk space solved the issue for me!

  • Open Window -> Devices and Simulators
  • Unpair iPhone on the side list
  • Unplug and plug again the USB cable
  • Press Trust in the prompt message in the device!
  • Then it should work! It worked for me

I have been using my iPhone X to debug via Network and suddenly had this problem.

Disable «Connect via network» and try again with USB. This trick worked for me.

When you plug a New device which is having iOS 11, Xcode 9 will Prepare Debugger Support for that device, At this time you should Wait to complete it.

Then run the project in that device it will run smoothly.

If you didn’t keep patience while creating Debugger Support then it will throw the error mentioned in the question.

The Best way:

  1. Disconnect the Iphone.
  2. Clean xcode by command+ shift + k or by going to Product -> Clean

rebooted iPhone, closed all other open applications and unlocked phone worked

I had the same problem many times, these things worked for me:

  • restarting my phone + xCode.
  • checking that both your Mac and your iPhone are connected to the same Network.( has a high potential ).
  • repairing my phone.

Tried all the «speedrun» tips up till 2019-11-24 without luck. The wait seemed inevitable but incredibly long in my case:

with a freshly upgraded iOS version.

I then found this comment on reddit which makes the most sense:

This is required when you connect a device with an iOS version that the respective computer’s Xcode didn’t see before. It saves them in /Users/username/Library/Developer/Xcode/iOS DeviceSupport and it does take a while. Don’t restart Xcode as it will not help you, just wait for it to finish.

It takes quite some time because these debugger support files occupy a lot of space (29 GB for me), though you can safely delete any version from there, and if you connect a device with that version again, it will re-save it from scratch.

So if you just upgraded your iOS, then the «from scratch» part could take longer than usual, also depending on your network condition. In my case, it is definitely much much longer than the «10-15min» other people claimed. I measure it by hours.

A lot of tricks seem to have worked but they neglect the fact that time goes on as you try things while Xcode keeps working on the setup in the background, and quite possibly resumes its job whenever you do a restart/reboot cycle.

This led me to noticing that my Xcode version is just one step behind the iOS point release. After upgrading my Xcode, it worked.

But it took longer because I removed the iOS DeviceSupport folder by following a tip!

So here are my suggestions:

  • Check your Xcode version down to the minor version to make sure it should actually support the iOS version.
  • Check your Mac’s free disk space to make room for newly generated device support content under

/Library/Developer/Xcode/iOS DeviceSupport as this tip suggested.

  • Check if you have connected your device to a fast-enough USB port, as this tip suggests.
  • Wait till Xcode finishes «preparing for debugging».
  • If it doesn’t finish in a few seconds or minutes, keep waiting.
  • DO NOT remove any folder as some tips may suggest. Removal would simply make you wait longer!
